Top six favourites to become new Doncaster manager as club sacks their head coach

The top six favourites to become new Doncaster Rovers manager has been revealed as the club sacks their head coach Danny Schofield.

The 43-year-old came in to replace Gary McSheffrey in October but won just 10 of his 33 matches in charge and ended up finishing 18th in the League Two table.

His departure from the club caps off a tough season for Schofield, who was also sacked after just nine games as Huddersfield boss in September.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Doncaster Rovers can confirm that Danny Schofield has been relieved of his duties as head coach with immediate effect.

Chairman David Blunt said: “It is with the deepest regret that we have made this decision.

“Danny is a Doncaster lad and everyone at the club desperately wanted him to be a success here. His dedication, commitment and work ethic during his time at the club have been unquestionable.

“Whilst it is true Danny has not had the opportunities to build his own team, and the injuries have depleted the squad, we would have still expected to see a better turn of results than what has been achieved this season.

“In recent weeks, Danny has handled some difficult circumstances with the utmost dignity and has the respect and best wishes of all staff at Doncaster Rovers.

“We expect to announce Danny’s replacement within the next 10 days.”

TOP SIX FAVOURITES TO BECOME NEW DONCASTER MANAGER

Grant McCann – 4/1
Darrell Clarke – 8/1
Danny Cowley – 8/1
Graham Alexander – 10/1
David Artell – 10/1
Karl Robinson – 12/1

Schofield said after the defeat at Walsall: “It’s disappointing. I felt in the first half we were good and really competitive. I felt the game was in the balance and there wasn’t a lot between the two teams. They started the second half much better, on the front foot.

“The way we conceded the first goal was disappointing because we had pressure in the far corner which led to that. We didn’t defend the box well enough and it’s cost us in the end. It was from our throw in. We allowed their centre back to get out of that position and let him out too easy. There was a number of moments leading to that goal where we fell short.

“I didn’t feel there was a great deal in the game but certain moments went for Walsall.

“For me, that is really disappointing. We want to finish as high up as possible. The aim is always play-offs and it’s not materialised. We were in and around it up until the end of February and fell off in March and April which is not good enough.

“We need to reflect and have discussions with everyone in the club and see where we go taking the club forward.”

This what what fans had to say as the top six favourites to become new Doncaster manager is revealed…

@andysimms1989: Thrown under the bus like the past couple of managers! Shame it wasn’t a statement saying David Blunt had resigned!

@hhealer17: This is brilliant but people can’t get over the top. Danny obviously wasn’t good enough but if anyone thinks only he was the only problem are absolutely miles out. Next appointment is huge #drfc

@lukepeo1867: Is that 2 sackings In 1 season for him 😂

@martw17: Why do I find the word dismissed offensive even though it’s true as such. Given the gushing praise of the guy in the article I am sure there was a better word or phrase than dismissed

@AdamBat92308251: He was more suited to academy football were results do not matter as much. The mistakes of previous managers can not be repeated again with the next appointment. Hiring from an academy level appears to bring a mindset unsuited to football were points matter.

@Az2Bo: It’s a start but we need a decent replacement now and the money promised to be used for them to build a decent squad.

@Adamlukevicker1: SEASON TICKET IS GETTING RENEWED!!

@drfcdan: Right decision but let’s be honest, Danny was never the problem. Until the board realise they’re the cause of the mess we’re in it’ll just keep happening.

@Roverstill87971: @grantmccann11 commeeee on, ur time too shine! Give us all what we want! #drfc

@j17_jj: Hi @grantmccann11 we love you, please come back and say hello. And maybe a promotion push if you fancy it… love and best wishes, EVERY DONCASTER ROVERS FAN. You may also get bums on seats. See you soon. 😘🔴⚪️ #DRFC

@Dylanshaw25: Get the fucking helling in

@philskyross1962: McCann please. Make my day 🙏

@drfc_network: Took your time

@scottnixon001: Can’t say I’m surprised.

@AndyFromDonny: Absolutely delighted, it’s been a horrendous season. Big respect for him for trying to make it work but never has a change been needed so much. #drfc

@PopsideView: Can only hope @grantmccann11 wants the job get the fans back and sell the current 1k season ticket shortage #drfc

@southstandclez: Thank goodness and please learn from this and get an experienced man for the job and sorry it did not work for Danny

@elderberry21: Good news now bring in a respectable manager of this league and above of the efl and we rebuild 👍🙌🏻

@Deano0789: Another manager thrown under the bus i wonder who will join the circus next 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️ surely McCann won’t return he left due to not being backed by the same board and we are in a lot worse position now!! #drfc

@StandingAlone77: Not a surprise. So many poor appointment decisions this season from clubs in L2. Matty Etherington, Jody Morris, Keith Curle, Jim Bentley, Schofield.

@JKJMusic: Get McCann in and my season ticket’s bought

@jackhenwood_: Why’s it took until the end of the season? Would make 100x more sense to get a manager in for the final few games of the season so he can asses the players

@RhysDRFC: Now get someone who McCann actually do the job

@rtidkeaton: Trust the process #drfc

@drfc_ben: Oh my god it actually happened, please get this right this time #drfc
