We’re just a month into the new season and we think we might have just witnessed quite possibly the worst miss of the season.
The EFL Trophy (or Leasing.com Trophy for sponsorship reasons) was in action last night and in Leyton Orient’s group tie against Southend United, James Alabi left fans perplexed.
53 minutes on the clock, Matt Harold headed a free kick towards goal, only for Alabi to get on the end of it, but somehow missed from just a yard out.

At that point in the match, his side were already 1-0 up thanks to an early goal on the 5th minute from Daniel Happe.
It came down to the 90th minute that the hosts were able to double their lead, Dale Gorman sealed the victory with a fine strike.
Speaking after the game, Orient manager Ross Embleton said, as quoted the East London & West Essex Guardian: “The message before the game was, of course, that we want to go out to win, but it was a night for me of opportunities. I think that you start the season in any cup competition like this and it tells you that if you approach things right, you never know where it can lead to.
“Although sitting down in the changing room tonight feels a distance away from where the competition ends, you never know, if you go about it in the right way, what you can achieve so it was about giving everybody a real opportunity to play in this competition this year and at the same time opportunities for everybody that hasn’t had the minutes that I’m sure they’ve been wanting on the pitch to go and put in a performance, which they did.”
After watching the horror miss from James Alabi in Leyton Orient’s EFL Trophy match last night, fans took to mock him but also state they couldn’t believe how he managed to not get the ball in the back on the net from such close range – see what they had to say on the next page.
