Uefa urged to look into treatment of Arsenal fans by ‘aggressive’ Lisbon police

Uefa urged to look into treatment of Arsenal fans by ‘aggressive’ Lisbon police before and after the Champions League fixture.

A video has emerged on social media following the quarter final first leg game away at Sporting, showing police hitting Arsenal fans.

afcgooner (@AFCGLOO) uploaded the clip, captioning it: “Sums it all up really. European policing is atrocious, attacking fans just trying to get in the metro. Scum.”

Journalist Henry Winter wrote: “Uefa needs to look into the treatment of Arsenal fans by some over-zealous and aggressive Lisbon police before and after the game with Sporting. @UEFA #AFC”

As reported by BBC Sport, the game saw Arsenal come away with a 1-0 victory, thanks to Kai Havertz with a stoppage-time winner. The crossbar was struck following chances by both Maxi Araujo for Sporting in the first half and Noni Madueke, direct from corner for Arsenal Martin Zubimendi also saw his goal ruled out for offside in the second half.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, speaking to Amazon Prime: “Very happy to win away from homer in the quarter-finals of the Champions League against a team that have not lost at home for I don’t know how long. I think the last time was probably in Europe as well, that shows the difficult of it.”

On whether he thought his side might not score tonight: “Yes, because when we got into the final third and we sat there we missed the final bit. We had to be a little bit crisper, faster, more efficient to break them down when they had that block. We had a goal disallowed and there were two or three occasions where we were close but we lacked that final pass. In the end a magic moment from the finishers win us the game.”

On what he thought of the winning moment: “Beautiful and that’s the impact you need when you get to this stage of the season. Everybody has to make an impact and they certainly did that tonight.”

On David Raya’s performance: “He had two moments where he made two big saves. And that’s the Champions League, the Champions League is always decided in the boxes and because there’s so much quality here.”

On Kai Havertz calling him the best goalkeeper in the world: “At the moment he’s phenomenal and extraordinary since he joined us. We are very lucky to have him.”

Here’s the social media reaction, with Uefa urged to look into the treatment of Arsenal fans by ‘aggressive’ Lisbon police…

@TheShireGunner: No one causing any trouble so why attack Arsenal fan’s when unprovoked? @Arsenal @UEFAcom sort this shit out!!

@McHighbury: They held us back in the stadium for 30 minutes and escorted us to the Metro station. They were itching for a fight but the Arsenal fans didn’t react. So as they released us, they piled in using batons for absolutely no reason. Cowards.

@MattBatchelor6: Me in the white getting hit unprovoked. Unnecessary, cowardly & uncalled for. No trouble all night. Penned in & walked to the station like cattle. Police looking for a reason to escalate all night. No badge numbers. Faces all covered. Atrocious. @ArsenalMatchday @UEFA @Arsenal

@GoonerBlock: This was only half of it, loads just before that

@BellerinFC: Jesus christ, I had just managed to get through past these absolute brainless dogs. How is that the met is the best behaved police force in Europe? Would love to see Ceferin or Marchetti go to a european away with us.

@timstillman_: Yeah policing around the game was a disgrace, frankly. Absolutely no need for it, not a sign of trouble and these charged up meatheads with batons eyeballing everyone and being aggressive. Just happens so often on European aways and UEFA do not give a single shit. En route to the ground I went to throw rubbish in a bin but the bin was ever so slightly behind the police line so I got followed by a mask and shield wielding busy body. Utterly pointless. An incident where multiple fans get hurt is utterly inevitable. When Ceferin and his ilk come out with mealy mouthed nonsense in the aftermath (or, more likely, blame the fans themselves) give it the short shrift it deserves.

@ThepersonalRAW: @AFSCLondon @Arsenal I hope the club is following up with a complaint

@ArsenalInjuries: Absolutely disgusting. @uefa @championsleague are you looking at this unacceptable behaviour?

@Jonnyarsenal: @ukinportugal @LisaBandari Please watch this. The treatment of football fans simply entering a metro station is unacceptable in 2026. We aren’t cattle!

@nicktowler: It’s completely unprovoked. Disgusting from the Portuguese police. But everyone who has travelled to Euro away games has witnessed scenes like this. It will get swept under the carpet like it always does im afraid.

@MLArsenal: They were fucking wankers, pumped up and waiting to attack fans for no reason while we were being escorted to the station. Even if you weren’t going to the station, they said that’s where you had to go. The only way to ID them was the number and colour on the back of the helmet.

@AngusMoorat: Arsenal now need to make a formal complaint to the policing authorities in Lisbon and to UEFA.

@TonyUdall1: We have visited Lisbon many times recently. This is the first time I have seen it. Stormtroopers ready to hit, push and generally be aggressive for no reason. Arsenal fans are some of the easiest fans to police in Europe but the Police totally overreacted.

@eddrazzell: They were genuinely awful. Said elsewhere but there’s zero need for them to be in balaclavas, no identifiable numbers, and riot gear. We’re some of the most peaceful fans in europe. Poor policing a few weeks ago in Milan too

@fplTrangPak: Real Betis are also making a formal complaint how Portuguese police treated their fans at Braga this week too
