UEFA makes U-turn on banning social media videos of The Killers’ England celebrations after backlash

UEFA makes a U-turn on banning social media videos of The Killers’ epic England celebrations after receiving backlash.

UEFA, along with Twitter and Instagram, decided to remove videos recorded by those who captured the moment The Killers took a moment to stop the music, and instead turn their focus to the big screen, which showed the end of England’s 2-1 Euros semi final win over the Netherlands.

A confetti cannon went off to celebrate the Three Lions making the Euros final, where they will play Spain on Sunday, and then the screen went off and the band began playing the much loved hit song ‘Mr Brightside’.

It was quite the extraordinary moment of football and music coming together. So it’s no wonder that everyone captured it on their phone as something special to remember.

As you can imagine, a lot of videos of it were subsequently uploaded to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, but it seems the last two decided to remove the gone viral videos, leaving many reeling when they took action just a few hours after the final whistle, and come morning the next day.

Many found their footage removed, and their accounts receive a temporary ban or even as far as the risk of permanent suspension.

Nikki Wicks (@nikkiwicks) was one person who uploaded a video, getting 4 million views and 41,000 likes. Only to then find it had been removed.

Tom Wells (@TomWellsLSF) also saw his clip suffer the same fate. He said: “So @UEFA / @EURO2024 are the biggest joke of an organisation. Hitting me with DMCA takedown notices because 25 seconds of #ENGNED was in the background of the video I posted of the incredible moment of The Killers celebrating England’s win tonight! UEFA hates @thekillers.”

This was their formal takedown notice…

UEFA’s notice stated: “As you have not sought or obtained permission from UEFA to use this content, your current use constitutes an infringement of UEFA’s rights.”

However, after just less than 24 hour, UEFA has performed a U-turn following backlash and being contacted by media and news websites.

They claimed that its content protection teams mistakenly identified the video.

A spokesperson told Cybernews when contacted: “Kindly note that UEFA has a strong content protection programme to combat the unauthorised distribution of its content. In this instance, it appears that the relevant content was wrongly picked up by our content protection teams and so we are currently taking steps to withdraw the relevant notices.”

Common sense prevails, the videos are back online for all to watch, as it should be, any bans are being overturned, and users are no longer locked out of their social media accounts.

Seems like a lot of needless bother that could have been prevented. Fans living in the moment, and this was all to benefit UEFA and their competition even more. Yet they still found an issue with it.

Twitter users reacted as UEFA makes a U-turn on banning social media videos of The Killers’ England celebrations after the online backlash…

@davecauvin: How unbelievably ridiculous…they’ll be busy today then as footage from last nights show is everywhere on here! And it’s brilliant!! @EURO2024 get over yourselves…

@robgriffin68: What a joke! Pathetic sensorship

@kapowaz: UEFA nuking everyone’s videos celebrating the end of the England match, including all those at The Killers concert: absolute killjoys

@killershistory: Well, a copywrite infringement threat from UEFA was not how I imagined starting the day. Watching England win and then The Killers go straight into Mr Brightside was something special last night, but you’ll have to imagine it cos I’m not allowed to show you 😂

@mayday_36:
Regular People: I will share this video of this happy moment so we can collectively experience it, thus providing good advertising your product to thousands of people for free.
Sports leagues: 😡

@Ziggi92: This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things

@squid_win_: 3 years ago my professor in post-production said to the class that all the videos that were made in YouTube in the late 2000s would be taken down because of copyright. Copyright ruins creativity and things like this ruin the moments happening in the world. Truly shameful.

@bigfanofLFC: Football authorities bemoan the supposed lack of people watching the game then deny everyone access to watch

@thatchamdad: I get that it’s technically a rights violation and the lawyers will say it’s necessary to draw a hard line, but it’s hard to escape the conclusion that to UEFA joy comes a distant second to 💶💶💶

@GraceOnFootball: The dumbest organisation in the world when it comes to social media videos. The number of big Champions League moments that are almost impossible to share because everything is geoblocked.

@pauldsmyth: Seriously, @UEFA absolute parasites are taking down videos all over the internet of @thekillers showing the final whistle from #ENGNET semi-final then bursting into Mr Brightside. They do very little for football, they just take in the money & line their greedy pockets. #FuckUEFA

@rebzeleanor: Imagine a moment like that, where everyone is celebrating England making it to the Euros final at the o2 followed by the Killers playing Mr Brightside LIVE and wanky @uefa get it removed from the internet so we can no longer watch it. Pricks

@amandab_UK: UEFA coming after people with legal notices requesting removal of footage from the @thekillers gig? Chill out ffs! 🙄😂

@KaatyyyG: UEFA banning the videos of the killers playing the last few minutes of the England match, the booting off with Mr Brightside is fucking pathetic.

@Pecks1992: Someone at @UEFA has too much time on their hands

@LloydMCBriz: I think we can all universally agree that UEFA taking down those videos of Ollie Watkins’s assist to Mr Brighside at the Killers gig is a joke. Scummy corporate killjoys. #ItsComingHome

@Lokster71: @UEFA claiming copyright on the videos from The Killers concert is a perfect example of how the people who run football piss on all joy in the name of tiny amounts of income.

@gemmaraggett: Oh come on @uefa it was hardly the whole match ffs 🙄 I hope the killers refuse to play at any future uefa event. In fact ban the lot from future gigs too.

@featherfusions: It’s ridiculous! I thank you for sharing the joy with us. @UEFAcom are being absolutely ridiculous.
