Viewers let rip at Sam Matterface as he causes controversy

Viewers let rip at Sam Matterface as he causes controversy whilst commentating on the World Cup qualifier between Albania and England.

Harry Kane’s first-half header and Mason Mount’s lofted finish after the break means that England stay top of their group and face Poland at Wembley on Wednesday.

It comes just days after plenty of fans revealed that they are missing the voice of legend Clive Tyldesley, with Matterface replacing him as England hosted San Marino in their opening World Cup qualifier.

It was announced last year that Sam would take over as ITV’s lead commentator – a decision that left Tyldesley “upset, annoyed and baffled” after 22 years on the mic.

Back in July 2020, Tyldesley opened up about the shock news via his official Twitter account shortly after the announcement was made.

“I’m being replaced as ITV’s senior football commentator,” he said. “To be clear, this is ITV’s decision – not mine – and I am upset, annoyed, baffled.

“I’ve had broadcasters asking if I have any health issues, no I have got no health issues. I gather one or two sites are reporting that I have been sacked. Well I guess I have … from one job, but I’ve done nothing wrong.

“I’m the same person I’ve always been. Like me or hate you’re entitled to do either. Like everyone else in football I’m a matter of opinion, I totally get that. I totally respect ITV’s right to change their opinion of me.

“But, let me make it quite clear – I have not stepped down, I have been moved aside. I’m just going to miss the England games so much, even more than I’ll miss the Champions League games and that is all.”

England’s Harry Kane said post-match: “I thought it was a really good performance, Maybe a bit slow at the start but we changed our formation and I think that helped.

“Sometimes you go through spells when things don’t go your way, that is part of being a striker. You just have to stay focused and it was great to get three points.

“We need to keep working hard but we are in a good place. Poland will be the toughest game in the group but we are ready for that. If we can win that, that puts us in a great position.”

England full-back Luke Shaw: “Very happy to win on my first game back. Gareth said it before we want clean sheets and we got another. The pitch at times was difficult but we got the three points. Job done.

“Maybe a crucial time for me as I gave a couple of sloppy balls away. When you play with Kane you know he will be in that area for you to hit.

“We controlled the tempo well at times. There only chances came from mistakes to us. The pitch didn’t help but no excuses. We know we made a couple of mistakes. Gareth said after we needed to control it better. Better teams might punish us.

“The last two years I have been watching the games and regretting not having taken my chance. I am so happy to be back. I would love to be in the Euros squad. There is high competition. I will keep pushing myself.”

Viewers let rip at Sam Matterface as he causes controversy with what he had to say during the game…

@pokeefe1: ITV getting rid of Clive Tyldesly for Sam Matterface is one of life’s great mysteries.

@Dan23_92: ITV replacing Clive Tyldesley with Sam Matterface is like leaving Michelle Keegan to shack up with Katie Hopkins.

@mrleighjcooper: Anyone else put the 5 Live radio commentary on as soon as Sam Matterface started talking on #itvfootball ? Watching the game with the TV on mute. Can’t have the TV commentary #ALBENG

@CruickshankJD: Not many bigger downgrades than Clive Tyldesley to Sam Matterface

@gazbod: Hey, @itvfootball. Do us all a favour. Admit your mistake, bring back Clive Tyldesley and hook Sam Matterface. He’s making a match that’s already a struggle to watch cross a line into the unbearable. Love, all football supporters xxx #England #ALBENG

@RonanReigns: Replacing Clive Tyldesley with Sam Matterface is potentially the most errant decision to occur on ITV since Joe McElderry beat Olly Murs in The X Factor #ALBENG

@TP23Productions: Sam Matterface – “A quartet of minutes added on” Mate, WTF, just say there are 4 minutes added on! #ALBENG

@NorbertWhiteley: Don’t rate Sam Matterface as a main football commentator at all. Sounds like he’s on work experience.

@AndyBowers11: Sam Matterface is League One commentary compared to Clive Tyldesley

@GuildfordGunner: Natalie Sawyer wilfully married Sam Matterface 🤯

@Jarvalho1: Please tell #itvsport there’s time to get Clive Tyldesley back in time for the game on Wednesday? England games are boring enough without Sam Matterface

@MCraigC73: Sam Matterface: “Here comes another Mancunian”, as Lingard from Warrington replaces Foden from Stockport. Bring back Clive.

@thfcmitchell: ITV replacing Clive Tyldesly with Sam Matterface must be one of the worst decisions ever

Sam Matterface weren’t the only one getting criticised on social media as Lee Dixon was also targeted…

@coys100: Lee Dixon “ it falls to mount”. No Harry Kane passed to him 🙄

@JimmyMarkham3: Lee Dixon’s commentary is dire 😩😂⚽️

@DaggersMark: Not saying England have played well but the commentary from Sam Matterface and Lee Dixon has been a bore fest. If these two are on commentary against Poland this week i think I will give the game a miss.

@DAMO_P: Sam Matterface and Lee Dixon got to be up there with most boring commentary duo about

@DL1992_: Peter Drury and Clive Tyldesley > Sam Matterface and Lee Dixon

@PeteVillan1981: ‘A striker of his quality will put that chance down as a miss’ Harry Kane hits the bar from 4 yards out. Superb that there from Lee Dixon #ALBENG

@SteelerSpurs: So out of all the things to talk about regarding Harry Kane and the fact that he’s gunna be the premier league all time top scorer and England’s top scorer, lee Dixon is talking about his ankles not being strong enough.

@Tsarcastic_: I’d like to be a fly on the wall listening to any players from the 70s hearing Lee Dixon banging on about the state of the pitch #ALBENG

@Jordyparker23: Lee Dixon talks some shit.
