England boss Thomas Tuchel:
“James Garner just has a fantastic season. He’s always available for Everton. He plays in multiple positions, right defender, left defender, No 6, No 8, he’s fast, he has a clean foot, takes all the set pieces. I think he deserves… he’s a bit underrated player and I saw him many times now live and convinced about his quality and his character and want to see how he does camp.
Sky Sports News‘ Rob Dorsett:
“I’m hugely surprised there’s no Trent Alexander-Arnold.
“You have to say, he will be very fearful for his chances of making the World Cup squad now.
“If he is fit and playing well for his club, and Thomas Tuchel has named a 35-man squad, and Reece James, England’s first-choice right-back, is not available, and he still can’t make an extended squad like this, you have to read into it is that Tuchel doesn’t fancy him.
“There may be something we don’t know about. Maybe there’s any underlying injury or they’ve had a conversation, but there’s nothing I’m aware of.
“A huge name in English football, one of the best ball-players in English football, is not part of the squad and that’s a huge statement from Tuchel.
“The midfield is interesting as well. We’re talking about Declan Rice, Elliot Anderson and Jordan Henderson as nailed on, probably the first three choices in midfield.
“It’s pretty clear that Thomas Tuchel is looking at other options. Alex Scott misses out, Adam Wharton is still in.
“Kobbie Mainoo and James Garner both have huge opportunities now to stake their claim on what I think is one more space in the midfield and to go on that plane to America.
“The 35 players selection is fascinating. Not been done before, has it? It’s a new approach and the one thing we’ve seen from Tuchel is that he’s not afraid to rip up the copybook and try things.
“It’s innovative. It’s interesting to see if the dynamic works. If he’s that clearly delineated in terms of these are our new guys, let’s see how they get on and this is our more established players that we will give more rest to.
“That’s going to lead to an interesting dynamic when it comes to picking the squad and seeing who is available and who is still in the camp by the time we get to that first game a week from tomorrow. We’ll have to ask him directly about that. That needs a bit of explaining.
“You have to applaud the fact that Tuchel is trying something a little bit different with the squad. How the players will react to that, I’m not entirely sure. I’ve never seen a scenario where you’ve got 35 players inside of camp at the same time.
“Tuchel is prepared to drop the big names and he’s said that repeatedly. But he’s kicked the can down the road in terms of this squad in terms of these selections.
“I wondered if he might narrow it down now and work with a smaller squad. Particularly the No 10s.
“The options at No 10 are still huge. Bellingham, Rogers, Foden, Palmer, Eze – they can’t all get game time in these two friendly matches.
“He’s going to have to make decisions in training about who his priorities are.
“I don’t think all five of those No 10s can go, Tuchel has suggested as much.
“You might have a huge call where you see a Cole Palmer miss out or Foden or Eze. Big calls still to be made and I don’t think Tuchel has made them yet.”
Here’s how fans reacted as Thomas Tuchel names England squad for upcoming games against Uruguay and Japan..
@jpenman5: We probably could do with an extra goalie in there
@danlukeashby: I really like what Tuchel has done with this England squad. He knows it’s his last chance to look at players so he’s picked a bigger squad to see how players like Garner DCL Hall Maguire are around the camp. #ThreeLions
@FPLVillan: Enlarged squad with 3 strikers but still no room for Ollie who was back up 9 at the previous camp. Thats damning but unfortunately deserved. Hopefully fires a rocket up his arse for the final stretch of the season, made a good impact last night.
@afcbpodcast: No Alex Scott 😕 Integral part of a team that’s 10 unbeaten, cannot work out what more the lad could’ve done… Play for a ‘bigger’ club perhaps? 🤷🏼♂️ Keep pushing starboy. 💪🏼🍒
@rianmbfc: Exciting squad. Pretty damning for Trent, but as long as Reece James is fit I think it’s nailed on he’s our right back anyway, and Livramento and Spence as backup options can cover both sides, so can see why they’re appealing.
@TrentEndRed01: The one time MGW proves his form he doesn’t get picked, I think it’s an absolute piss take Foden has been picked ahead of him he’s hardly played 😂
@TheVillaPolls: Big wake up to Ollie, hopefully this gives him the fire to get back to the form we know he’s capable of! #AVFC
@zachkaye_afcb: Alex Scott would walk into this starting team, to be left out of the squad for the likes of Henderson, garner, Wharton, Anderson, and Bellingham is a joke
@OllieC_BHA: Seriously?? How the fuck is Solanke in over Welbeck 🤣🤣 Buzzing for Steele though
