‘The worst in the club’s history’ – Torquay unveil new home kit for 2023/24

‘The worst in the club’s history’ – This is what was said as Torquay United unveil their new home kit for the 2023/24 season.

The recently relegated side will be playing in the National League South again, for the first time since the 2018/19 campaign.

But sales for their new home shirt isn’t expected to do well, with a poll launched by TorquayTalk via Twitter, and the majority are unimpressed with it.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Torquay United AFC is delighted to announce that South Devon College will be the front-of-shirt sponsor of United’s new 2023/24 home kits.

This latest exciting development sees the partnership between both parties continuing to go from strength to strength, with the decision for the College to become the first front-of-shirt sponsor of United’s kits since 2019 seeing two forward-thinking and progressive members of the Torbay landscape join forces to highlight its common commitment – Building a better Bay for all.

South Devon College’s passion for inspiring the local community is through learning in a modern and friendly environment, with a state-of-the-art main campus in Paignton, and other campuses based in various locations throughout Torbay and beyond, including Torquay, Newton Abbot and Kingswear.

With TUAFC possessing a similar ethos, and the Club firmly committed to attaining the best for the Torbay community and its residents, the 2023/24 campaign will see Gary Johnson’s side striving for National League South supremacy on the field, whilst this new link-up will see both Torquay United and South Devon College setting their sights on scaling new heights off the field.

After confirming the College as the Club’s front-of-shirt sponsor, TUAFC Director Mel Hayman highlighted how the common goals for both parties made the arrangement possible, with the presence of a main sponsor on United’s kits for the first time in four years signifying far more than merely a logo on a shirt.

“Torquay United AFC has enjoyed an excellent working relationship with South Devon College for a number of years now, and having the College as our main shirt sponsor next season is fantastic news.

“With the College’s ambitions for our local community being so in sync with the Club’s, this partnership will benefit not only TUAFC and the College, but also Torbay and its residents.”

Likewise, Laurence Frewin, Principal and CEO of South Devon College was keen to highlight the benefits of working together with South Devon’s only professional sporting outfit.

“South Devon College is incredibly proud to be sponsoring Torquay United AFC for the season ahead. We are so well aligned in our values, ambitions, aspirations for inclusivity and creating opportunities for people locally.

“This partnership offers a new way for TUAFC and South Devon College to collectively reach out to the community which are so proud to be part of. Together we feel we can make Torbay an even greater place to live, work and play.”

Torquay United AFC looks forward to the Yellow Army, as well as South Devon College’s staff and students, joining us on what promises to be an exciting and productive journey in the season ahead!

Further details regarding United’s new home kit, including pre-order information, will be announced shortly.

Torquay also unveiled an away kit, saying in their second statement: “Torquay United AFC is proud to announce that the Club’s new 2023/24 away kits will see Torbay Story featuring as our front-of-shirt sponsors.

This exciting new partnership will see the Torbay Story logo taking pride of place on United’s away strip next term, with our magnificent Bay thus getting unparalleled attention from all over the south of England, as Gary Johnson’s side go on their travels to take on their National League South rivals throughout the course of the 2023/24 campaign.

Torbay Story was created two years ago to promote the forward-thinking, positive and compelling story of the three wonderful towns within the Bay – Torquay, Paignton and Brixham.

During that time, residents, partners, and local businesses have been uniting together to not only highlight some of the gems that our glorious locality already possesses – but also promote the unique potential of the area, with the ultimate aim of attracting investment and funding to create a more prosperous Torbay.

The local community remains at the very heart of Torbay Story though, and residents are actively encouraged to play their own part in promoting our stunning Bay by discovering more here.

With Torquay United AFC proud to champion the cause of working together to build a better Bay, this new link-up sees two key players of the Torbay landscape sharing an identical ethos, as well as a firm commitment towards creating more opportunities within the Torbay area, and a brighter future for both the local community and its residents.

Jim Parker, the Chair of the Torbay Place Leadership Board, said:

“Torbay Story is a fresh new approach for the Bay and something we can all work together on by promoting and telling everyone about what we have to offer. Everyone, not just those from the prominent organisations and businesses, have an important role in this. Working together to build on the successes, the Partnership knows the need for us to look outwards and think bigger, as we seek to bring prosperity for all those who live and work here.

“The partnership and I have listened to what people think about our place, the good and the bad, and this shared story highlights Torbay’s distinctiveness and character. We now have a clear, forward-looking, and vitally shared story for Torbay and each of the towns, that will provide focus for the Bay’s development and promotion.

“It is brilliant to be able to literally team up with United and promote the Bay in a unique way. Fingers crossed this unusual way of promoting the resort will see the club doing just that – and winning promotion themselves this coming season.”

Meanwhile, TUAFC CEO George Edwards spoke of the key benefits of promoting the Torbay Story cause beyond the Bay itself.

“Torquay United AFC and Torbay Story are both extremely proud to represent our local community, and we share the same vision of creating an innovative, vibrant, and flourishing Torbay in the future.

“By promoting Torbay Story on our away shirts next season, we think this is the perfect way to spread the word outside of the Bay, and give the Story the wider recognition and interest it deserves.”

With Torquay United AFC delighted to be playing its part in the Torbay Story, both parties are looking forward to the forthcoming 2023/24 campaign being its most exciting chapter yet!

Further details regarding United’s new away kit, including pre-order information, will be announced shortly.

This is what fans are saying as Torquay unveil their new home kit for 2023/24…

@Torquayhopper12: It’s not too late to bin it off and start again. The white stripes and blue sleeves just do not go together

@gazhart90: Looks like something you create on pro evo soccer when creating your club 🙄

@jamiepikeonline: That’s sick. I mean that’s made me feel sick 🤮

@nick_french: Saves me £50, thank you TUFC

@samdruiff: Is this a wind up?

@AlexanderAyres: The worst shirt in the club’s history. Sack the designer.

@andygulls: That’s terrible. So bad.

@TorquayFans1: What on earth is that

@SamTQ4T: Right idea but poor execution imo

@toby_dart: Not gonna get any money in shirt sales are we

@QswannT: Shocker! I had so much hope!

@J_GRANT1109: Hopefully the squad is better than the kit. As that’s horrible 🤮

@callum1512_: Torquays kits are normally so clean … not sure on that

@jameschalk163: Send it back and try again, guys 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

@BlueDay440: It really baffles the mind that someone from Puma got paid to design that, then someone else paid by puma looked at it and said “Yep that’s what we were going for”

@tomd0312: What have you done

@cornwallmorris: They don’t help themselves, do they

@upthegulls94: Thank you for letting me save some money this year. 😅🤢

@PaulMEllis27: Absolutely awful. Maybe the worst Torquay kit ever. At least that saves me some money though

@joshcoles78: Horrendous! The white accent is out of place imo and personally I dislike shirts with a central badge but to have the Puma sponsor and the badge on top of each other centrally looks off. I know we’re in a part time league now but this looks Sunday league.

@Ecresswellcluer: What the fuck is that

@Torquayhopper12: Worst kit the club has ever put out I think. Two different shirt ideas horribly bodged together

@Kaiw_03: Ahaha that’s abysmal

@LivoAaron: Wtf is that 😂😂😂

@FyldeMax: haha that really is horrible

@AlexanderAyres: Burn them now before they go on general sale.

@JoeGilberto96: Without that white weird strip thing it would be a decent kit that completely ruins it

@gjm_07: That is Grim

@QswannT: What is with the white bits? And the purple SDC logo – NO thank you! Let’s hope the away kit is better – you ain’t selling many of these!

@HarveyA_17: This is absolutely disgusting.
