Tributes pour out on social media after former Arsenal player Reyes dies aged 35

Former Arsenal player Jose Antonio Reyes has died in a car accident aged 35, it has been confirmed by Sevilla.

The La Liga club wrote on Twitter, “We could not offer worse news. Our beloved squad member José Antonio Reyes died in a traffic accident. Rest in peace.”

Reyes was part of the Invincibles, joining the Gunners in January 2004, and he scored a cracking goal on his debut in the FA Cup against Chelsea.

After signing for them for £15million, he went on to win the Premier League, FA Cup and Community Shield. He also became the first Spaniard to win the English title.

Reyes left to join Real Madrid on loan before heading to Atletico Madrid on a permanent deal in 2007, winning the Europa League twice with them.

In 2012, he re-joined Sevilla and then joined Espanyol, Cordoba and Xinjiang Tianshan Leopard before signing for Extremadura in January.

He had been playing for the Spanish second-tier side since January.

Extremadura paid tribute to Reyes in a tweet, saying: “With a shrunken soul and a broken heart we announced the death of Jose Antonio Reyes in a traffic accident. We pray for his soul.”
