Update given on John Fleck and fan in separate medical emergencies at Chesterfield v Doncaster

An update has been given on John Fleck and a fan in separate medical emergencies at Chesterfield v Doncaster on Thursday night.

Kick-off for the League Two fixture had initially been delayed by 10 minutes until 7.55pm due to a medical incident on the pitch pre-match. It was reported that John Fleck was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.

Then play halted after five minutes, with something happening in the Kop. Players were brought over to the touchline.

On 18 minutes, a fan who was receiving medical attention in the Kop was carried safely out of the stadium.

As per Derbyshire Times, John Fleck, who had been named on the bench, collapsed to the floor during the warm-up and was given medical attention before being stretched off and taken to hospital. Kick-off was delayed by 10 minutes.

Assistant manager Danny Webb said: “He had a fit of some sort. The last we saw of him he was on a stretcher leaving, conscious, speaking and with a smile on his face. We will know more tomorrow. He is in good hands. Fingers crossed he seems to be okay.

“There was a period with John on the floor in the warm-up and football goes out of your mind. Our dressing room was a very quiet place before kick-off. Us as staff tried to lift the boys and let them know that John seemed to be okay when he left. They were flat because he is a team-mate and they care about him. They went out there and got the three points for John.”

On what it was like just before kick-off, Webb said: “It was difficult because you don’t want to sort of paper over it. We thought about getting the lads back to do another mini warm-up but we decided to talk to them and let them gather their thoughts. It was such a relief to see John conscious and talking when he left. His family went with him to the hospital.

“It was hard but the lads didn’t start the game like it so fair play to the players for getting over that distressing period. It was not a nice thing to go through.”

Chris Wilder, who was informed about former Sheffield united player John Fleck, said: “Texts were coming over last night. I spoke to our doctor who spoke to the Chesterfield doctor and his agent and his family. He is okay, thankfully and he is back home and recovering.”

“It was a shock when it happened and pretty low-key. But (I am( delighted that John is on his way to making a full recovery.”

@L_wattz: what an awful night, hope the person involved is okay

@CardyFreddie: Good to see the supporter upright on the stretcher after being attended to for over 10 minutes

@katysufc: Hoping he’s okay 😔

Michael Boaler: The patient waved to the crowd as he was wheeled out so looked promising that he was ok

Keane Morley: And still didn’t stop the game. Threw a bloke out to try and get attention to the supporter and threw him out? Shocking.

Joan Harding: Hope he’s OK the guy that went on the pitch to get attention deserves a medal

Mark Evison: That town fan who went on pitch to get attention and help for the bloke had better not get banned either, absolute disgrace that he was thrown out.

Luke Searston: Mark Evison very poor stewarding tonight. Not all of them are bad I must say but not good tonight from some. From what I’ve been told the chap won’t be getting a ban and rightly so, shouldn’t have even been thrown out in my opinion. Going on the pitch is wrong yes but in those circumstances and with the ref not looking across, the chap had no other alternative
