“Never seen anything like it” Pundits react to Ollie Norburn’s red card in a game which saw Chesterfield go on to beat Notts County 3-2.
19 minutes in, with the Spireites already one up through Armando Dobra, Ollie Norburn picked up his second yellow card. A tussle with Armando Dobra, then Norburn picked up his opponent’s boot and threw it away towards the touchline.
Mark Stallard (Former Notts County striker on BBC Radio Nottingham): “I don’t think I’ve ever seen that in football.
“I’m not sure what law that breaks as Ollie Norburn throws Armando Dobra’s boot off the pitch and it’s two yellows.
“Notts are trailing and now they’re down to ten.”
Mike Dean on EFL Goal Zone on Soccer Saturday: “It’s just absolute madness. “I have never seen anything like that before, if I’m honest with you.”
Clinton Morrison said” “His boot was in the way of where he was going to run. It’s never (a red card). It’s just a laugh, come on now!”
“It’s just absolute MADNESS!” šÆ

Soon after, it was almost two for Chesterfield, with Tom Naylor at the near-post and his header comes back against the post.
On 36 minutes, a Sil Swinkels own goal got the hosts level, a breakaway led to Jodi Jones sending the ball across the penalty area towards Matthew Dennis at the far post, but Swinkels nestled it into the net instead.
Tom Naylor put Chesterfield back in front, getting a header after Tom Pearce put it into the centre and Naylor steams in to head home.
Then Matty Platt made it 2-2, Jodi Jones with a cross from the left, Matthew Dennis had his header blocked on the line, but Platt was there to scramble it in.
The game’s final goal of the game came in the 66th minute, Liam Mandeville putting Chesterfield in the lead for a third time.
Sammy Braybrooke with a ball into the box and Liam Mandeville guided his header into the far corner.
Chesterfield’s Danny Webb said, per Derbyshire Times: āYou have to give Notts County credit because they were arguably the better team with 10-men until half-time and they will say they deserved their equaliser.
āI do think it was a red card, I do think it was two silly yellows from the lad. Tom Naylor got a silly yellow card for kicking the ball away so I thought the referee was consistent.ā
Notts County manager Martin Paterson said on the sending off, per Derbyshire Times:Ā āI donāt want to discuss it. I know everyone will want me too. I feel for my supporters and I feel for my players a little bit as well but I am certainly not going to give any highlight or reference anything about match officials. It is not important, everyone will have their opinions, everyone will talk, it does not matter what my opinion is. I am not the one in charge of football games.ā
Here’s the fan reaction after Mike Dean says he has “never seen anything like it” in regards to Ollie Norburn’s red card before Chesterfield go on to beat Notts County 3-2
@returnofplym: Odd they didnt see the off the ball punch on Dennis, in the centre circle, there. Thats one of two hes had on the first half.
@craigyjones17:
Ollie Norburn of Notts County earlier.
Shown a yellow card after just 9 minutes.
āOk Ollie, donāt do anything stupid now, thereās loads of time to goā
10 minutes later . . . .
š
@cricketcelt: Only had one red card all last season and now we’ve got players doing this, imagine thinking this season isn’t miles better
@KRennicks40: Unfortunately where the game got away, made it 10x harder than it had to be. Experience player, has got to do better.
@jackdakin8: Good aim to hit the ball off the cone though, rate that
@Matt_Walker96: What an absolute doughnut
@npowell_17: Thatās one of the best red cards Iāve ever seen š
@ARLukomski: It’s good I never get my hopes up for these games. Ollie Norburn has got a lot to answer for. I admire the shithousery, but not when you’re on a yellow. I knew the man advantage would tell in the end. It was inevitable. Legs went the more the game went on. Top 3 is probs gone
@Blan27Blan: That Ollie Norburn red card is objectively just very very funny. What an absolute plonker š¤£š¤£
@gtfcartist: Fair enough thatās the funniest thing Iāve seen in a long time
@forza_notts: As good as heās been recently thatās on Norburn. Dobraās absolutely done him – surprised heās fallen for it and got sucked in as an experienced head. Tbf to chez 2nd half they used the man advantage perfectly. Probs had a decent chance of result if didnāt play 70 with 10 men.
@alexwest88: Norburn needs to issue a public apology because he is the sole reason we lost that game. Unforgivable. If I’m patto I’d be absolutely livid. Needs the book throwing at him
@josh_seward: Whichever way you look at it, it was ridiculous from Norburn to do what he did. The extra man showed in the second half. He completely cost his team today. The tucked in whopper. Dobs. š #NCFC #Spireites
@Ryannn_NCFC: No need for that whatsoever. Nobody likes dobra but come on now
@Mark_Cumbo:
Absolutely ridiculous
Two pathetic yellow cards
Cost us the game
Stupid absolutely stupid
@jacobncm: thatās the stupidest thing iāve ever seen a professional footballer do
