Vincent Kompany criticises ‘poor’ refereeing standards; Anthony Gordon slams “ridiculous” red card

Vincent Kompany criticises ‘poor’ refereeing standards while Anthony Gordon slams the “ridiculous” red card he received on Saturday.

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany says “reflection is needed to improve the standards” of refereeing after he was sent off at Chelsea following a complaint over a decision.

Meanwhile, Anthony Gordon slammed the referee’s decision to show him a second yellow, and will now miss playing against his former club Everton.

Kompany was asked for his thoughts on the Assignon red card that ultimately led to his own red card, he replied: “Yeah. I obviously slightly disagreed with the on field decision. Yeah. Look, I think after the game it’s important to say that I did go in and see the officials to apologise about the choice of words.

“Definitely. Also, my intention was not to say at all or to suggest that an official would get in his car in the day of the game and come to the game with the intention to referee against the team.

“So it wasn’t absolutely my intention, but the frustration comes from the fact that it’s succession of mistakes and it’s always debatable.

“So when its one game and one event and it’s debatable, just like this case could be debatable, less so than other cases, I think.

“But you can always debate. But it’s the succession of it for us this season and the effects on points and the effects on our season and, you know, I suppose all of that kind of gives you almost like a feeling of it just makes you more angry when the next moment comes and I’ll have to do my best.

“I just hope it won’t happen again this season. I don’t know whether you’re thinking about it in the moment, but obviously not only are you losing Assignon for the rest of the game, but then a further ban is going to follow on top of that as well.

“Yeah, no, look, I’ll keep saying what I think know, I’m not going to shy away from it.

“I’ve said it to the referees themselves, the officials have said it, you know, to all the responsibilities that I thought, you know, refereeing hasn’t been good enough this season.

“And I have said that in, I think, a constructive way, understanding as well, the fact that it’s not easy for them, that the scrutiny is massive, the pressure is bigger than it’s ever been on the officials.

“I think the addition of VAR and obviously more opinions, more officials, doesn’t make it easy for them to do their job.

“So that’s absolutely something I take into consideration.

“But I came into this country and I think I said it as well last year. I said at the beginning of the season, for me, english refereeing was the best in the world always.

“And the reason being is because I felt it was always the league of.

“There was always common sense trying to be applied.

“You make a mistake and we all have a laugh about it.

“And usually the traditional say was always our it evens out over the course of a season, you know, and this year, I haven’t felt like this.

“Where we are in the league doesn’t really matter for me.

“It’s not in that conversation.

“It’s just when I draw back to my years of experience, either sharing the pitch with the officials and now talking to them, there’s a lack of consistency and there’s probably a little bit of reflection needed to make sure that we improve the standards again for our game.

Meanwhile, Anthony Gordon received the Player of the Match award while also receiving marching orders, earning two penalties for Newcastle and was recognised as the standout player of the game on TNT Sports’ Premier League coverage.

However, just as co-commentator Lucy Ward was announcing Gordon’s achievement, he was shown a second yellow card for time-wasting, prompting referee Rob Jones to send him off the field.

Speaking about the decision, Gordon said: “I tapped the ball away. How far you want to look into that… it’s incredible really.

“To get sent off for tapping a ball five yards. To be honest with you, I only think he booked me because he didn’t know he’d booked me before. That’s not good enough to be honest with you.”

He added: “I don’t want to complain about referees because they have a job to do. They are the rules so he’s sticking to the rules and laws of the game but it’s ridiculous really.”

Gordon wants to impress between now and the end of the season – but is now having to watch on from the stands on Tuesday night, much to his frustration: “That’s why missing a game is going to be a killer for me, I just want to keep playing,” Gordon admitted.

“I don’t want this form and this feeling to go away. It’s going to be difficult watching from the stands but like I said I’m confident in the players around me.”

Eddie Howe was disappointed to be without Gordon, saying: “That’s a huge blow for us, it sort of summed up the day really another absentee. A big blow for us, especially for him personally with the game it was but Harvey and Elliot [Anderson] have come on the pitch and done really well so at least we have players in form.”

Howe also praised Barnes after his two late goals sealed all three points, saying, “He is an incredible player,” “We have missed him this season and he would have given us quality wherever he played. He is a goalscorer and they are so valuable, and his two finishes today were of the highest quality.”

Twitter users reacted as Vincent Kompany criticises ‘poor’ refereeing standards and Anthony Gordon slams the “ridiculous” red card decision…

ON KOMPANY:

@philtheoldmod58: Don’t blame him complaining. Shocking decision. As was the 2nd Newcastle penalty. One day a referee will go to the monitor and stick with his original decision. I won’t hold my breath

@abayfieldwhu: VAR is there to decide outcome of matches. Simple as

@BangorAyeGaz: Think someone is daring the FA to charge him!

@jamiepb_32: Oh so now theres a lack of consistency is there hahaha

@RayHan665: He was fuming…. with good reason. Terrible officiating.

@chris11825: Haahahahah unlucky Megamind. “Theyre doing there best” 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤣🤣🤣🤣

ON GORDON:

@DarrenMurrish: Player gets booked for a bookable offence. Why should it matter if a player has been booked before. Perhaps if the referees reffed every game according to the laws the players would get used to it.

@gdizzle1981: He is right. It was a booking, kicking the ball away is a bookable offence now. But the ref wouldn’t have had the balls to do it, had he remembered Gordon was on a booking and therein lies the problem.

@Garysonfire: Something we’ve know for ages. Bookable offences never end up being given when a player has already been booked even though they should. Gordon is shocked cos rules that should always apply have only been applied by accident

@ianmckee58: Fuck off you little twat, you time wasted and got punished

@fin_gilmour: he ref didn’t even know he’d booked him previously, he had to be reminded. You can just tell he wouldn’t have booked him otherwise.

@Andymiles1991: Funny How Bowen had to tell the ref it was a second Yellow 👏👏

@LydiaRose0x: Incompetent referee didn’t realise he’d already been booked!
