Villa held by Burnley, Newcastle bottle lead, Forest closer to safety, Palace dent Everton’s Europe hopes

Astonburn were held by Burnley, Newcastle bottle their lead as Forest edge closer to safety, Crystal Palace dent Everton’s hopes of Europe.

It is two points dropped for Unai Emery’s side, who suffered a setback in their hopes of Champions League qualification.

Burnley to the lead just 8 minutes in, Jaidon Anthony from from a couple of yards out, and had chances soon after to doubled their lead.

Ollie Watkins thought he had got Villa on level terms on the 39th minute, but VAR ruled it out for offside. Ross Barkley did get Villa’s equaliser on 42 minutes, a header at the back post from John McGinn’s corner.

Ollie Watkins then had Villa ahead for the first time in the game on 56 minutes, only for the Clarets to hit back two minutes later, Zian Flemming with the finish following some nice play from Lesley Ugochukwu and Hannibal Mejbri.

In the closing stages, Aston Villa felt they should have had a penalty, Kyle Walker catching the back of Emiliano Buendia’s boot which also came off. No penalty from the referee with VAR in agreement.

As mentioned by @ChrisDHWaugh it is 27 points dropped from winning positions for Newcastle. Yet more frustration for the Magpies.

Harvey Barnes put Newcastle ahead with the opener on 74 minutes, but Elliot Anderson levelled against his former club to move Nottingham Forest 7 points clear of relegation zone.

More pressure on Eddie Howe, his side sit 13th with 46 points from 36 games played.

Crystal Palace twice came from behind to leave Everton coming away from Selhurst Park feelings disappointed.

James Tarkowski had put Everton ahead from a corner on 6 minutes before Ismaila Sarr (34′) had Palace level with a deflected finish.

Beto scores a fine goal after a strong run, but Jean-Philippe Mateta earns Palace a draw

Everton retook lead in the opening minutes of the second half thanks to a solo strike from Beto, but Jean-Philippe Mateta made it 2-2 on 77 minutes.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery, said to Sky Sports, as per BBC Sport’s live blog: “I think we deserved more but we needed to be more clinical. We were attacking more in their half than defending in ours, but we conceded three clear chances and conceded two.

“Overall we dominated and had the chances to score. It’s a good point but not enough.

“It’s very difficult to finish in the top five but at the moment we can feel so proud of what we are doing. Overall it’s something fantastic.

“We keep going forward and play against Liverpool on Friday now. We are excited for our future matches, a final in the Europa League and Manchester City – wow!”

On Ollie Watkins’ goal: “It’s another way we are practicing – a great pass from Emiliano Martinez. Ollie had a good three or four chances and he’s helping us a lot.”

Burnley interim manager Michael Jackson said to BBC MOTD: “It was a good performance. If you look at today’s group – we spoke about having belief – and they showed character.”

On goalscorer Zian Flemming: “He’s been incredible this year. He makes the maximum out of everything he gets each day and he’s on double figures now in the Premier League. But I know he’d happily swap that for us staying in the Premier League.”

On whether they are building for next season in the Championship: “It’s about that now. It’s about building on the foundations we have – we’ve had to do that before. I’m pleased for the group today that they have something to be proud of.”

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said to Sky Sports:

“It’s a decent performance but when you group everything that’s happened to us this season it’s another game that we feel we should’ve won and we haven’t. Already we’re starting to digest why we didn’t – lessons to learn, things to improve. We dominated for large periods and should’ve scored more than one and then paid the price at the end.

“The team improved as the game went on. First half was a bit of a non-event and we changed things around at half time, moved some things around and were much better in the second half. The two subs made a big impact that was good to see – but then we just have to defend better. Of course we had chances to get a second goal and we should have done and then we just didn’t defend the goal well enough at all.”

On defending the goal: “It was our decision on the pitch to go deeper as a protection mechanism but it rarely works. Disappointed with the actions for the goal – it comes from a turnover from their defensive third and we dropped deep instead of chasing the ball.”

On ending the season positively: “If we’re able to win our last two games then we’d look at it positively but we have to leave with a better feeling than we have today because ultimately the late goal changes the perception of ourselves and we put so much effort in, the lads are really trying, we’re just not putting it together for the whole game.”

Nottingham Forest boss Vitor Pereira speaking to Sky Sports:

“In the end I have reasons to be happy. Three games, very tough without time to recover and time to prepare in the proper way. Chelsea away, Villa away and today a physical game against Newcastle. It was very difficult but the players showed the spirit, the character and in the end they want to score a second goal but I have to be honest that one point, in this moment of the season, is a good point with the players that we have injured at the moment. Difficult to find solutions and the players from the bench went in with spirit to help the team and try to score and I’m very happy with that.

“The character of these players, a special group. They believe even after we conceded the goal that we can score. We did and maybe have a chance to score a second. This is the spirit I want in my team. Now it’s time to recover mentally and physically. Thanks to the supporters because they help us a lot. We’re looking to the future with belief and we know that next season will be good for us.”

Nottingham Forest goalscorer Elliot Anderson speaking to Sky Sports:

“Massive – we knew going into these last few games it’s important to pick up points and finish on a high. It’s a good point considering I don’t think we were at our best today. But when you’re not at your best it’s about not losing points and we’ve picked one good one up.

“Subs brought some energy, tough out there today. It was hot and everyone seemed really tired. A tough first half for both teams I think. But we finished well.”

Goal meant a lot? “It did – a few things going on recently so it felt really nice.

“We’ve made a U-turn and done really well. The manager is brilliant and we’re all behind him. Tough game in midweek but we’ll bounce back and now focus on the league.

“One thing the manager said is that this group is full of fighters. Four managers it’s not been easy but we’ve all stuck together and fought for each other.”

Everton manager David Moyes speaking to Match of the Day: “We did ok. We gave up some chances – the game could have been 4-4 or 5-5 at one point. We are trying to win at the moment but we missed some big chances to make it 2-0. They did as well – but we had a chance to go 2-0 and we didn’t take it. Maybe if we had got that after midweek it might have been a different game. Credit to Crystal Palace, they stuck in.”

On Beto: “He’s great at his work rate and what he tries to do. He’s limited in other aspects but you’re just beginning to see some goals. I’ll need him to score a few more between now and the end of the season.

On Europe: “It’s amazing that we are actually talking about Everton possibly being in Europe with two games to go – and we’re not out of it yet. It’s getting tougher every game we’re not winning.”

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner said to Sky Sports: “I’m more pleased with the performance, especially second half. At the end, maybe the last 30 minutes, it felt like Everton had to play 3 days ago, because we put so much pressure, we created chances. We always knew Everton can be dangerous. At the end it was one mistake we made, but I’m really proud of the team’s effort today of the belief we had and also on the mentality, not to get the draw over the goal line but to play for our win. I think it was a huge performance today.”

On conceding in both halves: “I told the players at half time, this is the difference between conference league and premier league. Conference is very technical and premier league is so physical. After the first 10 minutes we had to find the switch. In the first 10 minutes they were just in our half. It was like this against Bournemouth, with corners. We talked about it and the reaction today was much better than it was against Bournemouth. I think we played well, scored a nice goal, always were threatening. It’s psychological. The way we played the way we created chances, it was great to watch, big credit to the players.”

On the extra recovery day for the players: “The last premier league game was between the two semi finals and now there is two and half weeks to prepare for the final, it’s a little bit different. The players, even yesterday, looked much fresher and this is what they showed today, it’s not just the mentality, it’s the quality, it was incredible.”

On who he’ll be backing for West Ham v Arsenal: “I can’t say because we play city in three days, this makes them more aggressive, we are neutral. We just want to get point after point. Todays performance makes me proud and now we prepare for city. We know they are on a good run, playing so well, but all these performances will help us develop individually and as a team. Seven months ago we played at Everton, we dominated first 60 minutes but then we had a drop off and pressure increased. We lost 2-1 and today I had the feeling it was the opposite. The last 30 minutes we were more on their half, and we were the team maybe closer to win it. We have played more than 20 games since and this is just the development of the team and what we can be proud of.”
