VIDEO: Wolves’ Molineux on fire ‘for two hours’ as blaze breaks out in early hours

Wolves’ Molineux was on fire ‘for two hours’ as a blaze breaks out in the early hours of Sunday morning according to reports.

Express and Star state that around 20 firefighters were sent to the stadium when the fire started in the bar area of the Billy Wright stand just before 2am this morning.

Firefighters were alerted by security at the ground when the alarms started going off and contained the flames to one room.

It has been confirmed that nobody was injured and the bar area was empty at the time.

Footage posted on social media showed smoke emerging out of the football stadium on Waterloo Road for around two hours as an automated PA message asked people to leave the area.

Andy Howard, watch manager at Wolverhampton fire station, said: “There’s been a fire in the bar area, in the kitchen.

“It was contained to the room of origin but the bar area and part of the workspace was involved in fire. Otherwise it was just smoke damage to the rest of the floor.”

Crew and police blocked off roads and parked up outside the Billy Wright stand which includes the Molineux Suite where conferences and events are held next to the reception area by Waterloo Road.

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesman said they were called at 1.56am and the first crew arrived at the scene in five minutes.

West Midlands Fire service tweeted: “At 1.56am this morning we responded to a fire at The Molineux Stadium, Wolverhampton. The first of four fire crews and 20 firefighters arrived two minutes after being mobilised. We contained the fire to a conference suite bar area. It was out by 3.40am.

“The fire is believed to have started accidentally, in an electrical appliance.”

Crews from Wolverhampton, Fallings Park, Willenhall and Bilston were all sent to Wolves’ Molineux on Waterloo Road, where the nearby street was cordoned off.

Police officers were also sent to the scene, however with no one inside where the fire took place, paramedics were not needed.

Firefighters departed the scene at 6.45am but were expected to go back and check on the situation later this morning.

Wolves had played away at Brentford on Saturday, winning the Premier League match 2-1 after a drone stopped the game in the first half.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank ended up getting sent off for squaring up to Wolves players and a sparking brawl after the final whistle.

The manager fumed after his side fell to a 2-1 defeat at home to Wolves, with Ruben Nevesโ€™ 78th-minute strike deciding the game.

Tempers were still flaring minutes after full time with opposing players clashing on the pitch.

Frank appeared to have squared up to numerous players including midfielder Joao Moutinho, who had opened the scoring.

However the Bees manager didnโ€™t stop there, losing it with the officials and was eventually shown dismissed from the field.

Wolves’ next game at Molineux will be on Saturday when they take on Norwich City in the FA Cup.

WOLVES STATEMENT:

Considerable damage has been caused by a fire impacting a hospitality suite and a number of adjacent areas in the Billy Wright Stand, at Molineux.

Thankfully, no one was hurt in the incident, which was phoned-in to the fire service by a member of the security team at 1.56am, on the morning of Sunday 23rd January.

West Midlands Fire Service were in attendance within five minutes, and crews from Wolverhampton, Fallings Park, Willenhall and Bilston tackled the fire, which started in the Sir Jack Hayward Suite bar area.

Andy Howard, watch manager at Wolverhampton fire station, said: “There’s been a fire in the bar area. It was contained to the room of origin but the bar area and part of the workspace was involved in fire. Otherwise it was just smoke damage to the rest of the floor.”

Police officers were also sent to the scene but paramedics were not needed. Firefighters left the scene at 6.45am, before coming back to Molineux later in the morning to check on the situation and assess the damage.

Wolvesโ€™ facilities, safety and security director, Steve Sutton, said: โ€œThank you to the quick and excellent work of West Midlands Fire Service for their prompt assistance in tackling the flames and getting the fire under control as quickly as possible.

โ€œIt will take some days to fully assess the damage that has been caused, however it is quite significant and will take some time to repair. Any supporter packages affected for the next game will be communicated by the relevant departments over the coming days.

โ€œThe most important thing of course, is that no one was present at the time, apart from our 24-hour security team, and no one was hurt.

โ€œWe apologise to residents in the area for the very loud alarms that went off late into the night, but hope they understand their necessity at such a critical time.โ€
