Torquay United were left embarrassed after their humiliating FA Cup 2QR defeat to lower league opposition Bishops Cleeve on Saturday.
The National League South club were dumped out much earlier than expected, with manager Paul Wotton shocked at losing 3-0 to a team from the 8th tier.
Ross Langworthy jumped on a defensive mix-up to put Bishops Cleeve ahead on the 10th minute, before making it 2-0 five minutes into the second half. Then Ethan Dunbear got a third with 20 minutes remaining,
It was described to be the biggest game in the Southern League Division One side’s history. A boy did they shine. A well deserved win.

“I’m humiliated,” Wotton told BBC Radio Devon.
“It’s embarrassing, we were second best. I don’t even think we were second best, there’s absolutely zero credit to be had today.
“Bishops Cleeve should have won by more, I’m at a loss really.
“I can’t accept that performance for Torquay United. We didn’t win a header, we didn’t win a tackle.
“Our physicality was non-existent, our forward play was non-existent. I can suffer a lack of quality in a football game, I’ve got no problem with that, but I’m embarrassed with that team today.”
Wotton said, per Devon Live: “I don’t even think we were second best. Absolutely zero credit to be had today. Bishops Cleeve should have won by more. I am at a loss really, I didn’t think I would see that. They were pre-warned all week. But what I will say is, I thought training was flat all week because there was disappointment from the Welling game. I can’t accept that. I can’t accept that performance from Torquay United.
“We didn’t win a header, we didn’t win a tackle. The first half we were playing into a really strong wind, I told them to turn them in behind and play in their half but we persisted in playing short balls into midfield and Bishops Cleeve were on us. Our physicality was non-existent, our forward play was non-existent, the quality was non-existent. I can suffer a lack of quality in a football game, I have no problem with that, but I am embarrassed by the team today.
“Some people will say it doesn’t matter, we were never going to win the FA Cup. Some of the players might think that. That’s outrageous.”
On the next game for Torquay, against St Albans City who sit bottom of the league, Wotton says: It is not a case of drawing a line under it, we have had a good start in the league. There has to be an element of that at some point, but not now, not at this moment at time. That has got to sting. Bishops Cleeve should have won by more. That’s not good enough for Torquay United Football Club.”
Here’s how fans reacted with Torquay left embarrassed after their humiliating FA Cup 2QR defeat to Bishops Cleeve…
Jordan Vater: Let’s not lie, it wouldn’t be torquay without a end of the world result against a stinking team. Nothing like a team to ruin your optimism
Dartmoor with Ania: A poor result, let’s get behind our club, we will recover and move on. There have been so many excellent things happening, balance them against Saturday’s result, things will improve for sure.
Adam Whipps: I warned of giant killers and everyone thought we’d romp it!
Neil Clewer: Get Neil in that dressing Room…. 😡
Jason Catterall: Disgraceful, totally unacceptable
Lee Collett: Shocking scoreline
Andrew Senneck: Should be ashamed of themselves after this. Fair play to Bishops Cleeve who clearly wanted it more and best of luck to them but losing to a club at this level is not the result of a club that is supposed to be going in the right direction again and is an absolute embarrassment.
Stuart Head: And I thought we couldn’t have a worse result than last years abject failures. But here we are again losing to a village team I think Mr warnock needs to inject his management to our beloved club
I didn’t say we need a drastic change but a shove in the right direction
Charlie Swiderski: Focus on league now, forget the fa cup
Martin Peters: Poor result that, but move on
Roger Metcalfe: Jeepers that’s so poor. We knew it would be bumpy but that performance is simply not acceptable under any regime. This will test our manager’s and team’s ability to bounce back next time out. Feel for the many that travelled today 🥲🙈
Dennis Kallmer: Zero cutting edge. It’s a long trip back to Torbay. We move on.
David James: Don’t let this blow away the achievements of the recent few months. Lucky to have a club at all. It’s the FA cup and fluke results happen. Move on and concentrate on a. Stabilising place in the league.
Adam Geary: Poor result that, can’t spin it any other way. A small cup run would have done the club wonders.
Jordan Vater: That’s a pretty unacceptable result that tbf, Wotton needs to rally them back up now as the last few games haven’t been good… I back him to do so
Jon Tandy: Not good but on the other side we can concentrate on the league and stay up near the top
Steve Walsh: Well that’s not good at all, should be ashamed of themselves
Mason Bell: Good, now concentrate on the league
Jamie Cole: Worst result in our history, pathetic performance
Sam Searle: Atrocious, absolutely disgusted
Andy Hobbs: Didn’t make for good listening today but, when you make a reasonable start and get nothing then, this is usually how it goes. It’s one thing to make chances and miss them but, to not make chances is a completely different problem. I back PW to get it sorted. It was never going to be plain sailing this season and this is, obviously, a low point. Like any team we need a 20 goal a season striker. Keep the faith guys.
