Three red cards and two goals in five minutes as Fulham bottle 1-0 lead to lose 3-1 at Man Utd

Three red cards and two goals in five minutes as Fulham bottle 1-0 lead to lose 3-1 at Man Utd in the FA Cup quarter final on Sunday evening.

Alexander Mitrovic, Willian, and Marco Silva were all given marching orders against Manchester United, in what was quite surreal moments in this tie.

Fulham broke the deadlock 50 minutes in thanks to Mitro, after Issa Diop produced a superb flick to send a corner onto Mitrovic, who slammed in at the back post.

There was a check by VAR as Marcus Rashford went down inside the box after appearing to get clattered but the goal stood.

Then on the 71st minute, Antony broke clear after a Fulham attack and sent Jadon Sancho clear. Sancho went past the goalkeeper before shooting, Willian cleared off the line. The ball was found to hit William’s arm.

A penalty was awarded while Willian is sent off… but so was Mitrovic as he lost his cool and put his head right in the face of the ref, seemingly shoving the official and it led to a straight red.

Fulham boss Marco Silva was also sent off for approaching the referee, who had been looking at the monitor and was very quickly given a red card.

Bruno Fernandes rolled in the spot kick and Manchester United were level. Then Manchester United immediately took the lead, Marcel Sabitzer flicked in from close range from Luke Shaw’s pass. Two Man Utd goals in two minutes.

Fulham boss Marco Silva to ITV: “Let’s talk about all the game and not just one moment.

Until the penalty moment and the red cards we were clealry the best team on the pitch.

We were the best team on the pitch, clearly.

For me it was a decision the VAR can take.

What is difficult to understand is why the two moments in the box in the first half one of them is a clear penalty and nobody checks, nobody sees.”

On if it was a missed chance for Fulham: “Yes, definitely. On the pitch we were the best team until that moment.

It’s difficult for us to understand. Chris [Kavanagh] was in a game we played away at West Ham where we lost with two clear handballs, we received the apology because of the mistakes.

The last game at Leeds in the FA Cup it was him again.

And for a game that is the quarter-finals it’s him again, it’s difficult to understand.

Of course we respect that he’s a top referee in this country, I accept that, but unfortunately for us with us he’s it’s been really unhappy this season.”

Ā

Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag, speaking to ITV on the performance:Ā ā€œIn possession, we could have been better. Out of possession, we were excellent. We came under pressure, gave away some set pieces and then conceded the goal. David de Gea kept us in the game after we conceded.

On his players’ condition:Ā ā€œThis team has great character. We are mentally and physically fit, and Iā€™m happy with our progress as a team.

On Willianā€™s handball:Ā ā€œIt was so clear and obvious. Handball in the box is a clear penalty. But itā€™s not for me to comment on them. Itā€™s for me to talk about Manchester United and thatā€™s it.

On Marcel Sabitzer’s return:Ā ā€œHe had a great performance. We are glad he is back from injury. We will be playing a game every three days between now and the end of the season so we need as many fit players as possible.ā€

Here’s how fans reacted with three red cards and two goals in five minutes as Fulham bottle a 1-0 lead to lose 3-1 at Man Utd…

@NTrei: So when Fernandes pushed the ref the other week that was just pushed aside as they were getting smashed. Seems fair

@tweetSP0RT: These are scenes that you do not want to see… the rest of the world yes we do.

@thomasffc541: Genuinely do not understand why players take red cards like Willian. Especially in that game where we were definitely the better team. 1-1 and we have more than a chance. Mitrovic totally unacceptable, thought he was past that. Now he is going to miss critical games.

@ViggeComps: We had the game. Unnecessary and unacceptable performance.

@Keelanw4: Played absolutely brilliantly and yet completely let down. Inexcusable

@WPage14: Pulling, pushing or shaking, or a general attitude towards the match officials which, even if only slightly violent, without confirming an aggressive attitude on their part, will be punished with a suspension of four to 12 games,” says the code’s article

@LJVRacingMedia: At the end of the day. A lack of self control and discipline has undone a marvellous performance and a golden chance of an FA Cup Semi Final. 1-1 with 10 men, we still had a chance. Our season will now suffer as a result. Such a Fulhamish implosion

@TheMouth180: The better team lost! But it was self defeating, they lost the plot. Even at 1-1 ( if we would of scored the penalty ) you with 10 men was still in the game. 3 needless red cards ruined what could of be a great day for Fulham

@C_P_C_Y_R_K: About time we saw refs stand up! Now start carding the likes of teams like Man Utd for surrounding refs!

@JackRuleLD: Absolutely disgusting scenes and just another reason as to why I canā€™t stand football. This disrespect and behaviour from players is appalling and they are supposed to be ā€œRole Modelsā€

@salopcast: Good on the ref. This type of behaviour needs to stop. I would go as far as: swearing at the ref is a yellow card. It would soon stop.

@WPage14: This is the first time I have EVER been embarrassed to be a Fulham fan. Absolutely disgusting. Was a pen and probably a red all day long but to react like that was shameful. Probably ruined the rest of our campaign

@paulspills: If you touch an official no matter how lightly u should be banned for months not weeks. That behaviour trickles all the way down to Sunday league & kids footie. Make an example of Mitro & Fulham. Chelsea were cheated out of a cl final in 2009 by a corrupt ref, suck it up.

@NRayner7: If I were a Fulham fan, Iā€™d be ashamed. Silva and Mitrovicā€™s conduct here needs dealing with. Who does Mitrovic think he is putting his hands on the referee? Glad they got beat in the end. A great 70 mins by his team till that petulant idiot did that.

@GreggC_CC: Mitrovic needs a LONG ban for that. Fulham fined for losing control of players (and manager too) Ban him for the rest of the season. Can’t be putting hands on the referee. #MUNFUL #FACup

@MarkPearson28: Could pretty much guarantee that the two extra red cards would not have been shown if they were for Man Utd and not Fulham.

@jm_bell95: This is a disgrace. Fernandes shouldā€™ve gone the other week when he pushed a linesman. Mitrovic should face a lengthy ban to set a precedence here. This is outrageous and you canā€™t defend it. Moronic behaviour. Fair play to Chris Kavanagh šŸ‘šŸ¼

@alexjbut: Fulham implode. Grown men behaving like idiots. Well done to the referee. Stood firm #FACup
