This is who is promoted and relegated from the Championship following what was a dramatic finale day of the regular 2019/20 season.
We knew prior to today that West Brom, Brentford and Fulham were in the race for automatic promotion whilst all three relegation places still to be decided, with up to eight clubs still not safe.
To go up automatically tonight the Baggies (2nd – 82 points) needed one of these three things to happen: A win, or a draw and Brentford failing and Fulham failing to win by 16 goals, or a defeat with a Brentford loss and Fulham failing to win.
Brentford (3rd – 81 points) needed: a win and West Brom fail to win, or they draw and West Brom lose and Fulham fail to win.
Fulham (4th – 80 points) knew they would be promoted if they win and West Brom lose and Brentford fail to win, or they win and West Brom draw and Brentford fail to win – but Fulham would need to win by 16 goals to overtake West Brom.
Nottingham Forest (5th – 70 points) would make the play-offs with: A win, or with a draw, or with a defeat if Swansea fail to win or if Swansea win and fail to make up a five-goal swing in goal difference between the two sides, or with a defeat if Swansea win and Cardiff lose.
Cardiff City (6th – 70 points) would get a playoff place if: they win, or they draw, or they lose and Swansea fail to win, or they lose, Swansea win and Forest lose by more than four goals.
Swansea City (7th – 67 points) would get a playoff place if: they win and Cardiff lose or they win and Forest lose with a five-goal swing in Swansea’s favour.
Wigan (13th – 58 points*) would be relegated unless they win and either Charlton or Luton fail to win.
Huddersfield (18th – 51 points) needed just a draw to stay safe.
Middlesbrough (19th – 50 points) knew they would be safe with: A win. But would be relegated if: They lose and Charlton and Luton both win and Birmingham avoid defeat (or Birmingham lose, but Boro lose by five more goals than Birmingham do) or if they draw and Birmingham and Charlton both win and Luton win by an implausible 15 or more goals. Again, these scenarios depend on if Wigan will not have 12 points deducted at the end of the season or win their appeal.
Birmingham City (20th – 50 points) will be safe with: A win, or a draw even if Charlton and Luton both win due to only one of them having a superior goal difference. Birmingham would be relegated if: they lose and Charlton and Luton both win and Middlesbrough do not lose by five more goals than Birmingham do or they draw and Charlton win and Luton win by 10 or more goals.
Charlton (21st – 48 points) would be safe with: A win. Or they would be down if they draw and Luton and Wigan both win or they draw and one of Luton and Wigan win and Barnsley improbably win by 10 or more goals or they lose and Luton avoid defeat and either Wigan or Barnsley win.
Luton (22nd – 48 points) knew they would be relegated if: they draw and Charlton avoid defeat and either Wigan or Barnsley win or they lose and any one of Wigan, Barnsley or Hull win. (This rules out the implausible scenario of Charlton losing by 18 more goals than Luton do).
Barnsley (23rd – 46 points) would be relegated unless: They win and Wigan and Luton both fail to win or they win and Charlton lose and one of Luton or Wigan fails to win, or improbably, they win by 10 or more goals and Charlton draw and one of Luton or Wigan fails to win.
Hull City (24th – 45 points) would be relegated unless: They win and Luton lose and Wigan and Barnsley both fail to win.
HOW DID IT PLAY OUT?
Slaven Bilic’s men secured promotion but it wasn’t as comfortable as they would have liked it to be, with QPR’s Ryan Manning opening the scoring, before Grady Diangana got West Brom’s equaliser before the break.
By half time, fellow promotion-chasers Brentford and Fulham were both trailing 1-0 against Barnsley and Wigan respectively.
It was just minutes into the second half that Callum Robinson tapped in from close-range to put the Baggies back in front, however Eberechi Eze got QPR back on levels terms with around 30 minutes of normal time remaining.

By this point, Brentford were still 1-0 down against Barnsley, however Fulham got a goal back against Wigan, who would go down, depending on the outcome of their appeal against their points deduction.
Josh Da Silva gave Brentford an equaliser in the 72nd minute, which dropped Barnsley back into the relegation zone with Luton winning 3-1 against Blackburn.

Sam Gallagher got a second for Blackburn to make it 3-2, but with Wigan drawing 1-1, Barnsley drawing and Hull losing it meant Wigan, Barnsley, Hull would be relegated.
With 10 minutes remaining, Nottingham Forest were getting a playoff place and Barnsley were going down, however for them, it all changed.
Cardiff were 3-0 up against Hull by the 83rd minute to surely claim a playoff place but send the Tigers down to League One.
A late goal in the 91st minute saw Barnsley beat Brentford 2-1, to send West Brom up, keep Barnsley up and send Wigan and Charlton (lost 4-0 to Leeds) down.
