“Why our football club is offering FREE season tickets”

In this article, we take a look at Lewisham Borough who explain “why our football club is offering FREE season tickets” this season.

Toby Palmer, a volunteer for the Southern Counties East Football League team explains that they are giving back to the local community while also explaining how attracting fans to a lower league club is hard, especially in the area of London when there are so many very successful ones at all levels.

He said via londonist.com: “We are Lewisham Borough Community FC, but few people in Lewisham would have ever heard about us β€” even though the next highest club in the borough above us is the famous Millwall.

“Recently, we all sat down as volunteers and tried to address how we could get more fans through the door for the coming season. We came up with the idea of offering a free season ticket to all Lewisham borough residents. Everyone has a team they support, but we want them to be proud to support their local team.

“We’re going through a very tough time financially as a country, and although we’re deeply proud of our borough, it’s one of the more deprived areas in London, so the current climate is likely to hit our community harder than others.

“The strategy is to get as many people into our ground as possible. Once we get more, we can start to bring in more sponsors which will help cover the financial deficit of offering these season tickets for free.

“With our initiative, families or people new to the area looking for something to do on a weekend can meet their neighbours and feel they’re represented on the pitch.

“They can get behind their community for free, and hopefully it benefits everyone.

“Lewisham borough residents can claim their free season ticket by emailing their name and address to tickets@lbcfc.co.uk before 30 September 2022.

“Sponsors interested in helping support the growth of the club should get in touch with toby.palmer@lbcfc.co.uk”

Lewisham Borough (Community) Football Club are based in Catford, in the London Borough of Lewisham. Formed by a merger of three clubs – Elms, Moonshot and Ten Em Bee – in 2003, they are currently members of the Southern Counties East League Division One and play at the Ladywell Arena.

The club formed in 2003 and were admitted to Division One West of the Kent County League and went to win the division at the first attempt. They were promoted to the Premier Division, which they won in 2005–06. In 2011, they were founder members of the Kent Invicta League. The club subsequently finished bottom of the league in 2012–13, 2014–15 and 2015–16. In 2016 the Kent Invicta league merged into the Southern Counties East League, becoming its Division One. Lewisham finished bottom of the division again in its inaugural season.

Shortly before the start of the 2018–19 season, Lewisham resigned from the Southern Counties East League. However, they were reinstated to the league a day later.

Their best FA Vase performance was the first qualifying round, reaching that stage in 2017–18 and 2018–19.

In 2021/22, they finished the Southern Counties East League Division One season in 9th place out of 20 teams, picking up 54 points from 38 games played.

@DSJ_Bets: Wow what a gesture πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»

@ForeverOUFC: now this is just incredible to see, completely agree its so tough for clubs in and around london wanting and trying to raise the attendance but struggle due to competition etc, non league day is vital, but also doing gestures like this will make such an impact and other clubs could take note. it takes just one matchday to captivate someone and bring fans back on repeat, whether for the football or a way of mixing with society, getting out the house and spending time with friends.

@footielad: fantastic news! really hope everyone nearby the club take advantage of this. never seen a team do this before so this is extra special, get yourself down there. you won’t regret it, especially when you know how much this benefits the club and can help save their future

@LianPate: What a fantastic thing to do. There will be some future die-hard @LewishamBoroCFC fans created from this, you just know it 😍 #footballdreams
