West Brom’s Andi Weimann gives it large to Birmingham fans after scoring late winner

West Brom’s Andi Weimann gives it large to Birmingham fans after a scoring late winner to win the local derby on Saturday afternoon.

A video has surfaced showing Andreas Weimann celebrating in front of the away end after the match concluded, with the Baggies climbing to 5th in the Championship table, with 38 points from 29 games, while Birmingham are 19th with 32 points.

The footage was shared via Twitter by a Baggies fan, showing the 32-year-old clapping in the direction of Blues fans and gesturing the 1-0 score with his hands after the match concluded, resulting in a confrontation between both teams.

Weimann, scored the decisive goal in the 85th minute during his first appearance at The Hawthorns since joining on loan from Bristol City in the January transfer window.

Andi said after the game, via wba.co.uk: “I absolutely loved that moment.

“It was nice coming on, making my home debut and getting the winner.

“When I came on, there were a few songs coming my way from the away end, but I got the winner and had the last laugh today.

“The manager has always said we always need one across the front post. I saw Darnell get in down the right and the run was instinct.

“It was a perfect cross. I just stuck my leg out and thankfully it went in the net.

“I’ve always felt that I was quite a good finisher throughout my career. I won’t score every chance, but I feel confident in front of goal.

“Those finishes like the one today, I live off those finishes. Getting across the front of the goal and finishing first time.

“Birmingham might feel a little frustrated with the result. They hit the post from a corner in the second half, but it was a tight game overall and there wasn’t much in it.

“That’s the Championship though. You get one chance and if you take it, you win the game. We move on, we’ve won 1-0 and that’s all that matters today.

“There are so many games in the Championship, it’s absolutely relentless. With that in mind, having good options off the bench is good for the manager, but also good for the squad.

“There was fresh energy coming on to run at tired defenders today and it worked for us. Long may it continue.”

West Brom boss Carlos Corberan said, as per the club website: “Fortunately, everything with my wife and my son is very, very good. Everything has gone well.

“Dario, the new member of the family, understood the importance of that game. He wanted to watch and that’s why he came out quickly. He wanted to help us.

“I am very proud, because from the personal perspective, it’s a really important thing.

“The last week has been a demanding week. First of all we put a lot of motivation into preparing the game against Wolves. We knew how important that game was for our fans. Unfortunately we didn’t receive the result we wanted to achieve.

“After, the last week of the market is always important. You need to adapt to the changes of the situation, because something can always happen. You have to be ready to work to solve situations.

“We were also preparing for a game which we knew would be really important and really tough. Another derby in our stadium.

“Birmingham have very good players and they are playing very good football too.

“Of course, when you arrive to the game and it’s the day that you expect to have a new member of the family, you are not going to get the rest that you would like to have.

“It’s something very nice to have though and it’s been a good end to the week.

“It’s the perfect day. It’s true, the personal aspect has been very positive and the game has been positive too.

“In the Championship, you’re not always going to win three points having being much better than the opponent. You need to be able to win, even when the game is balanced.

“You can achieve this when your level of resilience, maturity and confidence is there. The players showed these values today. That’s why I’m pleased with the result that we have achieved today.”

Tony Mowbray said to BluesTV post-match: “I thought there were a lot of positives in the performance, we made life really difficult for them. With their home record, which is exceptional this season, we more than dented their play really. I think we gave them plenty of problems, we frustrated them. It didn’t feel as though Neil was making a lot of saves.

“So, a frustrating day for us really. Frustrating because if you put it back to back with the performance and the opportunities we had at Leicester last week, that is two games we haven’t scored a goal. We have to be more clinical, more ruthless.”

“I thought it was right to start Alex (Prtichard) today. Tough on JJ (Jordan James) because he has done well over recent weeks, but he is a young boy and he has to sometimes sit on the bench and watch and see a different type of player playing.

“Alex, his calf was tightening up at half-time and we needed to make sure we didn’t have an injury and a tight calf becomes a torn calf and we miss him for weeks and weeks”.
