Twitter users have decided to fume at Gary Neville’s tweet on fans booing the national anthem, and he certainly expected this anger.
It’s a topic that has really been thrown into debate towards the latter stages of Euro 2020, especially after the Football Association released a statement after fans not to do so.
Booing the national anthem was something supporters did at Wembley ahead of the game against Denmark, with the English FA facing a fine as punishment.
Not a single England fan around me was booing during Danish national anthem, and lots clapped respectfully.
But if 5.000 boo while 55,000 dont, you will hear the boos. pic.twitter.com/yUgWPlWLrC

An England fan also shone a laser light at the eyes of Kasper Schmeichel, something which has been widely condemned despite the spot kick being saved before Harry Kane hit the rebound.
A statement read: “Disciplinary proceedings have been opened following the UEFA EURO 2020 semi-final match between England and Denmark (2-1), played on 7 July at Wembley Stadium, London.
“The case will be dealt with by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) in due course.”

The FA say: “Whether you are at Wembley Stadium, or watching from somewhere else, please support England in the right way, before, during and after the match,” the email reads. “This includes respecting each national anthem and the players’ choice to take the knee before kick-off.
“We want you to be able to watch the match in a safe and enjoyable environment that’s free from any discriminatory or disrespectful behaviour.”
Gary Neville wrote on Friday morning: “When I played in the different countries and our NA was booed I always took it as the opposition fans trying to unsettle us, drown our fans out and never as some kind of attack on us as people.Same when we did it other teams. Is it really that bad and disrespectful? Incoming 🔥😂

Gary Lineker has also gone viral for what he said on the matter: “If you’re lucky enough to get a ticket for the final, please, please don’t boo the Italian anthem. A/ It’s an absolute belter and worth listening to. B/ It’s bloody rude, disrespectful and utterly classless.”
Simon Jordan lambasted England fans on talkSPORT after the Germany game as he made a controversial view on booing the opposition side’s national anthem.
He said: “It disappointed me because it makes us [England fans] look like Luddites!
It makes us look like absurd, ignorant, stupid, arrogant and single-minded people that have the necessity to boo the German national anthem.
“The Scots with the greatest respect in the world, you guys boo everything we do, I watched the social media pile-on, we’re going to do this and that they can’t wait for us to fail, and it should happen either.
“But I was disappointed because it makes football fans, or a segment of football fans, not all of them because we can’t put them in the same category, ignorant, stupid, arrogant and one dimensional, and it makes people dislike you.”
“Dislike us because our team is really good, dislike us because we have the best domestic league (Premier League) and the most money. Don’t dislike us because of our fans are myopic and ignorant on there outlook.
“We don’t have to boo the German national anthem, what is the point of it?
“I don’t get, I get the tribalism, I’ve sat in football stadiums with 25,000 fans have told me my name for 90 minutes of a game, and it begins with F-ing something, and you get it and take it and enjoy the banter, most football songs are steeped in some ridicule or parody of unkindness and I laugh at all that, but there is a need to just have a bit of elegance and style and a plom about it and I don’t mean sophisticated like some cad of bounder, I mean, at a football match, cheer the team, why boo the national anthem, why, I can’t imagine it. What’s the point of it?”
As mentioned, some Twitter users fume particularly at Gary Neville’s tweet on fans booing the national anthem, whilst there were others who defended the former Premier League player…
It’s the lack of class. Can’t see anyway around it.

@bellasorella122: Other nations do it to us so why shouldn’t we do it to them. The world hates England and just want any excuse to use it against us.
@TouheyMark: Here’s a question.. Have you any idea why the world hates England?
@felicefan: It’s disrespectful, yes. I’m not religious, but I’m not turning up at a wedding and booing the vicar. People need to have more class, but half our country have none unfortunately.
@UtdCathal: It’s disrespectful for anybody to do it
@JDKaile: Almost every other sport has managed to avoid booing of anthems and they haven’t lost the competitive edge or atmosphere. I do think it’s disrespectful and unnecessary. It reflects badly on us all. Let the football and positive energy towards our players do the talking.
@SteBest82: I think it’s disgusting, we should take the time to learn and sing each others national anthems along with the opponents and cheer when they score. We’re all human beans at the end of the day.
@BlauerTHFC: The Italians booed the Spanish anthem but obviously no one will talk about that
@craigmurdoch11: No, it’s not bad OR disrespectful. Cause it’s England doing it. Just like diving isn’t cheating or embarrassing anymore. Cause it’s England doing it. Apply this to any other view you’ve previously held as well, Gary.
@MarkkCampion: Yes, it is disrespectful. You can boo the opposition the whole way through the match but have respect before kick off.
@Glenn_Donnelly: As a football fan, take all your points and agree with them however next time you’re on commentary duty, talk about the teams, formations and selection choices when NA’s are being played. It’s not done. So to answer your question, is it bad and disrespectful, IMO, yes it is.
@paulshaw81uk: I think it’s disrespectful for sure, I think there are better times to boo and rattle the team. That said, I also think playing the Anthem before games is absolutely pointless and should be scrapped too
@TomBenson_95: I don’t think it’s particularly horrific, but I’d also prefer it if we didn’t do it. It comes across as incredibly small time and tacky. I think we can do better.
@MyUnited2: Did it ever work? Did you ever see anybody actually unsettled or unnerved because of the booing of their NA? Genuine question.
@Jack_Doyle82: Gary Neville actually hurts my head. What a complete and utter penis of a man
@Rebex32: I didn’t like people doing it over Denmark’s Anthem. It just didn’t sit right with me.
@nick_kershberg: I’m all for booing and jeering the opposition – it’s part of what makes football what it is. But the time for NAs before a match should be like the calm before the storm. Whether it means anything to you doesn’t matter. It’s a proud moment for many. A bit of respect doesn’t cost.
@Cantonarghhh: It is disrespectful… and that’s exactly why fans seem to do it. To use that disrespect to get under the skins and rile their opponents. It’s extremely poor sportsmanship, in poor spirit, rude and reflects badly on the perpetrators, English or otherwise. Frankly, it’s a nonsense.
@AA_utd: Only bad when England does it everyone was quite silent when Scotland booed ours or Italy booed Spain’s
@Russ10784945: Bang on Gary…… We are turning football into some made wet wipe sport….. Too many people jumping in that are clueless about our game
@makkathfc: I can see that point but personally I think it doesn’t make us look great and find it a bit disrespectful…just a bit. Fans can unsettle the Italians when the game starts
@GorseFox: Yes, it is disrespectful. This a sport and it should be characterised by sportsmanship – and that extends to the fans. I don’t care what foreign fans do… we should know better.
@FTLnoel: It maybe disrespectful but it’s just pantomime booing, surely no one seriously gets upset by it. In Rome they frequently stab the away supporters, I’d say that’s probably taking the terrace banter a bit too far. 🤣
@mainlyoasis: How can someone genuinely take offence to the opposition booing a national anthem. The fans will do anything to try and gain an advantage it really isn’t that deep
@RicardosGhost: Watch the 1966 final again. No one boos the German national anthem. And in 1966 a good lot of fans there would have fought in Europe in WWII, or had fathers, brothers, and sons who died fighting in Europe. They had more right than anyone to boo, and they didn’t. So we shouldn’t.
@Ruthwood23: I absolutely think it’s disrespectful. I love hearing the anthems being belted out though, that has to be more intimidating than a few boos.
@ben_personal: Spot on Gary
@xGJHP: No Gary! Don’t you see? We should be making all away fans a cuppa when they come to Wembley and give them a pillow and sing songs about how much we love them.
