Viewers beg for Sam Matterface to be replaced after his ‘awful’ commentary

Viewers beg for Sam Matterface to be replaced after his ‘awful’ commentary during England’s 10-0 victory out in San Marino on Monday night.

It’s fair to say the Three Lions fanbase are still rather riled up with that fact ITV thought it would be a good idea to axe Clive Tyldesley as their main commentator.

The 66 year old was replaced by Sky Sports News and talkSPORT presenter Sam Matterface in July last year, and every time there is England coverage on our TV screen, the same topic of conversation arises.

And this comes off the back of Tyldesley taking to social media following the announcement to say he was “upset, annoyed and baffled” by the move.

Back then, he said: “”I was told about three weeks ago so I have had some time to get my head around the decision, but I haven’t got my head around it. To be clear, it is ITV’s decision not mine.

“I’m upset, annoyed, baffled… I would have been entrusted with commentating the Euro 2020 final… but now I won’t be commentating on any of the big England games in the coming year and I’m going to miss them, I love this job, and it’s gone.

“Why? I don’t know, I do not know exactly why this decision has been taken… I’ve got no health issues… I’ve done nothing wrong… Like everyone else in football I’m a matter of opinion, I totally get that.

“I totally respect ITV’s right to change their opinion of me, ITV have been really good for me and yes I’ll carry on as their number two commentator but let me make it quite clear, I have not stepped down, I have been moved aside. I’ve not even thought about winding down about retirement.

“There are thousands of people in this country facing up to job losses and disappointments far more serious than this, I am a lucky boy,” Tyldesley added. “I love my work and I’ve got plenty on. So I’m not making a statement or anything like that, this is not a grave matter of state.

“I’m just telling you that I’m really, really disappointed about this, I don’t know why I’m being replaced. I’m well, I’m able, I’m available and I’m just going to miss the England games so much, even more than I’ll miss the Champions League games, and that’s all.”

Since then, Matterface has divided opinion and he had those tuning in to watch Monday’s game complaining once more after Harry Kane scored England’s third of the evening.

The goal, which broke a 113-year old record for goals by an England striker in a calendar year, saw Matterface come out with: “The way he’s going he’s going to have more records than HMV.”

After many of the things to come out out of his mouth in the past, it prompted calls for Tyldesley to be given his old job back.

In an interview earlier in 2021, Tyldesley claimed he considered “storming out” of his meeting with ITV after he was told he was being replaced as the broadcaster’s main commentator.

“I could have stormed out, but I thought, no I quite fancy commentating on France versus Italy,” Tyldesley told the Daily Telegraph.

“Once the decision has been taken you have to absorb it, realise it’s not the end of the world. It’s nice if you’re missed a little bit.

Tyldesley added: “I don’t think ITV replaced me with a younger man for the sake of that, I think they replaced me with a different kind of commentator.

“And even though I was shocked by the decision and didn’t agree with it, I can accept it, because Sam commentates in a different way.”

As mentioned, viewers beg for Sam Matterface to be replaced after his ‘awful’ commentary during the San Marino game, see what they wrote below…

@jones_itfc: I don’t think I’ve heard a worse commentator than Sam Matterface. God knows who makes the ‘appointments’ at @itvfootball and @talkSPORT.

@twelvebears: Why are @LeeDixon2 and @sammatterface such rude, disrespectful arseholes? I’m delighted England are winning but why be so completely horrible about San Marino in the process?

@Missives0fASub: Sam Matterface is a bellend isn’t he? “You wouldn’t volunteer to be a San Marino fan.” Guessing you probably would if you were from there.

@eljgales2:
“You wouldn’t think there’d be many people who would volunteer to be a San Marino fan, would you?”
Sam Matterface: bellend.

@ToweringZigic: Sam Matterface mistaking Trent Alexander-Arnold for Conor Gallagher is the best case of mistaken identity I’ve ever seen. Genuinely no idea how he’s done that

@HorneyMedia: Trotting out the usual shit about the day jobs #sanmarino players do #sammatterface

@bentrasler: Sam Matterface definitely learnt the phrase ‘micro-state’ today and is really keen to show off to everyone.

@steamedhamms: elite mentality from sam matterface and lee dixon getting annoyed at the 9th goal getting ruled out

@jimmyafc1978: Sam Matterface and Lee Dixon the most boring duo commentators in history, Give me boring Michael Owen and Boring Alan Smith any time. I think they’ve sent the San Marino players to sleep

@RickOShea54321: Is that Sam Matterface, subtly mocking a San Marino player for “working in a car dealership tomorrow”? These people with 2nd jobs is ok, actually. Do you get that, Sam?

@SteveEustice: Sam Matterface and Lee Dixon are making absolute tits of themselves in this game. A weird combination of desperate triumphalism and miserable dismissiveness. Just play it straight, enjoy the goals, ignore the score and leave crowing about records to others later. It’s not hard.

@heslop10: Someone needs to tell Sam Matterface that this is San Marino and to stop creaming his pants.

@andrewp538: Think @sammatterface is getting a bit too carried away about England scoring 10. It’s the worst defensive display since Harry Maguire lead the Man Utd back line against Liverpool the other month.

@bretwalda1958: Sam Matterface and Lee Dixon plumbing new depths of awfulness. Stealing a living.

@_tom_olivant: Is Sam Matterface on commission for every patronising line he delivers tonight or is he just a cunt

@hotspur4545: Sam Matterface needs a day off 🙈🙈

@jordandias: The only thing worse than San Marino’s performance, is the quality of Sam Matterface’s commentary. #SANENG #Qatar2022

@rogerefc: Sam Matterface is probably a lovely fella but my god as a commentator he is without doubt one of the worst.

@Joelbirmz12: Fucking hell sam matterface potent attack? We’ve played some electricians man

@ChurchieBoy1986: Sam Matterface talks a load of bollocks most potent attack we’ve had Sam Marino Albania and Andorra in our group

@mattblake94: Is it ok to say that Sam Matterface is actually a little bit bigoted? I mean, his disparaging comments about small footballing nations is actually just disgusting now tbh.

@intelligenceme2: @itvfootball Note for Sam Matterface… It’s not been a vintage year for England… It’s been a normal year, we sailed through a qualifying competition and we’ve failed at a major tournament… Same old same old if you ask me.

@StrattonZak: How long has Sam Matterface been waiting to say “Soon he’ll have more records than HMV”. Honestly, king of shit jokes that bloke.

@pacemakerfoz: @itvfootball please bring back Clive Tyldesley for England commentaries – it was a terrible mistake replacing him with Sam Matterface (simply cringeworthy)

@VanninPhotos: Sam Matterface apologising for bad language, nothing is more offensive than his dreadful commentary and that incredibly relevant HMV “joke”

@RobSummerfield1: England attempted to score a goal for every time Sam Matterface talked nonsense. They were only 93 short.

@oldy1: @sammatterface ‘I wouldn’t want to be near a italian town if Italy don’t qualify’ he says whilst commenting from San Marino a country surrounded by Italy

@sarahmufc93: Sam Matterface saying to Roy Keane about San Marino being the worst team he’s ever seen and Keano’s probably thinking lad I watch Manchester United every week.

@iandobbers: Sam Matterface is worse at his job that the San Marino players are at football.

@KieranMilward: Does Sam Matterface get paid by cliché?
