In this article, we check out how the Premier League could be represented by an incredible NINE teams in Europe next season.

Nine of the 20 top flight could be playing European football in 2022/23 depending on how the rest of the current campaign plays out of course.

With the season coming to a climax, there is still a big question over which clubs will qualify for the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League.

Manchester City, Liverpool, West Ham and Leicester all have a chance of lifting a European in the coming weeks.

We usually see just seven clubs qualify for Europe, however, there could be as many as nine, but it would take a remarkable set of results, and it largely depends on West Ham and Leicester.

If West Ham win the Europa League, they will automatically qualify for next season’s Champions League no matter where they finish in the Premier League, joining the top-four sides.

Should Leicester win the Europa Conference League, they could join two other teams in next season’s Europa League.

Usually, we would only see the top-four go into the Champions League, while fifth place and the FA Cup winners qualify for the Europa League, and the team that wins the Carabao Cup going into the playoffs for the Europa Conference League.

However, because Liverpool won the Carabao Cup with either Jurgen Klopp’s side or Chelsea winning the FA Cup, that changes things in terms of European qualification.

The team who finish in sixth place will qualify for the Europa League and the club in seventh goes into the Europa Conference League.

However, for nine teams to qualify for Europe, both West Ham and Leicester need to win their respective trophies and not finish in the top seven.

What is needed for nine English sides to play in Europe next season

– West Ham to win the Europa League

– Leicester to win the Europa Conference League

– Both the Hammers and Foxes to finish outside of the top seven

We also could see no English team participate in the Europa Conference League next season, that would happen if Leicester won the competition and finish 7th – however that currently seems unlikely, as they are ten points behind West Ham who currently occupy that place.

The best chance of nine teams making Europe would be for West Ham and Leicester to win their respective European competitions, only for the Hammers to drop behind Wolves in the league – who are only three points behind with one match in hand.

Manchester United however are at risk of not playing in Europe for the first time since 1990, if they don’t finish inside the top seven.

Manchester City have one foot in the Champions League final after winning 4-3 against Real Madrid, though we saw how the La Liga side can turn on the style, especially with the panenka penalty and Vinicius Junior’s dummy, and with the second leg at the Bernabeu, it could throw a spanner in the works.

Liverpool played their first leg against Villarreal on Wednesday, the Reds winning 2-0 in the first leg, while West Ham and Leicester have their respective semi-finals against Eintracht Frankfurt and Roma kick-off on Thursday.

The last time we saw nine clubs in Europe from the Premier League was back in the 2008-09 season when Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool all qualified for the Champions League after finishing in the top-four the season prior.

Everton played in the UEFA Cup, before it was renamed the Europa League by finishing in fifth, and were joined by FA Cup winners Portsmouth, League Cup winners Tottenham and Manchester City who qualified through the UEFA Fair Play ranking.

Aston Villa finished in sixth, but had to qualify for the UEFA Cup through the Intertoto Cup, discontinued after the 2008 tournament.
