Love Island star set for move to Championship club

There are reports this week that a Love Island star is set for a career-defining move to a Championship club, with other EFL sides chasing him.

Dennon Lewis, who starred in last summer’s edition of the ITV2 reality TV show, currently plays Non League football with title winning Wealdstone.

It was on the 17th of June that the club were crowned champions of the National League South, after a majority of teams voted to base the final standings on a points-per-game basis.

But the striker could be set to climb up the leagues by signing for Championship side Charlton, who have opened talks over a £50,000 move.

According to reports, the Addicks are fighting off competition from Huddersfield, Oxford and Leyton Orient. Charlton’s head of recruitment has reportedly contacted his current club.

Sunderland had also been credited with interest, however a journalist for Sunderland Echo stated that the Mackems weren’t looking at him and have no plans to sign him.

The 23-year-old has impressed for Wealdstone, helping them win the title by scoring 14 goals and providing 11 assists.

Lewis began his career with Watford, however failed to make a first-team appearance before leaving Vicarage Road in 2018.

He dropped down the English football pyramid and had spells with Woking, Crawley, Falkirk and Bromley before joining the Stones last year.

He ended up missing the first 10 games of the season so that he could take part in Love Island. Lewis was a late arrival when he appeared in the Casa Amor villa but, despite having a good relationship with Maura Higgins, he had to leave after failing to couple up with anyone. Whilst he was only in the villa for a short time, he still made his mark on the TV show. As he left the villa shortly after entering it, he has gone straight back to his football career. This is uncommon for stars of Love Island. Normally, after leaving the show, contestants return to a significant increase in Instagram followers. This allows them to quit their previous jobs and become an influencer, working with brands to promote their products. Whilst he may not have increased his following that much, he still could have made use of an instagram hashtag generator to ensure his posts reached more people and appeared on the explore page. This would’ve given a brand more exposure, whilst also giving him more attention on the social media platform. It’s uncommon to hear of people going back to their previous job after appearing on the reality show, however, his football career may be more enticing for him.

The versatile player, who was named the club’s player of the eyar award, is able to play in defence, midfield or attack and could well provide his new side with much-needed firepower no matter what division within the EFL next season.

Lee Bowyer’s side are hoping they can remain in the Championship and currently sit four points above the relegation zone.

A sudden pick up in form since restarting the season has seen them get vital wins over Hull and QPR, lifting out of the drop zone.

Charlton are back in action on Tuesday nice when they host playoff chasing Millwall.
