Worcester City and Great Wakering Rovers fans clash after FA Vase semi final

Worcester City and Great Wakering Rovers fans clash outside the ground after Saturday afternoon’s FA Vase semi final first leg tie.

It’s alleged that stones were thrown as well as bottles of alcohol between the two sets of fans before fighting with one falling in the middle of the road nearby a coach as fans were making their way out of the Sixways Stadium.

Some were left with head injuries, with more getting involved before the situation soon calmed down.

The game itself, which originally been due to take place last week but was postponed to a waterlogged pitch, saw Elliott Hartley grab the only goal of the first leg, curling a beautiful effort in to the top corner from the edge of the box to put Worcester ahead.

Wakering had chances but couldn’t convert, with Great Wakering Rovers boss Marcus Bowers feeling it is still all to play for in his side.

“I’m pleased but slightly disappointed,” he said, per Echo News.

“I thought we had the chances but it sets it up for a really good tie next week now.

“We can go into it with confidence too.

“I thought we made enough chances to win the game if I’m honest and it gives us belief that next week we can score goals against them to get through.”

“Do we chuck on a forward to get a goal or do we just take it?

“It was more about staying in the tie and having something to go on next week which we’ve definitely done.”

Worcester City are currently six points clear of second placed Corsham Town at the top of the Hellenic League Premier Division with four games in hand and could win the title in midweek, needing a point at Thornbury Town to be crowned champions. Worcester have also won 23 consecutive games.

“We’ve got Hullbridge Tuesday and Buckhurst Hill Thursday so it’s a busy few days,” Bowers added.

“But we’ll be doing all we can to win all three games.”

Worcester captain Adam Mace and boss Chris Cornes gave their post-match reaction. Mace said, per Worcester News: “You never judge anyone on league position, they are a really well organised outfit.

“We didn’t take them for granted in any way shape or form and it was probably a bog-standard first-leg of a cup final.

“But we are delighted to take a lead with us to Southend next week. I thought Elliot Hartley was absolutely brilliant when he came on and scores a fantastic goal.

“He was probably disappointed to be sitting on the bench but his attitude was brilliant and to come on and do what he did, hats off to him.”

Cornes said: “1-0 is hardly here nor there really and it’s a slender lead.

“I think their game plan was that they would have probably taken a 1-0 scoreline at the start of the day. Even at 1-0 down, they didn’t really play with any intensity so they will probably be the happier of the two sides.

“The feeling in the dressing room (City) is a little bit quiet because the performance wasn’t really there from us. We are 1-0 up from the first-leg and I would have taken that at the start of the day happily.

“But there were a few below-par performances. But, it’s football and we cannot be 80/90 percent every week, sometimes you have to dig a result out and play what’s ahead of you.

“I am happy with the result, why wouldn’t I be, but we are only half-way there.”

As it stands, it’s Worcester City who will face Romford in the final at Wembley after they beat Lincoln United 10-9 on penalties in the other semi-final on Saturday.

Having drawn the first leg 2-2, the winner of the game at Ashby Avenue would take the spot in the Wembley final.

But, after a goalless draw the game went to a penalty shootout, with every player taking one spot-kick each, and the score tied at 9-9.

Matt Cotton sent his effort wide, and allowed Jamie Hursit to net the winning penalty past goalkeeper Jack Steggles.
