Wrexham have taken to pay tribute to the Gresford Colliery Disaster with their new kits for the 2024/25 season which begins next weekend.
It happened on the 22nd of September, 1934, at Gresford Colliery with an explosion and underground fire tragically claimed the lives of 266 men.
This remains one of Britain’s worst coal mining disasters. Sadly, only eleven of the victims were recovered due to the decision to permanently seal the damaged sections of the colliery.
The disaster is commemorated by a memorial on Bluebell Lane in Pandy, near the old pit wheel.
A voiceover for the League One club’s video below, says: “In the early hours of September 22, 1934, at 02:08 a.m. an explosion rocked the Dennis section of the Gresford mine.
“Nearly 500 men were underground at the time, a number much higher than normal, as miners had doubled up on shifts in order to watch Wrexham play Tranmere later that afternoon.
“The Gresford disaster remains one of the worst mining disasters in British history, with 266 men losing their lives, the majority of whom were left buried in the mine where they perished.
“This year, as we mark 90 years since the disaster, Wrexham AFC is proud to continue to ensure memorial of the disaster remains sacrosanct at our football club, remembering not Just the 266 men who lost their lives, but the families in our community who were torn apart.
“Were proud to wear a tribute to the victims on the back of our playing shirts.”

CLUB STATEMENT:
Wrexham AFC are pleased to confirm our new black, Macron Away kit for the 2024/25 season will be available to buy in store and online from today (Thursday August 1).
Our red home and gold third shirts are also be available to buy in store – with all three dragon-themed shirts for the 2024/25 season now launched.
Wrexham AFC players will wear the black kit for the first time in Saturday’s pre-season friendly at home to Fleetwood Town.
As we look ahead to the 90th anniversary of the Gresford Colliery Disaster, on September 22 2024, the shirts again feature our tribute to the 266 victims of the disaster, on the nape.
Players from the men’s and women’s first team visited the memorial to the disaster in Gresford as part of the kit’s launch.
The collared Macron shirt also continues the dragon theme present across our 2024/25 kits, with a dragon scale pattern embedded within the design. The button-up collar features a more retro look, in our 160th year.
Again, consistent across all our shirts for this season, it is crafted from Macron’s Eco Fabric – a 100% recycled polyester fabric.
The Wrexham crest is silicone, as is the Macron hero logo – both in a striking white to contrast with the shirt, as is front-of-shirt sponsor United Airlines’ logo. Sleeve sponsor HP also features.
The shirt costs £60 for adults (5XL-M), £50 for juniors (S-3XS) and £40.00 for sizes 3-6m to 1-2y. Official Wrexham AFC members can also benefit from 10 per cent off the cost of the black away or gold third kits – all members have been emailed their exclusive one time use discount code, for use online only.
This is how fans reacted as Wrexham pay tribute to the Gresford Colliery Disaster with their new 2024/25 away kit…
@robj_j: Love this. Fitting tribute and a really nice shirt, albeit a bit different.
@adpeers: Would love that Gresford memorial to be on the back of all our shirts moving forward. Well done 👏🏻
@78Spirit: A fitting tribute. Any truth in a donation being made to the Miners rescue centre from the proceeds?
@tonyjonescomm: The way the club continue to acknowledge the disaster is admirable. Devastating for the community at the time. Could @WrexhamMiners benefit from a percentage of sales @MacronSports?
David Perkins: I was one of the two bricklayers that cladded the slate on to the plinth. At that monument , very proud. 🙂
Conwy Ap Adam: Always wanted this to replace the feathers.
Paul Austin: Heartfelt tribute that from the club, I also echo what some fans are saying in having this on the club crest
Claire Bellis: I’m very impressed by the Hollywood Lads who own my home place’s footy team. Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney evidently place a lot of importance on good relations with the local community, and the 2024/25 away shirt commemorates the 90th anniversary of the Gresford disaster. I think this is respectful and classy; well done to everyone involved in making this shirt.
