York City deletes tweet after it comes back to haunt them minutes later during match

York City deletes a tweet of theirs after it comes back to haunt them just minutes later during the match against Southport on Saturday.

The Minstermen were unable to hang onto their lead in a 3-3 draw at Haig Avenue, left red faced by not just that but publishing a cheeky post that Southport were on the front foot.

York had rallied from 2-1 down to hold a 3-2 advantage heading into the game’s final few minutes but conceded a late equaliser, a result which keeps them below sixth-placed Southport.

The tweet read: “84′ – BREAKING: Southport now playing with a bit of urgency”

But two minutes later, they deleted it after fans caught on to mock, and York wrote: “88′ – Goal. Jordan Archer (Southport). Cross in from the right meets the head of Archer at the back post who nods down and into the back of the net. (3-3)

The game finished 3-3, with the result meaning York sit 7th in the table, with 48 points from 30 games played. Southport are in 6th position with 49 points after 31 games.

Speaking about the last minute goal from Jordan Archer, Askey said: “It’s disappointing that we didn’t deal with the ball down the line.

“First of all we allowed it to bounce then we allowed them to win the corner.

“The ball has come back out from the corner and we haven’t stayed with the man and I know exactly who didn’t stay with their man because everybody knows who they should have from corners.

“That’s disappointing when they lose their man on a corner.

“When the wind is blowing like that, as a forward you always favour that when it’s coming in when you’re coming onto it at the back stick.

“When you’re a goal ahead with only a few minutes to go, then you expect to see it out.”

The windy weather and a pitch was described to be a far cry from the one at the LNER Community Stadium and led to a scrappy affair between the two sides.

“It’s not conducive to playing football, but it probably suits them,” Askey said. It’s very difficult to play.

“But having said that, we did create a lot of chances through sheer pressure. It’s disappointing that we didn’t convert more.

“It’s disappointing that we haven’t scored more but when you score three you expect to win the game.

“Despite the conditions, I thought we did ever so well and deserved to win the game.”

On Olly Dyson scoring York’s third goal, Askey said: “You need your wide men to score goals, which we’ve spoken about before.

“If you’re playing in those positions, with the way that we play, then we need wide men to get goals, as well as our midfield players.

“I thought Lenell (John-Lewis), even though he didn’t score, caused them all sorts of problems.”

Askley felt the game had a slow feel, mostly in the first half as Southport tried to keep York at bay after taking an early lead.

“As they’ve got to do is book whoever it is, and if they just book them, then they’ll have sorted it out and they won’t do it again.

“It’s so frustrating because you want to see teams play football. When teams play against us, they want to slow it down and get (men) behind the ball.

“It’s supposed to be entertainment and that’s not football for me.

“We tell them but they should see it. But they don’t do anything about it.

“What I was really pleased about was the spirit of the team. And they look like a team now.

“We’ve got two home games coming up, so hopefully we can take advantage of that and push on from there.”
