Torquay United slammed after Chelmsford game gets postponed just over an hour before kick off

Torquay United are being slammed this evening after tonight’s league match against Chelmsford City was postponed just an hour and a half before kick off.

The National League South leaders announced the news and a waterlogged pitch at 6:30pm however there was no talk from them of any planned pitch inspection all day.

Chelmsford City fans, staff and team had already made the long trek to the west of the country only to find out the pitch was being looked at before being deemed not playable.

TORQUAY UNITED CLUB STATEMENT:

“After some heavy rain and more expected on Tuesday night, a sustained attempt was made during the day to bring in a local referee for a pitch inspection. Unfortunately, none were available to come to Plainmoor to allow the possibility of an earlier postponement.

“The grounds team took every precaution possible before match day to give the game every opportunity to be played. For most of the day the pitch was in a playable state, and the grounds team continued working throughout.

“We would like to apologise for the late announcement and the inconvenience it has caused everyone attending the match.

“The decision to postpone the match was made by match referee James Durkin in a 6:10pm pitch inspection.

“A new date for the match will be announced in due course.”

Since the decision, football fans took to the club’s social media account to give their angry reaction to the late postponement as well as sympathise with the travelling fans – check out what the tweeted on the next page.
