Swindon to appoint ex-Chelsea, Leeds, Rotherham, Millwall, Bristol City player as manager

Swindon Town are getting set to appoint ex-Chelsea, Leeds, Rotherham, Millwall, Bristol City player Jody Morris as their new manager.

The Robins are set to announce the 44 year old today (Saturday 28th January) following the departure of Scott Lindsey to Crawley Town, according to TheRealEFL.

The search went on for a number of weeks, with Technical Director Sandro di Michele leading the search. He is believed to have been instrumental in Morris’ decision to move into League Two.

Chelsea Youth confirmed via their Twitter account on Saturday morning: “Andy Ross and Jimmy Smith take charge of #CFCU18 today with Ed Brand believed to be on his way to Swindon Town as Jody Morris’ Assistant Manager.”

Morris was the standout candidate, a top target for the club, but some thought it wouldn’t be possible, with uncertainty that he’d drop to manage at League Two level.

But after holding many interviews with others alongside Morris, they have finally got their man, and now the excitement can begin, with Swindon fans hoping to welcome him for the weekend’s league fixture against Gillingham.

MORE ABOUT JODY MORRIS

Jody Morris is an English professional football coach and a former midfielder for the likes of Chelsea, Leeds United, Rotherham United, Millwall, St Johnstone and Bristol City. He won several trophies at Chelsea, including the UEFA Super Cup in 1998 and FA Cup in 2000.

After retiring from playing, Morris then went into coaching, taking the helms of Chelsea’s academy.

Initially to help coach the Under-21 squad, but was named assistant coach of the Under-18 team, and moved to head coach of the team for the 2016–17 campaign.

His side won the FA Youth Cup for the fifth successive time in 2018. At Chelsea, Morris coached possession-based attacking football, and used several formations including the 3–4–3, 3–5–2, 4–3–3 and 4–4–2.

In his two terms as head coach, Chelsea’s Under-18s won 59 matches and lost 5 times. They won the treble in 2016–17 and the quadruple in 2017–18.

In May 2018, Morris was named assistant to former Chelsea teammate Frank Lampard at Derby County, wit the first game in charge being a 2–1 win over Reading, thanks to a last-minute winner from Tom Lawrence.

On the 25th of September, Derby knocked Premier League giants Manchester United out of the Carabao Cup at Old Trafford on penalties, following a 2–2 draw.

At the end of the season, Derby qualified for the Championship play-offs after coming sixth in the league. In the semi-finals, they overturned a 1–0 loss at home to Leeds in the first leg with a 4–2 win at Elland Road in the second that gave them a 4–3 aggregate win. They lost in the final against Aston Villa, 2-1.

Morris returned to Chelsea in July 2019 as part of the first-team coaching staff following the appointment of Lampard as head coach.

They finished 4th in the Premier League and qualified for the UEFA Champions League.
