He then joined the club as assistant manager in 2016 from League One side Shrewsbury alongside Mellon.
The Scot had been in charge of the Merseyside outfit, a club he also played for, since 2016, and have guided them out of the National League and into League One.
However they were narrowly relegated to League Two a few months ago after clubs voted to end the season based on points-per-game.
Tranmere said on their website: After having considered a long list of extremely high calibre candidates who registered their interest in the vacant managerial position, Tranmere Rovers, are delighted to confirm the appointment of Mike Jackson as first team manager.
Chairman, Mark Palios said: “Mike has been a big part of our success in recent years and has earned his chance to make the step up to managing the team.
After having considered a long list of extremely high calibre candidates who registered their interest in the vacant managerial position, Tranmere Rovers, are delighted to confirm the appointment of Mike Jackson as first team manager.
“He is a great coach with a forward-thinking approach to the game and understands the Tranmere DNA. On top of all of this, he is a proven winner in his career to date.
“Having spent many hours talking to Mike over the last couple of weeks regarding his plans for development of the team, I was excited by his ideas and also mindful of the benefits of the continuity that his appointment would represent; he knows the players in our squad, how to get the best out of them and where we need to strengthen.
“I am looking forward to working with him in his new role at the Club.”
New first team manager, Jackson, said: “I am really proud to have this opportunity to manage this fantastic football club that I have played for and coached.
“I am really excited about getting going. It is a great challenge and I can’t wait to get started.
“I understand exactly what is required to manage this football club and what is expected from a Tranmere manager, and a Tranmere player, and I am determined to help move the football club in the right direction.
“I know what the supporters expect from a Tranmere Rovers team, and the important role they play, and as a Club, we are focused on moving forwards together.”

Deserves a chance after what he’s done for us over the last 4 years. Desperate to see him succeed. Hopefully, this means we can spend a little more on players. Mike Jackson’s SWA!

Whatever people wanted or think. Let’s get behind Jacko, and give him our full support.
I’d love to see us appoint a Director of Football or Head of Recruitment to spearhead that side of things.

Sensible appointment. I’d rather have a football club than break the bank for a big name appointment. #swa

Great appointment. Knows the club as well as anybody out there, no need for a major shakeup. Theres a reason why Micky has took him everywhere hes gone.

It’s not a bad appointment, can’t throw him under the bus before he’s had a fair crack of the whip,
Unproven, but isn’t everyone at some point. I’d say we’re definitely in safe hands, but you never know we could be good or even great hands. Good luck Jacko, back him from the off— D.Rob 81 (@DROBBO1981) July 18, 2020
I’m hoping this ain’t a BAD appointment. Let’s get behind our new manager.

Yes! ?
Really pleased with this decision. Any appointment is a gamble, but MJ has excellent credentials for the job and I have every hope he can bring us success.
Michael Jackson’s Super White Army! ???

I’ll back him, he’s played for us, been assistant manager during our modern glory years and he knows what we fans expect. He’ll feel injustice for last season too so let’s push on now we’ve got a man in place ? MJ’s SWA

Great appointment in my opinion, granted Lowe was always my first choice. But Jacko’s the one at the centre of all the training during Mellon’s reign. He knows this league better than most. #teamjacko ?

Great appointment. No point and no need to take a risk by bringing in someone new, and who won’t ‘get’ Tranmere. #swa #trfc
