Van Dijk has finger snapped by Haaland and pushes fan away during interview

Virgil Van Dijk has gone viral overnight after having his finger snapped by Erling Haaland and pushes a fan away during an interview.

The much loved Liverpool defender was far from impressed as a spectator from the stands interrupted his post-match chat with the media following the Netherlands’ 1-1 draw with Norway on Wednesday.

He then decided to shove the selfie-seeking supporter away so he could finish speaking, and boy has his got everyone talking online.

The World Cup qualifier was heavily talked up anyway, with Van Dijk going head-to-head with Erling Haaland, two of the best footballers in the world right now. It was the Borussia Dortmund frontman who his home first as he capitalised on some poor Dutch defending to give the hosts an early lead.

Davy Klaassen guided home Georginio Wijnaldum’s cross to equalise in the 36th minute. Though, Haaland was unlucky not to score a winner for Norway when he hit the woodwork in the second half.

The result meant that Louis van Gaal’s side missed out on the chance to overtake Group G leaders Turkey, who drew 2-2 at home to Montenegro.

Van Dijk also appeared to have a dislocated finger put back in place shortly after half time, before going on to play on for the rest of the game. Just makes us wince thinking about it.

“I actually snapped his finger on him,” Haaland told Norwegian station TV2 post-match.

“I do not know how it happened. He just said ‘f***ing hell, you broke my finger’.

“He’s good, so to speak,” he added. “I have no idea how I snapped his finger. That’s just the way it is.”

Speaking ahead of the game, Haaland admitted Van Dijk was the best defender he had ever come up against on the pitch.

“I do not really fear anyone, I think he is the best defender. I think quite a few others in the room agree with me on that,” Haaland said in a press conference.

“He is fast, strong and f***ing smart, and there are three important things you must have.

“I have played against him twice, I have said that he is the best I have met. He is a good player, so we have to try to play around him.”

Van Dijk, who has helped the Reds keep two clean sheets in their opening two Premier League games, has opened up on his recent route back from injury.

He told Liverpool Echo: “Very good. I am proud, a lot of hard work so far has been put in to get where I am and obviously I’ve had a lot of help from my wife and my kids.

“Obviously the thing is I have played and the first one was very emotional and very tough for many reasons.

“You visualise the game so many times in your head before you actually play so as I said to the club I was not tired because of the game – I was tired because of everything around it.

“And it was sort of like a hurdle. I had to get over that I felt like then it will come again. So that is what happened in my point of view.

“I kept training well and felt confident in my knee. What is very important is that I kept my fitness up and we kept a clean sheet.”
