Wycombe fume at refereeing decisions in defeat to Sheffield Wednesday with Duff sent off

Wycombe Wanderers fume at a number of refereeing decisions in the 2-1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday with Michael Duff also sent off.

The Chairboys had gone in front after just 6 minutes, Cauley Woodrow jumping on a loose ball. But then Sheffield Wednesday levelled shortly after, Louie Barry on the rebound.

The Sheffield Wednesday went ahead on the verge of half time, Callum Slattery was deemed to be fouled by Woodrow. Referee David Rock pointing to the spot and Jamal Lowe scoring from it.

Wednesday are up to 2nd in the League One standings, 9 points after 4 games played, Wycombe meanwhile are 22nd with 2 points from their opening 4 league games.

Interviewer: “Alex, a really frustrating result to take tonight, but in terms of performance, night and day from Saturday and a lot to be pleased about.”

Alex: “Yeah, completely agree. A lot to be pleased about. We needed a response and a reaction from the players and we certainly got that, and really disappointed to lose the game. I don’t think we did deserve to lose the game.

“There were decisions within the game and I’m loathe obviously to to make reference to them but they were deciding factors in the game we should have a penalty with the blatant hand ball in the second half from Caolan’s shot and the penalty that was given to Sheffield Wednesday, just wasn’t a penalty, it’s as simple as that and those are game divining moments that have ultimately led to the score line that we’ve got.”

He said, as per Bucks Evening Press: “He [Callum Slattery] is on his way down before he even gets close to Cauley.

“He doesn’t make any contact with him.”

On not being awarded a spot kick: “We have a definite penalty when Caolan shoots. I think it was Otegbayo who saved it with his hands.

“He literally dived and saved the ball and produced an action that a goalkeeper would produce.

“How that’s not been picked up and seen, I don’t know.”

 

Interviewer: “Fast start Cauley Woodrow two and two now for him and that kind of hopefully set the tempo for us but such a shame to be pegged back so soon after.”

Alex: “Yeah, that was a real shame. I mean, we started the game with some real impetus. We could tell that it was going to be a high paced, fast and frenetic game right from the start. We matched them in all areas of the pitch. Cauley took his goal really well. And yeah, the real disappointment was that we couldn’t preserve that lead for long enough because I think if we did, the outcome of the game probably would have been different as we’d have grown in confidence and belief. And that’s something that we desperately needed off the back of Saturday’s result.”

Interviewer: “Obviously, Michael was not here doing the post match press today. I know you don’t want to put words in his mouth, but what was his message to the boys after the game?”

Alex: “Very similar to what I’ve said at the beginning of the interview. He, you know, the gaffer wanted a response. He wanted to react and Saturday was hugely disappointing in all elements for all of us. That’s not representative of the way his teams have ever looked whether it’s at this club or at previous clubs and I think the lads went a long way tonight towards obviously atoning for that because that’s something that you know you should never see from a Wycombe Wanderers team that he manages and all the good elements that we saw and many of the wins that we accrued last year I think were evident tonight. We came out the wrong side of the score line because of issues in both boxes. Whether that’s down to us obviously, you know, not showing enough composure and more of a clinical nature with the opportunities we’ve had and also the things that have also alluded to that, you know, didn’t go our way from a refereeing perspective.”

Interviewer: “Yeah, it felt like the fans felt a bit of injustice, but also felt the the effort that was being made by the team, really got behind them, you know, especially in the second half, a brilliant atmosphere and and almost got us enough to did enough to get us to that point.”

Alex: “Yeah, the fans were great. They really were. They drove the boys on, creating a good atmosphere. There’s a real edge to the game, wasn’t I think you get that under the lights as well. They’re a big club, the biggest club in this league arguably along with Leicester. So obviously there was a you know a little bit on the game in that sense, but yeah, the supporters were great. I think the players fed off that. But it was important that we gave the supporters something to hang on to tonight. We, as I say, don’t want to allude to it too much, but we didn’t do that Saturday and we certainly did tonight. And as long as they see that effort, that intensity, that desire, that energy, I think that’s a catalyst for them to get involved in the game. And you know, if we’re doing that in unison, if you like, with fans, supporters, players, all in unison pushing on, we got the quality of player here to still have a really positive season and that’s something that we still believe in.

Owls boss Henrik Pedersen, as per the club website: “I think we had a good beginning of the game and then they scored. I think we hit it in the back, a little bit of a random goal. It was nothing to do with organisation.

“But the mentality when we started after the goal was exactly the same as before. And I like this mentality that we don’t lose focus, we stay to the game plan, we stay with the culture that we’re going to score, that we believe and we trust everything.

“Then, how we came back, it was very strong. And then 2-1. I think the last 20 minutes of the game we were generally in control.”

The only negative for the Owls against Michael Duff’s side was that Barry was forced off injured soon after scoring.
