‘Unimpressed’ Thomas Tuchel calls out two England players for their performance vs Albania in a brutally honest post-match interview.
Tuchels’ first game in charge ended in a 2-0 victory for England, with Tuchel providing a candid assessment of his team’s performance.
While there was praise for goals from debutant Myles-Lewis Skelly and captain Harry Kane, Tuchel demanded Phil Foden and Marcus Rashford (both subbed off in the 74th minute) to be more impactful.
In the lead up to the game, Tuchel promised bringing back excitement after succeeding Gareth Southgate, and while the performance on Friday night was anything but, especially with Albania cautious and gave England some scares, it’ll take time for Tuchel to get it how he wants it to be.
He’ll be happy to get off to a winning start, but as mentioned, the thrills and intensity he wanted must wait for another day.

“We can do better. We have to do better” 👏

England boss Thomas Tuchel, speaking to ITV: “We can do better, we have to do better. We started well, we had seven-eight minutes with 100% ball possession with a lot of passes and high energy.
“The opponent is hard to break down as they defend in a deep block.
“In the Euros they managed to not concede chances. Second half, I felt we were too slow and in general not enough runs off the ball to get behind the line.”
On a sluggish tempo of his team’s performance: “We wanted to increase the rhythm and risk in the second half, but we were not disciplined enough in the structure. We tried to do too much individually, and it slowed our game down.
“You want to see an open match. I understand it was not the most exciting watch, but we still needed to do what was required to win.”
On Myles Lewis-Skelly: “Amazing player. Amazing personality. He came into camp and showed straight away that it’s normal to fall in love with him. It is well deserved.”
On Jude Bellingham: “No doubt he is a key player for us. Fantastic pass to assist the first goal. I expect special things from Jude. He is ready to take the responsibility and we have to create an environment and structure where we can see more of it.”
On wide positions, Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden: “We hope for more impact in these positions.
“More dribbling and more aggressive runs towards the box. In general that was missing. The chances come from the little runs behind the line.
“There was a bit missing they were not as decisive as they can be.”
Tuchel, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: “Very new experience.
“Myles Lewis-Skelly debuts with me on the pitch, so I am not all alone. He did fantastic, nothing but impressive.”
On the game: “OK-ish. Difficult opponent. I knew before it can be hard to create chances.
“They [Albania] came here to play in front of 80,000-plus at Wembley. They did everything to make life hard. We struggled to implement a high-rhythm.
“Second half, I felt we lose confidence in our structure and everyone tries it on their own and it becomes slower.
“It is more difficult to have counter-pressing.”
On wide players: “We will encourage them. We played with wide wingers because we have fantastic players. They didn’t have the influence that we expected from them. We need to make sure they have better timing with the runs.”
On fans possibly not being entertained: “You want to see an open match.
“I can understand it’s not the most exciting watch, but we still needed to do what was needed to do.
“We took more risk in the second half, but it didn’t work out the way we wanted.”
England midfielder Declan Rice, speaking to ITV: “He [Myles Lewis-Skelly] is fearless. He does everything right off the pitch and he is only 18.
“I knew he was going to play like that tonight because of the confidence he has.
“He has kept his feet on the ground and it is only the start for him.”
On Thomas Tuchel: “Only four days training together we need to keep working and getting used to what he [Thomas Tuchel] wants from us.
“To get off to a good start in the group is what we wanted.”
England debutant Myles Lewis-Skelly, speaking to ITV: “I’m lost for words. I am so grateful for the manager [Thomas Tuchel] to put trust in me. I am so happy.
“The fans made me feel at home so thank you to them.”
England’s Jude Bellingham, speaking to ITV: “Pretty good, we had clear ideas of what we wanted to do and how to play. It is difficult against a team that sits so low. Generally we stuck to the plan well, we had a really good week of training. A good win to start the new era.”
On Myles Lewis-Skelly: “When you come into the team there are a lot of lads here to help you out. We wanted to do what we could to help him enjoy it and I think he did.
On things to work on: “Keeping the rhythm, keeping the tempo. Maybe being a bit more clinical. The more we are together as a group the more we will learn.”
England Myles Lewis-Skelly debutant and goalscorer, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: “I am lost for words.
“This past six months have gone so quickly. I stay in the present and I take every moment as it comes.”
On his goal: “All I remember is staying wide and rotating with Marcus Rashford. Jude loves to stay on the half-turn. It was a great pass from him and the timing was very good.
“The finish, the keeper was coming at me, and I tried to put it between the legs.
“I didn’t even think I was going to score.”
On when he found out he would start: “I found out in the morning in the meeting and when I saw my name my heart started to pound – I was so excited.
“So many message before the game. They are all here tonight and it means the world to them.
“Honestly, it is incredible – this is a day I’ll never forget.”
Here’s how fans reacted as the ‘unimpressed’ Thomas Tuchel calls out two England players in a brutally honest post-match interview…
@clow_evan: Love that from Tuchel, even though we won he still has the balls to criticise parts of the game. Southgate would of said “the boys got the job done, I thought they played very well, the opposition made it difficult but everyone tried their best”
@MrAvalanchePoGo: It’s so strange to have a manager say what the fans are thinking, this feels me with more confidence than watching those 90 minutes
@DazDnB: I like tuchel already man just say it how it is no PR shit either he can definitely go far with this England team great start
@AllThingsBlades: God i love him already
@CFCDaily: Brutal honesty from a manager is refreshing, no lowering standards etc. Class.
@joshcraven_: respectable interview, knows what we did well and what we can improve. completely right about the wingers, and i’m glad he wants to give them the freedom to make attacking dribbles to create more goal scoring opportunities. early days ofcourse in the tuchel era but im excited
@Alexdwyer123: Weird hearing an England manager say it as it is. Spot on, rashford and foden did next to nothing. This England squad has so much more to give
@HazzaTWood96: So refreshing to hear this, I really hope we will see better from the players going forward. 🏴👍🏻 #England
@lukestone11: No sugar coating, objective, talks sense. So refreshing. If he cannot win England a trophy no one can.
@GaryAPrince: Spot on, there’s a few players he played tonight that he wanted to see and they haven’t performed, he won’t tolerate them for long.
@HarryRush15: Finally some honesty instead of sucking up to the players out of fear of upsetting them
@norwood_szn: So refreshing to see. This man is the one
@DanWilliams_9: Hearing a manager say ‘ the wingers didn’t take anyone on, and just passed it inside ‘ is so refreshing 🙌🏽
@mickeyb6: Spoke well, time to give this man a chance
@steveweth1: Good interview that very honest 🏴
@BennySLV: That’s what we want to hear. Not someone who brushes issues under the carpet and makes excuses (i.e.) @GarethSouthgate and others before him).
