Tranmere confirm permanent appointment of manager with club in League Two relegation zone

Tranmere Rovers confirm the permanent appointment of manager Nigel Adkins with the club in the League Two relegation zone.

Adkins has agreed a contract to stay with the them in a permanent capacity as Manager until the end of the 2025/26 season following his spell as interim boss.

Nigel was appointed Tranmere’s Technical Director in the summer but took over as manager on an interim basis following the dismissal of Ian Dawes in September.

So far under Adkins, they have won 2, drew 1 and lost 7. They currently sit second from bottom with a total of 10 points from 16 games played.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Tranmere Rovers are delighted to confirm that Nigel Adkins, who has been in interim charge of the team, has agreed a contract to stay with the Club in a permanent capacity as Manager until the end of the 2025/26 season.

Nigel is a manager with enormous experience, having previously managed clubs including Scunthorpe, where he twice achieved promotion to the Championship, and Southampton, where he achieved back-to-back promotions to take them from League One to the Premier League.

Nigel was appointed Technical Director of Tranmere in the summer but took over the managerial reins on an interim basis following the dismissal of Ian Dawes in September.

Mark Palios said “Nigel inherited a team which was severely depleted by injuries and lacking in confidence, and during his time in interim charge we have still struggled to have a settled squad thanks to squad absences, whether through injuries or red cards.  We aren’t yet out of the injury mire – in particular, we have Luke Norris, Jake Leake and Sam Taylor still to return to the starting line-up â€“ but I have confidence that Nigel has the right blend of skill sets, experience and, importantly, passion, for Tranmere Rovers, to get us back on track and take us forward for the longer term.”

Nigel Adkins said “It’s an honour to take the manager’s role at a club I previously played for, and which is my home-town club.  I have no illusions that we have work to do given our very poor start to the season, however I would not have accepted this role on a permanent basis if I was not confident that we can put it right.  The infrastructure and support that is in place at Tranmere Rovers is top quality and with the support of the SWA it gives us a strong foundation as we look to build momentum and move up the table.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Tranmere confirm the permanent appointment of manager with the club sitting in the League Two relegation zone…

@RoachMalone79: Better be a good January or we’re screwed. And he better start changing the formation.

@DanPerryTRFC: Not gonna lie im actually happy about that

@AaronJohnson___: Mixed feelings about it. Problems run deeper than the manager, and the players for that matter, both are currently a lot better than our league position shows, but whatever is going on at the club is causing us not to perform, buck stops with Palios.

@jamiebirss: Delighted? Behave

@WolfofRamsaySt: Happy enough with the appointment but there’s only so much Nigel can do if the powers that be refuse to back him properly. Help him flourish or sell up it’s quite literally that black and white.

@matthew_j194: Big fuckin Nige!!!! I hope it works out, big January window ahead but glad it’s sorted properly now. Up the Mangoes.

@ChrisTa69386568: It offers everybody clarity but he’s done nothing on the pitch to warrant getting the job, just like Dawes before him unfortunately

@paul_james7: Was the plan all along, someone on here questioned me when I said it and said he knows he doesn’t want the job, can’t remember who it was, he felt he owed dawes so have gave him a crack at it, the plan was always for adkins to take charge, now we have some clarity let’s crack on.

@trfcjonesy: I almost respect Palios’ bravery and shithousery at this point.

@loneranger0714: Am not sure he’s the man especially with this current Squad, which he has been involved with and January could come to late for a great transfer window. Just my own opinion

@StandingAlone77: Jesus, lump on them going down then. Horrendous choice, on par with the Dawes appointment. The guy is a motivational speaker, not a manager. What is Palios thinking?!

@JoshLally4; The cheap option once again

@Roverry95: Boycott

@bensymons26TRFC: Oh my fuck no

@BenDJ91: Now let’s get some better quality coaches in to support him.

@JoshCruzader: Now back him. In terms of pedigree, probably the best we’ve had in a very long time. You can only do so much with what we’ve got so let’s build on that.

@Doyleyy98: Means nothing when palios wont back him in the January window

@dp1414: Ok I can live with this the players now understand he is the manager permanently not in limbo now back him please in January

@TroupyTRFC: Certainty is good. Now let’s get right behind him and back him properly.

@neil_gjohnson: Can’t complain about this, just need the backing for some decent players.

@j0emcelr0y: Tranmere saw an interim lose 5 games on the bounce, not changing formation or tactics once, and went “yeh he seems good enough for the job”

@mattfordmusic: Thank you for the clarity. SWA

@Will_ONeill: Right. We have clarity. This was essential. He is clearly a good manager and smart. HE MUST BE BACKED IN JANUARY!!!

@Gidsentinel: Needed clarity, desperately. Results need to change for the better obviously, but I’m very very happy. January will be massive and going forward too. Congratulations @TheNigelAdkins made up for you and for us 🇸🇱

@michaelupton96: Finally some much needed clarity. Hopefully this will galvanise those spineless fucks (bar one or two) who pull on the shirt each week
