Top six favourites to become new Rotherham boss and latest on Cardiff manager’s job

In this article, we take a look at the top six favourites to become new Rotherham boss and see the latest on the Cardiff manager’s job.

According to Paul Davis, applications are already coming in at the Millers with chairman Tony Stewart meeting with senior staff and expects interviews going into next week.

This comes after Paul Warne made the decision to quit in order to take up the position at Derby County, with Liam Rosenior stepping down.

Rotherham currently sit 8th in the Championship table with 14 points from 9 games while Derby are 7th in League One with 14 points from 9 games.

So who next for the Millers?

Grimsby Town manager Paul Hurst has revealed there’s been no contact from Rotherham United regarding their managerial vacancy at this stage, speaking to BBC Radio Humberside.

Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth has always been Rotherham United‘s preferred managerial target to replace Paul Warne.

Ainsworth himself however has quashed the rumours, and speaking to the press, he said: “Today [September 22], was the first I heard of it.

“My daughter called me up and said that I was on the message boards at West Brom and Steve Bruce hasn’t even lost his job.

“He is still in charge as far as I know.

“All these rumours are just rumours and I am really happy with what I have got here.

“The moment I start looking around and looking at what I might be able to have [elsewhere] is the moment I let myself down as a manager.

“It’s not about the figure – it’s about the feeling and I am really, really happy here.

“I’m not saying that I am going to be here forever because something might come along one day that I might consider, but at the moment, I am loving it here.

“I’m really happy here and my focus is to get the team prepared for Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.”

Rotherham United chairman Tony Stewart says the first thing he will be looking for in a new manager is intelligence and communication skills.

Speaking to Paul Davis of the Rotherham Advertiser, Stewart also indicted he will be looking for a ‘young manager’ because ‘I don’t like old habits. Old habits can be bad habits.’

Stewart also said, ‘We’ve lost a piece of the jigsaw but the picture is still there and we have to find a piece to put in place. We’ve got the squad, we’ve got the recruitment, we’ve got the backroom staff.’

Now we’ve seen the top six favourites to become new Rotherham boss, it’s time to look at another club without a permanent manager, and here’s the latest on that Cardiff manager’s job…

Cardiff City have been “inundated” with interest in the managerial vacancy since Steve Morison’s exit and could still appoint a boss in the coming days if a particular candidate stands out, according to a report from Wales Online.

Morison was dismissed last week following a disappointing 1-0 defeat against strugglers Huddersfield Town, failing to build on their midweek win at Middlesbrough.

The Welsh outfit currently sit in 18th place after claiming 11 points from 10 league games, something that was potentially expected considering how new the second-tier side’s squad is following a major rebuild this summer.

Owner Vincent Tan has opted to pull the trigger due to results and wants the club to move up the table as quickly as possible, with Mark Hudson looking like the front runner to take the top job in the Welsh capital.

According to Wales Online, he is set to be given the chance to take the club forward for a run of games before a decision is taken on whether he’s the right man for the longer term.

Anyway, with that in mind, here’s the top six favourites for that too.

Mark Hudson – 1/2
Sol Bamba – 7/1
Nathan Jones – 8/1
Craig Bellamy – 10/1
Jody Morris – 12/1
Scott Parker – 14/1

Fans gave their thoughts on the top six favourites to become new Rotherham boss and the latest on the Cardiff manager’s job…

ON ROTHERHAM

@Rufcjoe87: Personally, I’d take Robinson or Ainsworth. Whatever our fans think (maby seem against it) both get results in pitch and, this season at least, that’s what’s important. Hurst, not really done it at this level, not sure about him. Would take Bonner also. Warnock would be nice!!

@craighay: A good fit for them would be Liam Manning at MK Dons

@rufc__cal: duncan ferguson 🤔 #rufc

@DarrenMarshall4: @OfficialRUFC #rufc Here’s an innovative thought…….what about Emma Hayes from Chelsea? Proven manager, quality coach and deserving of a chance in the men’s game.

@deano_rufc: Personally, from the realistic options, I’d like Mark Bonner or Duncan Ferguson. Not many other names jump out at me. Karl Robinson would be decent but would prefer the first two. #rufc

@dysonrufc: Hurst would be a dream if success was guaranteed. I don’t think it’s time for sentiment… Time to “go for it” for the sake of progress. Anything less than a Warburton / Cowley appointment would be a missed opportunity I feel #rufc

@Rufcjoe87: Would take Robins back #rufc

@sammyhad1986: Mark bonner for me or Matt Taylor at Exeter

@michael06005944: Big Dunc full of passion, but don’t know if we could afford him

@TheBaldyWolfer: Warnock, McCarthy or big Dunk

@smith98_josh: Give me Duncan Ferguson now.

@PFCRhys_: mark bonner would genuinely be so solid, one of the top class managers in this league. also stay away from the cowley’s.

@TerryRufc: Could see warburton as our manager tbf #rufc

@Rufcjoe87: Seems Mark Bonner is the only one most fans all agree on #rufc

@foreverayellow: warburton would be perfect for rotherham imo

ON CARDIFF

@Alfiewalker1203: Cowley or Schumacher the other I’d say

@georgelccfc: Manning 🙏

@BarmyBluebird94: Would love manning tbh

@Jake_PFC: Danny Cowley would not downgrade 👍🏻

@diffmj: Manning or Schumacher and it’s not a crisis

@DippyDon_95: At this point I just hope Manning goes to one of these clubs ASAP because I’m bored of the speculation

@CornyRUFC: Mark hudson to be given time but wouldn’t let Morrison have Time makes sense

@DaioGoddard: Sol would be a mistake imo he has no experience but not against him coming in as a coach. Whoever they bring in i hope its not a cheap gamble

@mjenkins1927: Go for Sol. Why not?

@ellisCCFCscull: Morison’s biggest issue was his inexperience, yet out of him, Hudson and Bamba, he’s the most experienced coach. I can’t see either of them doing a better job than he did. Awful decision. Sack the board

@DonLeShoes: Bamba should have a role at Cardiff. He’s no experienced for being manager. Dream on!

@lennym08: I’d love to see Scott Parker take the job but there is no way he’d join Cardiff unfortunately, not with a substantial war chest for transfers.

@SamHill180: Jones is favourite due to the Cardiff links obviously but are any of these serious contenders. Wouldn’t be surprised by any appointment the board make at this point

@SteveMorse1927: Isn’t this more or less exactly what they said about Morison when they sacked Mick? 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

@Dai_Doniol: It’ll be the wrong choice eventually, whatever it is.

@mjenkins1927: Trouble is football (especially in the Championship) isn’t all about having the right philosophy. You need character, leadership & some physicality and we lack all three.

@Simon1927: I love both Hudson and Sol. But Mark Hudson as first team coach for 9 months now…. Our defence still leaks embarrassingly bad goals. Sol has never managed a game. How are these options better than giving Morison at least until January?!

@kane_richy: It’s going to be Hudson, you know how these guys operate. Hire him on a short term contract, does alright, extend him. Lose a couple of games……sack him.
