Wigan Athletic were relegated in a dramatic finale after Reading’s survival chances go down to the final day with thanks to a Yakou Meite equaliser in the 93rd minute.
A Charlie Hughes header in the final 10 minutes gave the Latics the lead and went from being relegated to staying up.
Wigan’s keeper Jamie Jones couldn’t keep out Meite scoring from close range after a corner game in to earn a draw.
Reading are now within one point of safety, but has played two games more than 22nd place Huddersfield Town.
Reading could be relegated next weekend before the final match of the season if results are against them.
The Royals are down to the third tier before their last game, on the 8th of May against Huddersfield, if the Terriers pick up four points from their two games in hand, and Rotherham beat Middlesbrough on the 1st of May.

Reading’s Noel Hunt said post-match: “Listen, we’re relying on other results now. And we’ll be keeping a close eye on them. We’ve just got to wait in hope. And, hopefully, we’ve got something to play for (at Huddersfield) on the Monday. I’m disappointed and gutted in terms of the result and the scoreline.
“But in terms of the performance, how we dominated the game and the character that we showed, I couldn’t be more proud of them. If the ball had dropped for us more, we could have scored four or five more goals. What the boys gave on the pitch today should be the minimum requirement for this club. The players are devastated in the dressing room but they can be proud of what they have done today. They have been written off for much of the season but, from the minute I stepped in here, they’ve shown just what good people and what good professionals they are.”
Wigan’s Shaun Maloney: “It’s a really difficult feeling at the moment. It’s been a really difficult day for everyone, a deeply painful day. It’s been a real mix of emotions. The players have given me everything since I took over and I couldn’t have asked for any more effort from them. We’ve won games and we’ve lost games but, in terms of the group of players, they’ve been immense for me.
“It’s been such a unique situation here at the club, especially with the three points deduction (for failing to pay players). We then knew it was going to be very difficult for us. But for the players and the fans, just a massive thank you to them for all they have given me and their club. At the end of the season, the table doesn’t lie. That’s fair. But from what the players have given me, they haven’t been one of the worst three teams in that time. I’ve now got to make sure that we don’t ever have a season like this again – on or off the pitch.”
Twitter users reacted as Wigan and Reading fans attempt to throw punches in a pathetic fight after the dramatic match on Saturday…
@KieranMcGuire: The lad in the white polo is having it hahaha. 1+2 Slip and roll.
@RDG1871: Top work lad in white top, though. 1-2 duck RH… Twice.
@RDG1871: Text from my teenage daughter while waiting for bus: could just hear this *bap* *bap* *bap* coming from about 10m away from us in the car park and look over and this scrawny middle aged man is fighting all these even scrawnier young lads 😭😭 men with tiny bollocks.” 😂
@RFCJAAY: what’s the fucking point man, not a gcse in sight
@RFCFan77: Fair play to the lad in the white polo, getting stuck in 😂
@RSheehan_RDG: I think they’ll be a few banning orders issued following the ugly scenes today, whether it’s this incident or the skirmish between fans sat in Club 1871 and the away fans. I know it’s emotionally charged right now, but violence is never welcome in football! @TVP_Football 👀
@razor5edge: How’s the lad in white swinging 1 v 2 whilst his “boys” are casually watching? Upgrade your cru G.
@ronniemac93: Who’s the fan in the white polo?? Better boxer than AJ 😂 #readingfc
@SeanMobsby: If you’re a partner of one of the lads involved with this, I’d be pretty concerned about spending my time around a person who can’t emotionally handle getting relegated without getting into a fight. *This* is embarrassing #readingfc
@Marlin2811: Great windmilling from the lad in white, the club should buy him a stone island jumper for showing more fight than the pricks on the pitch
@tomatki: If only their players had shown this much fight 🤣 💩
@scottyfroggatt: I’ll never understand how people feel the need to fight with fans of other teams. Just watch the game and support your club 😂
@PjR1293: Reading are the funniest fan base, went a few years back when they played Newport county and outside they were giving it massive to the Newport lot until they turned and ran at the fence that separated them 🤣 I’ve never seen so many bottoms of gazelles run past me before 🤣🤣
@jamiewillby: Fair play to the Reading lad in white. Good hands tbf.
@CraigNewm22: That’s a proper relegation scrap
@RoyalReading106: Most entertaining thing all day #Readingfc
@Luke_Massey: I don’t condone fighting, especially over football but that dude in the white polo was doing business.
