West Ham fans protest against the board with plane flying banner over Burton’s ground

West Ham fans protest against the board with chants and a plane flying a banner over Burton’s ground on Saturday afternoon.

Henry Winter wrote: “West Ham fans continue their protest against the board with something “peaceful and special” planned before today’s 12.15 kick-off of their #FACup tie at Burton Albion. Fans also to hold up red cards after minute 15 (years of board). Hugely important Fan Advisory Board meeting with Karren Brady on February 26 to air fans’ many concerns over ticketing, stadium, direction of club, ambition etc. #WHU”

A commentator on TNT Sports said: “Now we were told to expect that there would be a plane going over the stadium. A peaceful and special protest had been promised by West Ham supporters ahead of this today.

“And that protest, as you’d see, is against their board. The red card’s being held up there in correlation with the fact that the board has been in position for 15 years.

“I know there is going to be a fan advisory board meeting with Karren Brady scheduled for the end of February, where fans are going to put across their concerns.

“But we’ve got a broken net and a plane with a protest banner flying overhead, and we haven’t even kicked off yet.”

Nick Mashiter (BBC Sport football news reporter at the Pirelli Stadium): “A plane is flying over the Pirelli Stadium with a banner reading ‘Sullivan and Brady out’ as West Ham fans make their feelings clear to the Hammers hierarchy.”

Rob Green (former goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live): “The [West Ham] owners have banned banners inside the London Stadium so you are not allowed to voice your protests in terms of signage or anything like that at the ground. The fans have been innovative.

“Their concerns are still going on but what they can do is support the team on the pitch and they have good reason at the minute because they have good momentum.

Hammers United tweeted: “As they play Queen over the PA at Burton Albion. At 12.05pm consider this 👇🏼👇🏾👇🏼👇🏾👇🏼

Is this the real life?
Is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide,
no escape from reality….
Open your eyes, look up to the skies and see
#NoMoreBS”

Before the game, West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo said to TNT about the 10 changes to his starting line-up: “I don’t see there’s a risk, I see a good opportunity and chance for players that are not usually starting games to have minutes, to enjoy the game and go through the round – that is what we want.”

On if the Premier League is West Ham’s priority: “No not at all. We respect the FA Cup. Let’s see. If we go through today then we wait and see how far we can go. Our priority is always the next game.”

On the third-round win helping kickstart the Hammers’ good run of form: “Good performances and results help a lot in terms of work and atmosphere. We hope that continues today.”

On if there is a different pressure to today’s game: “It’s the FA Cup – anything can happen. We have to make sure we are ready to compete well.”

The game saw Burton take West Ham to extra time, but Crysencio Summerville got the only goal to see the Hammers avoid an embarrassing exit, though they ended the game with 10 men having had Freddie Potts sent off for a reckless tackle.

Here’s the social media reaction as West Ham fans protest against the board with a plane flying a banner over Burton’s ground…

@keiplays_: Oh I love this fanbase 😭😭🙏🏼🙏🏼⚒️⚒️

@HaydenWard_: Gwannn the lads ⚒️

@RyanTlksFooty: Thats fucking amazing 🤣🤣

@BaileyS200210: People have too much money

@hammersmikey: Fed up with commentators telling loyal West Ham fans … who get behind the team & hate the board to … get behind the team … wake up & understand

@WestHamSocial: Glenn Hoddle is the epitome of the out-of-touch media opinion, telling West Ham fans to get behind the team instead of protesting. He just doesn’t get it, does he. We are behind the team. Always have been. Always will be. But we want the board gone. Both things can exist at the same time.

@stakepoolagency: Fantastic work lads #NoMoreBS #COYI

@johnbarrett75: Love the banner flying across the ground #NoMoreBS

@thebmstand: brilliant stuff but don’t worry, it’s just a few disgruntled fans

@JamieHoskins15: Thanks for reporting Henry 👍🏻 Tues night proved what a fanbase we really are, backed the players from start to finish who in return are showing heart & fight for their Prem lives. You can feel the unity with fans, players & Nuno. This is in spite of the board

@MileEnd0103: They won’t listen, they never do. Peaceful protests seemingly have little effect, so perhaps it’s time for not so peaceful protests. If the fans can’t remove Sullivan then maybe the Met can, I’m sure you know exactly what I’m referring to, even if you can’t print it. #NoMoreBS
