‘Yeah, they’re going up’ – Fans react as Wrexham announce two new signings

‘Yeah, they’re going up’ – Fans react as Wrexham announce two new signings as Matty James and Jón Daði Böðvarsson.

The signing of experienced players like Matty James, known for his midfield prowess, and Jón Daði Böðvarsson, bringing forward line experience, has been well-received.

Fans see these acquisitions as bolstering the team’s depth and quality, especially given the context of recent injuries and suspensions within the squad. And yet despite going through that, and having had Paul Mullin out until recently, they sit second in League One.

The signings reflect well on the club’s strategy, with fans appreciating the proactive approach by the management in addressing squad needs, especially during a challenging part of the season and with a busy schedule coming up.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Wrexham AFC are pleased to announce the signing of midfielder Matty James on a short-term contract.

The former Bristol City man, who was a free agent, has penned a contract until January, and has been added to our registered squad.

James, 33, said on signing: “It feels great to be given the opportunity to play again and to join a Club that’s moving in a direction that everybody’s watching.

“I’m over the moon, and can’t wait to get started.

“It was a weird process for me, not being in a routine. I was training at Leicester, which I’m thankful for, but to be back inside a men’s environment here with the lads – they’re a fantastic bunch of lads and I’ve loved every minute so far.

“I want to enjoy playing football again, to try to help – be around the group, and whatever the gaffer wants me to do, I’ll do. I want to build up in terms of fitness and game time – and there’s a lot of games coming up, so I want to earn some minutes and move forward from there.”

A product of the Manchester United academy, James was a promotion winner with Leicester City and was with the Foxes when they won the Premier League in 2016.

Since his departure from Leicester, he made more than 100 appearances across three seasons in the EFL Championship with Bristol City, before leaving in the summer.

He joins Jón Daði Böðvarsson in arriving at the Club on a short-term deal.

On their signings, manager Phil Parkinson said: “I’d like to welcome Jón and Matty to the Club. With injuries to George Evans, Jack Marriott and Steven Fletcher, it was important to bring them in, and we look forward to working with the two of them.”

Wrexham AFC are also pleased to announce the signing of Icelandic international striker Jón Daði Böðvarsson on a short-term contract pending clearance.

The 32-year-old, who most recently played for Bolton Wanderers, has signed until January and will be added to our 22-man registered squadlist.

The experienced forward has won 64 international caps and now enters his tenth season in English football, having first arrived in 2016.

On signing, he said: “It’s great to be at a Club like Wrexham. Everyone knows the history by now and it’s just a very exciting Club to be a part of. I’m delighted to be here, and hopefully I can help the Club achieve further success.

“It’s good to be back in the dressing room. I really missed it – I think my wife was going crazy! I’ve been training and trying to keep myself fit, but it’s good to be back in the environment and to work on getting my sharpness back.

“The manager and the coaches have been really good with me, getting straight back into it.

“It’s about finding myself again over the next few months. I want to get my confidence back for myself, work hard for the Club, and see where it gets me.”

Böðvarsson started his career in his home country, with Selfoss, and moved to Viking in Norway in 2013 – spending three seasons with the Tippeligaen club. After a season with FC Kaiserslauten in Germany, he moved to Wolves in 2016.

Bodvarsson has since played Championship football with Reading and Millwall too, before three seasons in League one with Bolton – winning the EFL Trophy in 2023.

He made his international debut in 2012 and was part of the Icelandic squad at Euro 2016 – playing in the 2-1 win against England to earn a place in the quarter-finals – and at the 2018 World Cup.

He joins midfielder Matty James in signing a short-team deal, and on their signings manager Phil Parkinson said: “I’d like to welcome Jón and Matty to the Club. With injuries to George Evans, Jack Marriott and Steven Fletcher, it was important to bring them in, and we look forward to working with the two of them.”
