Fans fume after Ashley Williams ‘assaults’ Yuri Ribeiro

Fans couldn’t help but fume after seeing Ashley Williams ‘assaults’ Yuri Ribeiro in Nottingham Forest’s 1-0 win over Bristol City.

The only goal of the game was thanks to Tiago Silva from a free kick with a right footed shot into the top left corner on the 62nd minute.

The result boosts the Reds’ playoff chances, seeing them seven points clear of rivals Derby, who sit just outside the Championship playoffs. Forest are also five points behind the automatic promotion places.

It’s yet another defeat for the Robins, who have gone from being in the playoffs at Matchweek 30, to 12th nine games later, putting pressure on manager Lee Johnson, compared to Forest’s Sabri Lamouchi who has just earned a new contract.

It was with 15 minutes of the game remaining that Ashley Williams was shown the red card for violent conduct.

As can be seen above, footage has been uploaded to social media, showing Williams push Ribeiro in the face, before kicking and tripping another.

Benik Afobe wasted a massive injury-time chance to equalise, by sending a free header wide and hand Forest all three points.

Lamouchi said after the game: “Great victory and happy victory for us. I was pleased for the boys and with the clean shirt. We were not so good in the first half.

“The clean sheet was important – but the three points more. It was a great free-kick – but I’m so happy for him [Silva] to show his quality.

“We’re having a fantastic season and one point more than the last season. We have a tough game at the weekend but Bristol do too.”

This is what Johnson had to say on the red card: “That’s a big slur on the match from our point of view. I didn’t see it even though I was 20 yards from it – that’s not just manager talk – I genuinely didn’t see it.”

This is what else he had to say following the game…

The Bristol City centre-back was given his marching orders, but it left fans raging and bewildered at where he outburst came from…
