West Brom end woeful away run after scoring 95th minute equaliser at Derby

West Brom end their woeful away run after scoring a 95th minute equaliser at Derby in the Championship on Friday night.

Patrick Agyemang had poked the Rams in front after an error from West Brom keeper O’Leary, but then Chris Mepham headed the ball just across the line to make it 1-1.

After 10 straight losses and 114 days of waiting, the Baggies pick up a much needed point, remaining 19th with 32 points, 4 points above the drop zone. Derby blow the chance to move into the play-off spots for the first time since August 2019.

Malcolm Christie (Former Derby striker on BBC Radio Derby): “I understand that these decisions are so difficult for officials but that was a goal kick and not a corner. A judgement call was made and look, ultimately Derby still need to defend the corner, but it is an absolute sickener.

You have got to be able to defend with you lives at that stage. I know the decision for the corner was more than dubious, but we didn’t do enough to win the game.

That first half, we never got out of first gear and in the second half, there really was not a lot in it.

West Brom boss Eric Ramsay speaking to Sky Sports:

“It was so important that we showed that resilience and togetherness as a group because it’s been a really tricky week.

“You can tell I’ve lost my voice from a very tricky week but we’ve talked a lot about response, we talked a lot about responsibility and making sure that we stare this very difficult challenge right in the face. And we did that tonight.

“It was a very controlled performance. It wasn’t the cleanest performance but it was exactly what tonight needed and I’m really pleased that we’re able to pick some momentum up and it gives us a real foundation to move forward.”

Ramsay told BBC Radio WM:

“We ultimately deserved what we got. I felt it was a controlled performance and the exact performance we needed tonight.

“It wasn’t spectacular, but it put right a lot of the wrongs from the previous game.

“We wanted control defensively and we restricted the opposition, were very strong in that department, and carried our own threat.

“I can see very clearly how this team will and needs to be competitive, and that was the start point.”

Derby County boss John Eustace told BBC Radio Derby:

“It’s really disappointing to concede in the last minute, I thought the lads battled and worked their socks off tonight.

“Obviously, it’s been a really difficult week and to get seven points out of the week is pleasing. But to be two minutes off getting nine points is of course disappointing.

“We also have to put things into context and I don’t think we played particularly well tonight. We looked very leggy, we were up against a really difficult team who sat in and made it difficult for us to play. And that is probably where we needed that little bit more sharpness.

“Still, we found a way to score and in the second half we did look like a threat on the transition on a couple of occasions.

“The efforts the boys have put in for these past three games this week has been sensational, and unfortunately we just couldn’t see it through in the end.”

West Brom goalscorer Chris Mepham speaking to Sky Sports:

“To be honest, I didn’t even know if it went in. At the time I was just praying. But luckily I saw the ref look at his watch and he gave it.

“It’s nice to be on the other end of a result like that tonight.”

On this result being for the fans:Ā “Yeah, 100%. I was on the sideline for most of the game and you can feel the energy from the away end.

“I think between now and the end of the season, we’re going to need that. I know it’s been a tough watch at times but we know as a group of players, we haven’t been good enough.

“We haven’t given them loads to cheer about but you can hear them and they’ve got to be with us and trust me, the players will be fighting. We care, they do too, so hopefully we can bounce on this now.”

West Brom’s Jasyon Molumby speaking to Sky Sports:

“We have to keep going. Listen, we’ve been well below par this year for this football club.

“Individual errors have cost us this season, like tonight, it’s an individual error.

“I’ve had a few myself this season and I think the main message from tonight is we never gave up and we kept believing and we have to take that forward.”

On whether goalkeeper Max O’Leary will be relieved on debut after making an error for the Derby goal:

“Absolutely, that’s what it’s got to be now. We have to stick together and get results, especially away from home. We need to kick on now and do much better.”

Molumby on ending a run of 10 straight league defeats and avoiding equalling the worst away run in the club’s history of 11 consecutive away losses, set back in 1891.

He told Sky Sports:

“Like I said before, we’ve been well below par this season and the players have taken responsibility for that.

“A club of this size, we shouldn’t be in the position we’re in but we are.

“I’ve been here a long time and I’m passionate about the club and we need to do better and kick on now.”

“I’m sure every Derby fan would have said it was a foul, I’m sure every West Brom fan would have said it wasn’t.”

Derby County defender Danny Batth also gave his views on the decision to award a corner to West Brom, which resulted in the stoppage-time equaliser for the Baggies.

Here’s how fans reacted as West Brom end their woeful away run after scoring a 95th minute equaliser at Derby…

@KeithMansfield: Never a corner. Either a goalkick or a foul on the keeper in the run up. As well as a clear West Brom handball in the box immediately before. Not to mention the foul at the far post to score the header. Four refereeing errors to give an equaliser in the last-minute of injury time.

@Harry1998M: Overall a point was fair because we were overall poor last night. However, when you go 1-0 up against a side who offered little, you need to be seeing games out. Checked the replay & the corner which led to the goal wasn’t a corner, but 7/9 in the last 3 games is still good. #dcfc

@danielwarren88: The way West Brom were celebrating you’d think they won the champions league. Conned by the ref a corner wasn’t. A foul on our keeper. The ball didn’t cross the line. Corrupt EFL officials yet again. Livid 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 #dcfc

@chris_roe78: Got what we deserved there I’m afraid. Didn’t do enough to win it. Having said that, it was never a corner that led to the goal. Bigger picture is 7 points from this week, that’s excellent #dcfc

@ashddsw: Wasn’t even a corner and was a foul on Salvesen.. but either way we wasn’t good enough today, both sides were poor. Need a result against Bristol City. #dcfc

@pantz88: Shit performance but that didn’t look like a corner right in front of us! #dcfc

@CheBaronay: How did WBA get a corner that led to their goal? I swear Zetterstrom didn’t touch the ball did he? #dcfc #dcfcfans

@Bashie1970: That goal wasn’t even a corner. Has our luck finally changed? #wba

@danwba2011: It definitely weren’t a corner for our goal but it’s about time we had a bit of luck #wba

@WBA1878: Maybe the bit of luck we were due? Wasn’t a corner and just crept over the line. Take it, hopefully a turning point, but have to get something next week. #wba

@EyaWeGew: First bit of luck for us because it wasn’t even a corner šŸ˜‚ And we’ve finally fucking scored thank god. #WBA
