Thomas Frank responds to boos and chants from ‘furious’ Tottenham fans in the 0-0 draw with Brentford on New Year’s Day.
Spurs fans make it clear they were losing patience with their side as they sing ‘boring, boring Tottenham’ along with a number of other chants.
Kevin Schade saw his 5th minute opener ruled out for offside. Cristian Romero also escaped being shown a red card for a last-man foul. He’d already had a yellow. Shortly after, Spurs felt they should have been given a penalty when Archie Gray went down, but nothing was given.
The goalless draw, which is Tottenham’s first in 137 Premier League games, means Tottenham remain in the bottom of half of the Premier League table in 12th, while Brentford stay a point above in 9th.
Supporter Chris Cowlin said in an interview with Sky Sports: “It has been boring all season actually under Thomas Frank, and we have heard boos at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium a lot this season.
“We heard them at the recent away game at Nottingham Forest and of course last night. It is boring, and the fans also sang ‘we want our money back’ and the whole of the first half, it was far from entertaining.
“So the Spurs fans actually sang about recent stars, Son, Harry Kane, Eric Dier, even Soldado got a mention. It was extremely frustrating last night.
“We clearly went to Brentford wanting a draw, Vacario looking really pleased that we got a 0-0 draw, and he was time-wasting in that first half.
“It is incredibly frustrating because under Ange Postacoglou last season, at this stage of the season, we are sitting 11th at the moment, and the way that Thomas Frank comes out a number of times and says, you have got to remember where we finished 17th last year, he was almost saying to the fans that if we finish 16th and above, then it has been a success. It has been far from entertaining this season so far.”
Fans are unhappy with Ange’s attacking football, because Spurs were so open at the back, then this season, being more solid defensively, but you are not happy about the lack of creativity.
Chris replied: ” I think you need somewhere in between. It has been incredibly frustrating, the lack of intent. It is like we set up, Thomas Frank sets up more for us not to lose a game, rather than actually go to win a game. Our motto is to dare is to do. We are certainly not daring, and we are certainly not doing.
“Yes, the players need to be better, the transfer windows need to be better, but you have got to ask yourself, can a manager get better out of this squad? I believe that they can. The fans are becoming increasingly frustrated with Thomas Frank. The performances need to be better, the results need to be better, the attack and intent need to be better.
“Like I said, to dare is to do, that is our motto. You have got to be more daring in games. It is too defensive, and it is very, very boring.
“As a Spurs fan, I go home in a way, I have never ever known this amount of boos in a season, let alone a first season with a manager there.”
Asked if fans are all happy with Thomas Frank as the manager being appointed in the summer, and are we at the stage now where fans have actually changed their mind and want to move on already, or is it to do with the recruitment?
Chris replied: Well, I think he has lost fans week by week, and I think that is very, very fair to say. I feel like I am a very patient fan.
“I am losing my patience week by week, and how long I can keep my positivity up supporting Spurs, I do not know, because you have got to be seeing signs in games.
“You have to see positivity week by week, and he has really frustrated and criticised the fan base a number of times, and that does not always go down well, and as you saw there, your picture showed, the closer he got to the away end, and he does this thing in every game, whether we win, lose or draw, he always goes over to the away end, and the boos just got louder and louder the closer he got.”
The boos were loud at the end… they got even louder when Thomas Frank came over to the away end.

Tottenham manager Thomas Frank speaking to BBC MOTD: “It was very nice and very special in many, many ways. Very happy with that. It was nice to be back and nice to acknowledge things both ways and then the whistle goes and it’s business and you want to win the game.
On not creating as many chances as he would have liked: “Definitely, we don’t create enough. I think we dealt with half of the challenge here because they are very strong at home. They only gave seven shots away in the whole game so very happy with that but we didn’t create enough. The amount of unforced errors today was too big.”
On Romero’s tackle on Thiago: “I think there was that which was a 50/50 with Cristian Romero on Thiago and then there was the 50/50 penalty on Archie Gray. I think if that was given, it would not be overturned.”
On Tottenham’s away form being better than their home form: “We understand the different and difficult opponent away from home and it is linked to the amount of chances we can create and will create and we need to continually work on that.”
The travelling Spurs fans are singing ‘Boring, boring Tottenham’. They’ve wheeled out chants for loads of nostalgic figures tonight in Dele Alli, Martin Jol, Ledley King, Mousa Dembele and now Eric Dier.

Frank on Brennan Johnson possibly joining Crystal Palace, speaking to Sky Sports: “Obviously, there is probably something close, but that is it.”
Frank, speaking to Sky Sports on the game: “Two ways, tight even game. We know how good Brentford have been here at home.
“Defended excellently, a fantastic clean sheet mentality, that was the positive thing. The negative is we want to play better and we want to create more.
“The amount of unforced errors was too big.”
On transfer window: “We are definitely out there doi
Brentford manager Keith Andrews speaking to BBC MOTD: “Lovely to see Thomas [Frank], as always. [He’s] somebody who I respect hugely. I enjoyed working with him last season. Tonight I thought we edged it and if anybody was going to win the game it was probably us.”
On Brentford’s missed chances: “They beat us twice last season, they deserved to beat us 26 days ago at Spurs. Today was a completely different performance. We wanted it quick in the tempo in the second half and they tried to slow it down.
“Thomas is very aware of what this home crowd can do and how dangerous we can be. Their goalkeeper got booked for time wasting which pretty much says it all.”
On Cristian Romero’s challenge on Igor Thiago: “Two games in a row he has been very fortunate not to get red cards for tackles on Thiago.
“I don’t think it’s an easy one for the officials, I thought the one in the home game was a very easy one and I am always very respectful of the individuals and understanding of the job that they have to do but I thought he was really fortunate.
“I thought the irony of us getting checked for a penalty and there was nothing around the challenge on Thiago which, having watched it back, was a blatant red card for me so I would have been pretty aggrieved if they had gone up the other end and gone the other way.
“It is difficult for the officials. I think we are a very honest team in how we play the game. I don’t want our teams looking for silly or cheap fouls, I want us to be a team that puts it on the opposition and plays the game in the right way. Our players won’t fall to the ground. Unfortunately Thiago was stopped from getting to the ball.”
Andrews speaking to Sky Sports on what he discussed with the referees after the final whistle: “The challenge on [Igor] Thiago from [Cristian] Romero, to go and discuss it really.
“I consistently say about the officials having a really, really difficult job. I’m respectful of their role and I think it’s just healthy to communicate what they think it was at the time. They clearly felt it wasn’t at their time, VAR decided it wasn’t enough to overturn and obviously I disagree.”
Tottenham midfielder Joao Palhinha, speaking to Sky Sports: “I think it is a fair result.
“To be honest, not easy playing against a good team in an away game.
“Second clean sheet in a row in the Premier League – it is not easy – we need to have credit about that. Offensively we still need much more than we have been doing.”
