Graeme Souness has caused controversy by stating that he believes Tottenham Hotspur have been lucky to reach the Champions League final and do not deserve to be there.
Spurs will take on Liverpool in the much anticipated finale of this season’s tournament this evening – a match which can be watched live on BT Sport or on their YouTube channel for free.
Tottenham made an incredible comeback to beat Ajax, scoring three times late on. Liverpool, Mauricio Pochettino’s opponents tonight, also turned around a 3-0 aggregate deficit to hammer Barcelona 4-0 at Anfield.
Though prior to the game, the former footballer turned pundit spoke to Virgin Sport, claiming the north London side have been very lucky to reach the final.
Graeme Souness said: “Spurs shouldn’t be there.
“You say to anyone at the start of the season this team is going to lose 19 games in all competitions and yet they’ll find themselves in the final of the Champions League you’d say you’re talking nonsense.
“But they’ve somehow got themselves there and I think they’re fortunate to be there.”
“I’m looking at it mostly through the eyes of a Liverpool supporter and I’d pose a question: ‘If you were picking a team from the 22 who will start the game, how many Spurs players would be in that 11?
“I’m thinking, as we’re standing here, Eriksen possibly into midfield.
“And Harry Kane. So you’ve got nine Liverpool players.
“But the moment you try and apply logic to football you’ve come unstuck.”
