CLUB STATEMENT
York City Football Club are delighted to confirm the appointment of David Webb as our new first team manager.
Webb – who has experience of different high-level roles at several Premier League and European clubs – will take charge of the team from Monday with his first game being next weekend’s trip to Woking.
Michael Morton joins from Leeds United’s academy to become Webb’s assistant manager.
Webb started in professional football as an academy coach with the likes of AFC Wimbledon, Crystal Palace, and Tottenham Hotspur. At Crystal Palace he was noted for the discovery of Wilfried Zaha, and talent identification has been a skill that he has been credited with throughout his career.
Following a spell with Millwall as their head of academy coaching, Webb transitioned to off field roles in talent identification, recruitment, and analysis with Southampton, AFC Bournemouth, and a return to Tottenham.
At Bournemouth Webb was the Head of First Team Recruitment supporting Eddie Howe during the Cherries’ promotion to the Premier League and he played a key role in several important signings such as now-England star Callum Wilson.
Mauricio Pochettino, who previously worked with Webb at Southampton, brought him into his backroom team at Tottenham Hotspur as Head of Elite Identification and Player Development.
The UEFA ‘A’ licensed coach worked as a consultant for Hoffenheim and Real Betis before joining Östersund FK as Technical Director in 2019, a role which also saw him assist with coaching.
Like former Östersund manager Graham Potter, Webb supplemented his coaching development with higher education and has an honours degree in Sports Science and a master’s degree in Sports Psychology.
His most recent position was Head of Football Operations at Huddersfield Town which he left in 2020.
Joining Webb’s management team at York City, fellow UEFA ‘A’ licensed coach Michael Morton leaves his role as Youth Development Phase Lead at Leeds United which he has held since 2018.
Morton started his coaching career with the Whites in 2005 before making the move to Manchester City working in academy coaching and talent identification.
A young but vastly experienced coach, he continued to work in youth development as head of i2i academy during a spell in which the York-based academy produced nine professional footballers. During this time, he got a taste of senior first team management at Tadcaster Albion.
On the appointments, York City chairman Glen Henderson said: “I am incredibly pleased to welcome David and Michael to the club as our new first team management team.
“The key to this appointment was finding someone who aligns with our long-term vision for the club, and David was the standout candidate from the start.
“He is talented and experienced across all aspects of managing a football club, from first team management, player development, scouting, coaching, motivation, and with an excellent understanding of how the football business works.
“He brings with him a talented coach in Michael, who has a track history of playing a key part in the development of top-class footballers.”
Fans reacted as York City confirm the appointment of the highly rated manager after the controversial sacking of John Askey…
@mattrushbrooke: Going from John Askey to David Webb is like going from dating Pixie Lott to Heather Trott.
@NicoYork: Tough act to follow but good luck to him. We can’t go back to NLN ffs
@DavidWardyWard: This is exactly the sort of appointment I’d expect from someone like Henderson. Nothing more to add.
@bobbinsoncrusoe: Good luck to him, onwards and upwards, first job is steadying the ship after the previous manager left us with an inadequate squad.
@jamiecr05489374: This is a gamble. It will go either way.
@DavidNichols80: Wow. Quite an amazing CV. Lack of first team management is a worry, but looks a positive appointment to me
@iandwightbenton: They look like competition winners – good luck !
@tomhwilliams23: Really interesting and exciting appointment from #YCFC. In a similar mould to Luke Williams at #Notts Webb is a young forward thinking coach. He also has held recruitment roles; could translate well in a league with no transfer window. Always a big fan of a different career path
@YcfcOllie: #hendersonout
@joshuajoshy123: John Askey’s Red-Blue army. #hendersonout #sacktheboard
@tombarneybarnes: No John Askey is it? #sacktheboard #hendersonout
@haughycfc:
Good luck to them
We’re 6 points from play offs with 25 games to go
Support them, and give them a chance
Not their fault henderson sacked Askey
@GregDean5: Absolutely no experience working/coaching with a first team. Backroom work completely different to being a manager dealing with different personalities and characters of a player on a day to day basis! Seems odd going from very experienced to zero experience. Lucky if it pays off
@_morgan_bruce: If he’s allowed to do his job properly I have a bit of hope. His interview was weird but also kinds promising. A lot of name dropping but seems to be a smart bloke who knows football #ycfc
@Dan19451945: Great makes sense sack top manager bring in so one with no experience!
@TommyHymas: “The standout candidate from the start”…..hmmmm. Really hope to be proven wrong, but this seems like an experiment/gamble being made by the charlatan of a chairman that could see us combust! Good luck to the pair of them. #hendersonout
@moxon_will: Very interesting appointments but let’s get behind these 2 and the lads and turn the form around! #YCFC
@PegRogerio: I think you’ve spelt John Askey wrong.
@TimLB24: Don’t envy the guy. coming into a club where the fans are calling for the chairmans head and he’ll be judged for it. A club that Fired the previous well loved manager in one of the worst ways for no reason. Ill be surprised if he’s around long #YCFC
@Max_Innes: First time as head coach or manager? You just sacked someone who had been promoted from this division but happy days because David watch Zaha play football. Poor poor decisions. #hendersonout
@MattyMUFC4: Who? #hendersonout
