Up to 10 Premier League clubs want relegation scrapped

Up to 10 Premier League clubs want relegation scrapped if the 2019/20 season has to be cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Sky Sports report that the Premier League season is due to restart on the 17th of June behind closed doors and that all 20 clubs will vote on what should happen if the season has to be cancelled at Thursday’s shareholders’ meeting.

A points per game (PPG) system is recommended by top-flight officials as a way to determine the final table, say for if the country suffered a second wave of coronavirus or new lockdown rules.

A team’s points would be divided by the number of games they have played, and league placings would be based on the average number of points a team has earned per match.

One unnamed top-flight club owner says he would vote for scrapping relegation even though the Football Association ruled it out in May.

He said: “We would vote for no relegation if the season is curtailed.

“There are up to 10 clubs who think the same thing.”

If voted in favour for by at least 14 clubs, the formula would be adopted for future use.

If the simple points-per-game method was used today, Liverpool would be champions and those going down would be Bournemouth, Aston Villa and Norwich City.

EFL chairman Rick Parry has threatened legal action if there is no relegation and promotion between the Premier League and the Championship, claiming that there would be “outrage”.
