Hereford disappointed after hearing misogynistic chants in game against Cambridge City

Hereford say they have been left disappointed after hearing misogynistic chants in the game against Cambridge City on Saturday.

It comes following the revelation the day before the FA Cup clash that the club were £5,000 of going bust and potentially ceasing to exist only a number of months ago. And with that in mind, any extra punishment for the club can prove costly., especially down at this level of football.

Bull News wrote in their blog about the incident, saying: “Cambridge’s Battersby went down injured. Sports Therapist Tia McCrindle came on to treat him. Twenty to thirty people on the Len Weston side of the Meadow End who had paid to come in started shouting together that they wanted the Therapist to take off her clothes in the middle of the pitch for their enjoyment. It must have not been heard by the club officials but it is unprofessional that none of the stewards alerted the club to the abuse.

“The club proclaims much about Respect but an opportunity to demonstrate this was not taken. It is great to have Hereford Women playing at Edgar Street on a Sunday but mothers, sisters and daughters need to be regarded on a Saturday. Darlington and Scarborough were both fined £1,500 for similar misogynistic chanting in July. That’s the cost of a loan player for a month or maybe more. The club is desperate to hang on to chances of promotion and is in a financial crisis with six figure losses each year which are being desperately staunched. It is depressing that a few of those present wanted to hurt the club financially through their bigotry.

“Paul Caddis should be able to bring his daughters on to the pitch at Hereford without having to worry about what a few may shout at them. The club should investigate why no action was taken to address this serious breach of their club policy.”

The match itself saw Hereford open the scoring on 15 minutes when Alex Babos netted with a curling free kick, two minute later, Ethan Freemantle attempted to get one for himself, but his attempt went off target.

A moment of hands on heads around the half hour mark as Freemantle saw his deflected shot go over goalkeeper Joe Welch before coming back off the bar.

On 36 minutes, a dangerous ball in by Adam Livingstone had been kept out, only for Babos to try send the ball into the bottom corner, but it had been blocked on the line.

The as the first half was coming to an end, Yusifu Ceesay doubled his side’s lead, with a drilled shot from a tight angle to find the top corner.

It was 3-0 by 70 minutes when Jack Tolley found space on the right, made his way into the box, got past the defender and slotted it past the keeper.

He very nearly got a second of the game just after,, a ball across from Babos found the winger but the leg of Welch denied the Bulls a fourth goal.
