League Two league leaders at Christmas and their final positions

We have taken a look at the League Two league leaders at Christmas from the past 12 years and listed their final positions.

The 2020/21 season started later than it usually would do due to the coronavirus pandemic halting the previous campaign, hence why we’re only just approaching the halfway point for the current.

We can all hope that it can get back to how it should be for the 2021/22 season, however there will be a change it dates and schedules for the 2022/23 season with the Qatar World Cup taking place in two years time.

Many teams have had the honour of being top of the table for the festive period, though we’ve seen several other teams failing to keep their number 1 spot before slipping down the league.

Right, time to check out the League Two league leaders at Christmas from the past 12 years and their final positions…

2008 – WYCOMBE WANDERERS

In the 2008/09 season, Wycombe Wanderers managed to get as high as the top of the League Two table at Christmas.

Despite falling away from their position, they still ended up finishing in 3rd place and won promotion up to League One.

Fast forward to today, they sit 24th in the Championship table with 12 points from 20 games played under Gareth Ainsworth.

2009 – ROCHDALE

In the 2009/10 season, Rochdale were doing brilliantly, claiming top spot when it came to the League Two table at Christmas.

They may have been disappointed not to finish top and instead 3rd however they did get promoted to League One.

They ended up finishing in 1st and like in the 2010/11 season, were crowned champions for a record fourth time, and to seal their return to the third tier after a two-year absence.

The club are currently in their third season at non league level, finishing 20th and 15th in the past two seasons. Mad to think they were an inch of promotion to the Championship in 2015.

2014 – WYCOMBE WANDERERS

In the 2014/15 season, Wycombe Wanderers were top of League Two at Christmas, once again with Gareth Ainsworth at the helm.

The Chairboys beat Oxford United in the League One playoff final at Wembley Stadium for the 2019/20 season, now they are giving it their best shot in the second tier of English football. Can they avoid the drop?

In the 2015/16 season, Derek Adams’s Plymouth Argyle were flying high at the top of League Two at Christmas.

However they then dropped down a few positions, finishing in 5th and lost in the playoff final to AFC Wimbledon. Ouch.

It was the Imps’ second season back in League Two after missing out on the League Two playoff final in the 2017/2018 season

They ended up finishing in 1st and promoted to League One with a total of 85 points.

2019 – SWINDON TOWN

Fast forward to today, they sit 22nd in the League One table with 17 points from 19 games played with John Sheridan in charge somehow.

The current League Two leaders for the 2020/21 season is Newport County, who are one points clear of second place Forest Green Rovers, two ahead of Carlisle United in 3rd and four ahead of Cheltenham who sit 4th.
