Man Utd’s Anthony Elanga gives it large to Leeds fans at the full time whistle after being pelted with coins in Sunday’s Premier League game.

The Red Devils teenager was struck by an multiple objects after Fred restored his side’s 3-2 lead in the 70th minute and celebrated near the corner flag.

Elanga was hurt by the object – which hit his head – and received medical attention, although he wasn’t substituted as a result of the incident.

The Swede was only introduced by interim manager Ralf Rangnick three minutes before, making an impressively quick impact in the game.

Elanga then made his feelings known to the Leeds faithful in the 88th minute, scoring Man Utd’s fourth goal and putting his finger to his lips.

“They have made hard work of it but eventually their class has told,” said United legend Gary Neville on commentary for Sky Sports.

On Elanga’s goal, ex-England winger Chris Waddle told BBC Radio 5 Live: “Another good goal. The standard of the goals has been brilliant.

“Fernandes with a little bit of skill, rolls it into Elanga’s path and you’d expect him to finish that.”

Man Utd and Leeds continue their fierce rivalry with tensions boiling over on the pitch, with plenty of strong tackles made throughout the afternoon – only adding to the atmosphere even more.

Nine players were booked during the game, including six for Leeds.

Discussing the rivalry between United and Leeds, Neville once said: “When we went to play at Leeds, it was brutal.

“Probably more brutal than Liverpool in some ways. The rivalry between Liverpool and United is huge, but the Leeds-Manchester United rivalry is almost like a deep hatred.

“There’s a little bit of respect between Liverpool and Manchester.

“But with Leeds, it just felt like there was a real nastiness – like they would come on the pitch if they could, it was that type of feeling.”

GOALS

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa speaking to Sky Sports: “In the first half we started well and ended well but didn’t manage to score. In the moments we lost dominance they scored.

“After we got back level we had the chance to go 3-2 up and straight way they went up and scored again. We played better trying to get back into the game than when we were trying to keep a result but something has repeated that is difficult to resolve.

“We have to defend better. We are missing Kalvin Phillips and Robin Koch was substituted and we could not count on Pascal [Struijk] in midfield because he went back into defence. Not being able to come with the three defensive midfielders we have, there is a weakness in the recovery of the ball.”

On Robin Koch possibly suffering from concussion: “He had the knock and the conclusions you are suggesting are not the same as what we have.”

On Leeds’ league position: “It is impossible not to be worried. We have conceded 50 goals. Do you think I cannot be worried? How can I not feel responsible?.”

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire speaking to Sky Sports: “We needed to start the second half better, for sure. They came out right on top of us; their first goal is obviously really lucky and it got them right back in it and then they scored a good goal. We had to fight back and stick together; we knew it was a tough place to come but we knew we had qualities and could hurt them. We said at half time we needed to score more in the second half and we managed to do that.”

On Man Utd finally scoring from a corner: “I’m embarrassed by the stat [nearly 140 corners without a goal]. I’m a big part of that set play routine but as a team we’ve been nowhere near good enough. If we scored more from set pieces we’d be higher up the table.”

On the conditions: “They were really bad. We came out at the start of the second half and tried to play the same way, but got caught in it. It was old school, I’m sure it was good to watch but thankfully we came out on top.”

“We knew that it was an important win today,” Man Utd interim boss Ralf Rangnick said after a week in which Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford publicly dismissed talk of a divided dressing room.

“It was similar to the one against West Ham. That was similarly emotional at the end with the last-second goal. But today it was more important, not only that we won the game but the way that we reacted after conceding the equaliser.

“That was the best possible answer the team could give,” he added. “It was perfect with regard to maturity, unity and the best reply that they could give to some articles last week that there was some disruption in the locker room.

“I think a game like this one today you can only win as a team and with the mentality of a team and this was, apart from the three points, the most important thing.”
