Two goals in final three minutes sees Crewe seal comeback against Salford with fans invading pitch

Two goals in the final three minutes sees Crewe Alexandra seal an epic comeback against Salford City with fans invading the pitch.

Dan Agyei stunned playoff hopefuls Salford by scoring a last-minute winner, after Crewe scored two late goals to win a 4-3 victory in League Two.

Salford had been 3-2 in front with five minutes left on the clockl after Stephen Mallan found the net.

However, Connor O’Riordan got a leveller for the hosts in 88th minute wth Agyei winning the match in the 90th.

The Ammies put in a strong start, with Luke Bolton setting up Louie Barry to get the first goal in the 19th minute.

The Railwaymen equalised when Agyei converted on the spot on the 31st minutes.

Joel Tabiner’s audacious finishing made it 2-1 Crewe, the youngster grabbing on to a loose ball from 25 yards away and lofted it over the stranded goalkeeper.

Callum Hendy scored a stunning finish with the ball in the far corner to get Salford level again.

Substitute Mallan looked as if he had won the match with a low drive within the last five minutes.

Crewe fought back however. O’Riordan with a back heel levelled the game again before Agyei reached the bottom corner.

Crewe boss Lee Bell said, as per Cheshire Live: “It is hard to sum it up right now. I thought it was a really good game of football, two good teams trying to play the right way on that pitch. I am delighted for the players, fans, staff, everybody to get that win against a really good team. I don’t think anybody can take that away from us really.

“There were spells where both teams had plenty of possession and opportunities to score more goals. But what the players are building in terms of robustness, after things that have gone against them in the last few weeks, they have put that into practice in terms of getting the result.

“We asked the players to be brave and I thought they were really excellent. There were so many standout players.”

Asked what he had been thinking at half time, Bell said: “I thought there would be chances in the game again, probably for both teams, it was just inevitable the way he game was going. It was disappointing to concede that goal but they are a quality team. The first goal, they have an F1 dribbling down the side of the pitch, he was that quick! But after that I thought Rio did excellently, he got his angles and distances right.”

Bell, whose side are at Stevenage on Tuesday, added: “It is really pleasing, we could see the things we have been working on. A couple of weeks ago we were breaking these fixtures down into fives and we said we were going to meet these teams head on. I thought we coped with everything Sutton had to throw at us and did better at their game than they did but circumstances meant we didn’t get the three points.

“We weren’t going to sit back tonight, tactics came into it but fair play to the players. They took hold of that message. The players and the fans have deserved it but we will be working hard again on Stevenage.”

The manager celebrated with the crowd when Agyei struck the late winner. He said: “We have been so close to winning matches. People are probably sick to death of hearing it.

“Listen, we have won one football match. We quickly move on, let the players and fans enjoy it and then we will be thinking about Stevenage,

“But I certainly enjoyed it when that goal went in – I apologise to whoever’s son I picked up!”

“All four of Crewe’s goals were all down to our poor play and our mistakes – they were shocking goals for schoolboys,” said Salford manager Neil Wood, as per NewsChainOnline.

“We didn’t do the right thing for the team, that’s why we failed tonight. For some reason we wanted to show the crowd where players should put the team first.

“We probably played on a difficult pitch for most of the game and took a 1-0 lead but then gave a poor penalty. Then we wanted to play from behind for the second time and it was a terrible mistake and we were down 1-2.

“Stevie came on and scored a great goal and with a 3-2 lead you expect them to manage the game and let the minutes fade but we got caught again. We made the wrong decision after a corner and the kid hacked in and for the fourth goal we were penalized for touching too much.

“We would have been in a great position tonight if we had won but we need to move on and prepare for Doncaster next week.”
