Tranmere player apologises to fans after 2-0 defeat to Bromley and recognises drop in attendances

Tranmere player Aaron McGowan apologises to fans after a 2-0 defeat to leaders Bromley and recognises a drop in attendances.

Michael Cheek netted twice as Bromley extended their winning run to seven consecutive League Two victories and five points clear at the top. Tranmere meanwhile sit 17th.

Cheek headed them in front after just 2 minutes, Tranmere struck the post and had chances but couldn’t find that equaliser, then Cheek sealed the win in the 57th minute, pouncing on a goalkeeping error to make his 14th goal of the season with 5,930 fans that attendance inside Prenton Park.

Tranmere boss Andy Crosby said, per Wirral Globe: “Today has followed the same trend as so many games this season.

“We found ourselves behind inside 90 seconds after we turned the ball over twice inside our own half and the league’s leading scorer heads it into the net.

“So it was a disappointing start and disappointing in terms of our bravery to get on the ball in terms of the way Bromley play.

“I don’t think we showed enough bravery in the first half to bring them onto us and play through the press or to go over the press when we could.

“The game was scrappy and horrible for too long and then we went two behind in the second half due to a disappointing error.

“We then at least showed some energy and fight to get ourselves into the final third, but we weren’t effective enough to create any proper goalscoring opportunities or to work their goalkeeper.”

Interviewer: What a hugely disappointing way to start the game conceding so early, Aaron. And you really really struggle to knock them out of their stride for the rest of the 90 minutes really.

Aaron: Yeah, look, I can only apologise to the fans cause too many times we are at home not winning games, not even drawing, to be honest with you. Just loss, win one. Oh, that’ll see us through for another four. Brilliant. Yeah, leaving the top goal scorer in the league five yards out unmarked one minute in probably isn’t the best start to the game. You can’t teach it really. The lads know. But if we’re not applying it, then there’s an issue. And there is an issue. It’s called a spade a spade. There’s an issue. It’s been whatever’s gone on before I joined, but it’s been an issue all season to be honest with you. The answers are simple, but if it’s if simple, it’s simple and seems like it’s not simple. So, I don’t know. I really don’t know. I say it’s difficult for me to stand here and be anything positive because I think we had double the possession. We had double the shots and I think they deserve to win the game, show me honestly. So nowhere near good enough.

Interviewer: You look at the league table, you know, and you look at your performances, you know, it was eight wins, eight draws, eight nine defeats, I think it is now. So, I mean, does that sort of tell you that you worry are in the league and and and until you improve in all departments, you know, things ain’t going to change.

Aaron: They’re not going to change. They’re not going to change, are they? I don’t think if we go away to Bromley, you were top of the league, and I said this yesterday for a reason, because they do the basics, right? They’re well drilled. If you want to go long all day, they’re probably going to win the battle. So, you play and you got to want the ball. And, I think too many at home are just going a little bit under at the minute. I include myself in that. I’m not standing here, you know, thinking I think I need to be better in moments, but at the same time, I know what the answers are, but it’s quite simple, isn’t it? Whoever’s listening or whoever’s in this room, it’s not stupid what I’m saying. We need to stop giving silly goals away. Then you come out second half momentum. And then we had, you know, the gaffers gave us a job of on set piece because they’re the best set piece team in the league. Your man is your man. And Cheek’s unmarked again. Who you can’t give him a sniff cause that’s why he’s top goalscorer in the league. So frustrating, but yeah, we have to work and try hard in the training pitch, but it’s not going to change unless you know, unless it changes. It’s difficult for me to stand here and people aren’t soft. People aren’t soft. We’ve we’ve won three games at home all season. Tranmere Rovers Football Club shouldn’t be winning three games at home after 25 games. So that’s where I’m away from home.

Interviewer: It has been a little bit better, hasn’t it? I mean, you’ve scored lots of goals away from home. One or two blips along the road certainly, but you found ways to win games away from home rather than here. Are you feeling more pressure here at Prenton Park that the longer this run goes on where you you can’t produce the sort of run of form that Tranmere have previously had here at Prenton Park?

Aaron: I can’t speak for myself personally. I think every game you’re under pressure, but obviously evidently we’re under less pressure away from home. So what whatever it is, it seems like there’s a lift and you know the attendance is just going to keep dropping and dropping. If you’re saving that up every week, it’s nowhere near good enough. And please I include myself in that so I’m not standing here and thinking but we all need to raise it. At home especially cause I think away from home I can’t lie. I think we’re alright. I think we’re alright. That’s not a problem. I think from where we’re at as a group at the minute. I think away from home we’re okay. At home we need to severely address the issues because there’s there’s issues there.

Interviewer: The takeover obviously is above your pay grade. appreciate that in terms of it, but is that sort of uncertainty around the place? You hear from the fans definitely when you’re speaking to them outside the ground. Is that uncertainty getting through? I know you just extended your contract. You know, you’re here for the rest of the season. You want to push on and all those things. I know you’re a positive type of guy, Aaron, but does it hurt make a difference?

Aaron: I’m not going to comment on that, mate. At the end of the day, the takeover doesn’t stop the league top scorer not marked in the box twice. It doesn’t though. So, you can try and hide behind it. It’s easy, isn’t it? I say going back to we’ve lost two goals through the top scoring the league being unmarked in the box when we had jobs that I played with Mitch Pinnock he wants to lift the ball in at all cost it’s not rocket science what they do m I’ll tell you Bromley’s blueprint, but they are top of the league because when they get told to do something they do it to a man and they carry it out and for whatever reason we can’t do it, so that’s where we’re at that’s the harsh reality of it.

Interviewer: Aa message for the fans at all? I mean, you obviously stick with you. It was very very quiet after that early goal went in, wasn’t it?

Aaron: Yeah. Look, it’s I’m a football fan myself, mate. If I watch me team win three games in one more season, it’s very hard, but we need to do more to give them for them to give us more. I’m not going to stand here going soon goes on, you need to stick with us. It’s, we need to give them more, mate. That’s where that’s where the groups at to be completely honest with you. You can you can assess it and you can go through it and you can jump on individual players and say this this, but as a group we’re not good enough at the minute. Where are we in league, where are we in league, 17th? Is that good enough? It’s not is it? So yeah disappointing old cliches to start ourselves down go again. It’s just got to be better mate. So apologies again and I’m sure we’ll watch it like we have done before where we went wrong, where we made mistakes and we’ll see if it changes next week.

Interviewer: Well, stay fit and enjoy the rest of your season. I know I know you’re very ambitious, so have have a good second half of the season.

Bromley boss Andy Woodman, whose side have now won 10 of their last 11 league matches, said: “I thought it was a real tough game for us today and it was a real battle throughout the entire 93 minutes.

“Fair play to Tranmere, they gave us a real tough game, but we expect that from everyone in this league.

“We stood up to the battle and I thought we had some good moments of quality on a difficult day.

“Two goals away from home and a clean sheet, I can’t ask any more than that from my team.

“Fair play to my guys, they really did all the dogged stuff that was needed of them today to win that football match.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Tranmere player Aaron McGowan apologises to fans after the 2-0 defeat to Bromley and recognises a drop in attendances…

@RicciTRFC: I know people say talk is cheap, but I would listen to this. Scathing, he’s right on the players as well. Too many haven’t got the balls to play for Tranmere. It’s a pathetic squad in terms of leadership & accountability #trfc #swa

@KAE1967: Sounds like the lads have been given a job on the pitch and they’re not listening. Has AC lost the dressing room? Do the players no longer want to play for him? Regardless of who the manager is, if a player refuses to give his all, his contract should be terminated.

@bigdikky5: Today he was played in position, did fine. He’s had some shakes today wasn’t one. Thing is, it’s the left side we needed reinforcement. Brough has been horrific for weeks now, Turnbull well JT an injured. When we have a fit LOC, I don’t see McGowan as better for that rcb job #swa

@Liam_O8rien: Not a peep out of our captain after another vile performance. Hes had more than enough time, do one Smallwood. its on Crosby for continually picking him too

@Pinch493: Where was the Crosby flag today he’s a king cos he beat already relegated Harrogate no????

@TRFCWill: Rotten top to bottom. Awful players. I wouldn’t keep a single one.

@Will_ONeill: Palios economics: £400 season ticket = ONLY £100 per win.

@robmclovintyler: Bleak. Zero playing style! Hoofing the ball up for there giant centre backs to easy collect! Hit and hope football! Smallwood worst player we have, man of the match has to be Barrett for me the lad was unlucky due to the players in front of him are frauds!

@StuRyan_1994:
Crosby to take a lot of blame imo
– picking Smallwood!
– short of defenders but insists on this 5 at the back which concedes for fun
– hoof ball when they have giant centre backs
– taking too long to make subs (should of been at half time)
But still …. Fuck off palios

@LukeyRoberts: Most sustainable club in the league though 💪

@rigsby913: Bromley showing us how it’s done. It’s not pretty, but it’s organised and absolutely every single one of them knows what their role is, oh and having a striker that can actually score goals helps a bit as well. Absolute dogshit performance at home yet again. £400 well spent.

@PerpignanFlyer: Absolutely pathetic. Lack of effort lack of ideas. Easiest game Bromley will play all season. Just get the season over and the sale done and clear house i want them all gone bar a handful who give a shit

@tranmere_guy24: Wow. Embarrassing. Our home form is UNACCEPTABLE and I don’t care whatever shit Crosby and Palios make up in interviews or pre match nots the fact is it needs to change and what’s happening at the minute is ridiculous and inexcusable!!!

@JamesClark1996: In absolute disbelief how many people clapped that off today, when is enough going to be enough, getting taking for a ride by a spineless man at the top, fucking joke btw! 👍🏼 Might as well end the season because it’s about where we will finish when it’s all over 👍🏼

@Gidsentinel: How many ways can you say absolutely dog turd? Embarrassing. There should be no way that Blacker isn’t starting games anymore. CJ is our dna, give him the armband

@Robbiedaviesjnr: Fuck off Palios, stick your 40k pounds quid a week up your arse. You’ve killed this club you snivelling shithouse cunt. Your the same as all them other cunts that have destroyed clubs, but you’re a fucking snidey bastard playing the cunting victim, just fucking fuck the fuck off
