Yeovil Town have took to condemn ‘discriminatory chanting’ heard during a penalty kick in the National League match against York City.
The club have since issued a statement on the matter and have launched an investigation to find the culprits plus what part of the ground it came from.
Lenell John-Lewis had an eventful afternoon missing a penalty and then scored the only goal as John Askey’s York secured a 1-0 win at Yeovil.
The experienced forward was very busy throughout the game and forced a save from Yeovil goalkeeper Grant Smith in the first half.
York were awarded a penalty with 20 minutes to go when Josh Staunton was penalised for handball, but John-Lewis’ effort was saved by Smith.
He made amends with 11 minutes left on the clock when he controlled a low cross into the box before his deflected shot found a way past Smith.
I wonder why Yeovil would take this clip down of Lenell taking our penalty… pic.twitter.com/v8XIWoXLKp

We have reported the incident to the FA, who are investigating, and we are happy to leave the investigation in their hands.
As a club, York City deplores discrimination in all of its forms, and will never tolerate such behaviour. We will make no further comment on the incident at this time.
Fans gave their reaction as Yeovil condemn ‘discriminatory chanting’ heard during a penalty kick in the match against York …
@YfrontFanzine: That is abhorrent!
@YcFc_Sisso: Worrying that you didn’t notice it (or care) when editing the highlights and found it acceptable to be posted publicly.
@G03Jamie: Take action… identify the fan and ban them indefinitely… no place for that behavior
@Hakosuka172: Call it what it is. Racism.
@elvingtonred2: The very fact that not one of your supporters did anything, tells me that you have a big problem. It’s not the first time is it?
@AndrewConcanno7: Find them, ban them. Simple
@Walwynstatue: Disgusting behaviour from your fans. Why wasn’t it reported to the police when it happened as I’m sure people in the crowd will have heard it at the time. Why is this still happening?!
@AndrewFoot84: Find them, ban them, never let them near a football ground again. How does this even enter a person’s mindset? Morons.
@GoalscorerC: What’s missing from this statement is the fact that they removed the video with the chanting from their website and hoped no-one noticed. And the fact that it’s only three years ago that Haringey players walked off the pitch due to racist abuse from the stands. Grim.
@AlexBrianWhite: Lots of the “we’re not that sort of club” stuff will come off the back of it. This is the third accusation in three years. And that’s without including chants about black players dicks that Kick It Out, and others, have called racist.
@DanWrexham: Fucking hell the Varanama is off the fucking charts this season and we’re only 7 games in
@di1cox: Hahahahahaha sensational
@Chris_Fox82: Hope the person is found and banned.
@rmf80: Remove the word discriminatory as the word Racist is a better description of what we’re hearing.
@colin796: Definitely no way of brushing this under the carpet now is there @YTFC
@TommyHymas: Is this acceptable @YTFC??? Or is just editing it out of your own highlights, and making no comment sufficient enough action?? How do your own black players feel about it???
@izzy_hendryx: The fact @YTFC tried to brush this behaviour under the carpet, by removing this video from their social media, makes them just as bad as the culprits that will be held accountable. Sort it out @TheVanaramaNL
@kitcub: Absolutely abhorrent behaviour 😧 this can’t just be ignored or explained away. This needs action, wasn’t acceptable decades ago, certainly isn’t in 2022.
@YCSP84: Calling all #YTFC fans who attended the #ycfc game on Saturday. Did you witness anyone in your section of the ground make these racist chants? If so please report it. Call them out. There is no place in football or society for this abhorrent behaviour.
@GullandUtm: Awful behaviour 🤕
@YeovilFanzone: I cant get my head around this. There would have been plenty of people around who surely heard this if this has been picked up on camera? If you heard this & didn’t report / say anything then now is your time to speak up. Yet another racism case on our hands. Disgusting. #ytfc
@watts_jess_: Absolutely disgraceful behaviour. Yet another embarrassing time to be a Yeovil fan. Hope the people responsible are found and banned ❌ #ytfc
@yorkvillan: I don’t know what’s worse, the racist Yeovil fans or the fact @YTFC hid it from their highlights with no comment whatsoever @kickitout #Racists #YTFC #YCFC
@lukeoafc_: Christ alive, from a player battering another to monkey noises directed at one, @TheVanaramaNL for you ladies and gents
@scatters03: Appalling, no place for it. #kickitout
@EzPerez1: I would assume the police and club are currently investigating as whoever is responsible for the racism will be taken to court and banned as well as named and shamed. If they’re not looking into it already then there’s something seriously wrong down there. Disgraceful.
@JoeBillGibbo: I’m shocked at how somebody – in 2022 – can make monkey noises at an English football ground and nobody has said a thing at the time! I’d like to think if this happened at York, it would be reported and dealt with swiftly. Yeovil now need to find the individual and ban them.
