York City apologise after retweeting a Twitter post by Tommy Robinson

York City apologise after retweeting a Twitter post by Tommy Robinson who had been publishing tweets from his rally in London.

The National League outfit said sorry and claimed they don’t support any of what Robinson had to say, or make any political views.

@_morgan_bruce came across it and wrote: “Before they remove the retweet, does anyone want to explain why the club is retweeting Tommy Robinson posts? #ycfc”

The club said: “The club does not in any circumstance support Tommy Robinson, or make any political or otherwise statements that could cause offence to supporters.

“The repost has since been taken down and we would like to apologise if this repost caused any offence to anybody. Please be assured we are looking into this as a matter of urgency. #YCFC 🔴🔵”

Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley Lennon, said in his post: “We’re setting up in Trafalgar Square for the biggest patriotic rally the UK has ever seen 🇬🇧”

It came just hours before York’s final pre-season friendly at home, in which they take on League Two side Notts County.

But as can be seen, York fans didn’t expect to see a Tommy Robinson tweet on the official club’s social media account in the build-up to Saturday’s match.

Thousands of people arrived in central London for Tommy Robinson’s ‘Uniting The Kingdom’ event, on The Strand, before they march off to Trafalgar Square.

The crowd of people, which includes actor-turned-political activist Laurence Fox, chanted ‘England, England, England’, ‘England till I die’ as they set off.

Speaking on a live-stream outside the Royal Courts of Justice, Robinson said a ‘line in the sand has been drawn.

‘This is the biggest gathering of patriots Europe has seen, and it’s happening in Great Britain. Get your people organised, unify your countries.

‘Enough is enough, a line in the sand has been drawn. We’re being replaced no longer.’

Fans gave their reaction upon seeing York City apologise after retweeting a Twitter post by Tommy Robinson…

@HuwJ85: I highly doubt York City has more than 1 full time social media person on the books and it’s whoever wrote this that also pressed the RT button. Somebody getting sacked on Monday when the big bosses come in.

@kentwix12: One regular day of York City Football Club. That’s all I ask for. Will never happen.

@jackstringer19: 27th July and the Vanarama has gone full Vanarama. We are so back!

@TheDB30: There will not be a ball kicked for 2 weeks but the Vanarama is truly back!

@alenbardet: Classic #ycfc this 😂

@LUFCTheo: Not even back in the season and club football is so back

@bixie2016: Please release the person responsible if this wasn’t a hack

@matty_ycfc: One normal day of this football club please

@BradleyFarnill: What did I miss 😭

@FuManChuCaChu: Why are you even apologising. Someone has made a bit of a fuck up, but nobody is hurt. Too many fannies that get easily offended.

@IIISxltyIII: York City FC reposting a Tommy Robinson tweet wasn’t on my bucket list for 2024… #YCFC #YorkCityFC #YorkCity #Minstermen #BanterEra #TommyRobinson

@WillCrisp13: York City supporting Tommy Robinson wasn’t exactly what I was expecting in the build up to Notts County in preseason #ycfc

@haughycfc: York City retweeting Tommy Robinson rallies 😬

@morganzwynne: Another solid addition to the banta era

@YCFC1922_: Announce which Media team member is an EDL member…

@lotslottie16: Oh dear… #ycfc

@sm_ycfc: What a club 🤣

@MPW1981: Guessing the social media guy forgot to switch accounts.

@brianstokes92: Considering I was once suspended as Yorkie the Lion for a retweet relating to stewarding at the club. I do hope retweeting fascists on an official account is treated with the same heavy handedness. #ycfc

@_morgan_bruce: Last home pre season game and an hour before kick off we’re putting out this statement. What a club 🤣

@mally308: I imagine, by accident as a football club shouldn’t show any political allegiances either left or right despite what the supporters may personally voice. Remember there is a person at the other end of your accusation. Easy to press / catch a button!

@foreverayellow: seeing a tommy robinson post on york city’s twitter video isn’t what i expected to see today haha

Ronan Scott: Seems like a mistake but I would like clarification from the club. We shouldn’t have anything to do with people like him!
