Viewers have been left in tears after Notts County let paralysed lifelong supporter Jonathan Hammocks give an emotional team talk.
The Magpies, overwhelming favourites to win the playoffs, were left so inspired by his story, that Luke Williams invited the fan to the ground and address the players ahead of Saturday’s National League clash against York City.
Be prepared to shed some tears, because this video below really puts life in perspective, and a huge well done to the club, not just for giving Jonathan something to look forward to, but by showing a touch of class with this lovely gesture.
Luke Williams: Gents, we spoke yesterday this is the man himself that I spoke to you about and he’s here he’s going to talk to you now to us, now we’re going to enjoy
JH: My name is Jonathan Hammocks, I’ve been a lifelong Notts County fan but in recent years I’ve been unable to get to the games as much as I would like to have unfortunately two years ago I had an accident fell down some stairs where I was living at the time and before I knew it I was waking up in Queen’s Medical being told by the surgeon that operates on me that I was paralysed from my neck down with very little chance of recovery, psychologically it’s I go through very tough times I’ll I try not to let one two three days go by where I’m in a real slump I tried to get out of that as best I can and sometimes a mid-week game listening to Notts can lift me, you know, like a 6-1 away win at Wealdstone, when suddenly I mean I don’t need to speak to my councillor the next day even though I still do and I’ll just talk to her about the game I went to my first match in three years against Scunthorpe up and amazingly I was introduced to Luke Williams the head coach and I’m so so grateful he said it’s guys like you that inspire us to keep playing and not take things for granted and what he’s done for me and the Ambassador there is for the club is just it’s phenomenal I’ve been given the honor by Luke Williams of doing the team talk to the players which I still can’t believe is happening I’m so grateful for
JH’s team talk: Hello everyone yeah my name’s Jonathan I would pinch myself but I can’t, because yeah two years ago I had a terrible accident and it left me uh paralysed from the neck down uh up until a year previous to that I was still playing football not at any great level I was in the National League North at the time, nah I’m joking, I turned 50 last year and football’s been you know just so connected to my life since I can remember but during my rehabilitation in the last three years I’ve used Notts County as an inspiration as well as my daughter Emma and my wife Sophie just to keep going really I mean it’s obviously been a life change incident within the space for a few seconds and uh you’ve been told this before you know about not taking anything for granted in life you know things can change you know honest expense and uh just looking forward to listening to the games on the radio and then two weeks ago I got to my first game in three years against gun thought and I got treated like royalty by the club and Luke Williams well I can’t speak highly enough of the guy and what you guys have done on the pitch this year up until now I had two favourite seasons watching Notts, and one was in the 80s one was in the 90s and in terms of what I’m talking about is in terms of football the quality of football but this year was completely surpassed it um I’ve never known a team so hungry and well it proves a point on the goals you’ve scored and the points you’ve got so um I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart really um I’m so proud to be I feel connected to the club I always have done a bit more so in the last few weeks because of what’s happened it’s just been well I’m starting to waffle on now and uh I was told to keep it brief because you lads can’t take much information in but I was told to say that I was actually paid to say that I didn’t want to say it my daughter Emma would just like to say something at the end just to round it off
Daughter Emma: You guys are all really good players but Langstaff you are my fav.
